- The renown Hindu scientist, Dr. Chindi Ashutor, who has conquered plague in India, visits Scotland and falls in love with Kate Erskine, whose sister Mary is engaged to Ashutor's college friend, James Bassett. Although Kate loves Ashutor, she says marriage would make them social outcasts. Several months later, Bassett comes to Ashutor in India for help in eluding members of the Black Hand. Bassett became involved with them out of curiosity, and now they demand that he commit a murder. On a boat bound for Italy, Ashutor gives Bassett an injection to make him appear dead. In view of the Black Hand agents, François and Countess Petite Florence, a dummy is then buried at sea. In Scotland, after the agents overhear Ashutor tell the Erskines that Bassett is all right, Ashutor bribes François, who is then murdered by the countess. For his silence, Ashutor demands that Bassett be left alone. He then bids another farewell to Kate saying he will always love her.
- Landry Smith, lives with Minnie, his ward, in Corrèze, in France. Kate Lockwood, his servant, asks Bill Stanley, a sadistic Mexican cowboy, to come kill her master and fins his money. Bill arrives in the area in the same time of Jean Didier, a man whose father suicided because of Landry Smith.
- Sir Hargrave Wendever learns that his days on this earth are numbered. When she hears that the Lord has canceled his order for a portrait, Betty Oliver, the fiancée of the artist, Robert Hewitt, who is sick, goes to him and begs for a loan. Touched by the situation, the Lord decides to use his fortune to brighten the days of the two unlucky souls and takes them to Monte Carlo. But Wendever's enemies try to make Robert jealous.

As Madge, a young gypsy woman, two men fight for her, after which the winner, John, forces her to marry him. Then Madge deserts John and begins a romance in England with Harold, the youngest son of the Duke of Maldon. Soon, however, Harold fights with his older brother, who has criticized the affair with a married woman, and, believing that he has killed his brother, Harold leaves Madge behind and smuggles himself out of the country. Years later, Harold, who has found out that his brother did not die, meets Madge once again, and, determined not to let him leave her a second time, Madge kills John so that she and Harold can marry. Successfully covering up past scandals, Madge and Harold begin a life so sedate and distinguished that they quickly become England's model couple.
- Max Imbert, the young director of a mining company, notices the charming Odette Murias, nicknamed "the warbler of the black country". She is the daughter of the beloved foreman. Max fires Odette's fiancé Claude so she can become his mistress. When the girl won't give in, Maw fires her and her father too. In protest, all the miners start a strike. Murias warns them against it and saves his boss from the crowd. Grateful, Max eventually promises a future of peace and harmony.
