- Following his graduation from engineering school, 24-year-old slacker Lenny Markowitz moves into his own rundown apartment (his first time away from home), and next door to a gorgeous older redhead (Melody).
- Lenny thinks it's important to impress Jackie so he asks Raymond to set up a fake fight for him to win. Things don't go according to plan and it takes some fast explaining on Lenny's part to clear up the mess.
- Lenny dates a new girl (Helene, played by Annie Potts) who is convinced that men, including Lenny, will treat her like dirt.
- Vinnie feels betrayed when learning his buddy Lenny is now dating Jackie, Vinnie's former girlfriend. Lenny apologizes for hurting his pal but only fighting a duel will restore his honor, Vinnie believes.
- Grandpa has been living with the Blackfeet Indians for twenty years so the family is shocked when he suddenly shows up. But Grandpa has another surprise that his kinfolk are unprepared for.
- Helene shows up unexpectedly at the shoe store. She tells Lenny she has become more assertive and she wants to start dating him again.
- Melody offers her couch to Lenny while his ceiling is being repaired, and Lenny soon finds his feelings for her going beyond friendship.
- Lenny meets a young woman he likes and intends to pursue a relationship with her. Her father disapproves of Lenny however and forbids his daughter from seeing Lenny.
- Honoring a pledge of always helping friends Lenny tells them of an apartment vacancy in his building. Lenny's dismayed when the situation becomes unwanted roommates who don't want to leave.
- Lenny has a run in with a delivery man at the shoe store and the guy threatens to beat Lenny up. He gets all sorts of advice on how to deal with the bully from friends and family, none of it particularly helpful.
