- Tikhon Khrennikov, the one and only head of the Composer Union of the USSR, was forced to accept this position by the orders of Stalin in 1948. He continued until 1991 when the USSR collapsed. Khrennikov protected Soviet musicians from prison and death, but made sure that music was written in accordance with Communist ideology.
