- Princess Ariana is used to getting her own way, and her selfish habit of putting her own needs before those of her friends and family has isolated everyone around her. At just 20 years old, she's already traveled the globe on her mother's dime and squandered every cent that her parents had put aside for her siblings' education. But, in true Princess style, Ariana commits the same indiscretions time and time again, using her parents' money to fund a lavish lifestyle she could never maintain on her own. After her latest transgression, an "accidental" online purchase of more than $1,000, Ariana's parents are ready to cut the cord. The first order of business for host Gail Vaz-Oxlade will be to adjust the attitude of this serial spender. But Ariana will have to work hard to convince Gail that she really wants to change... because she doesn't seem convinced herself. Will Gail's tough-love approach be enough to bring this haughty Princess back from the dark side?
- Princess Kim is so obsessed with her image that she has no qualms spending thousands of dollars - other people's dollars - to keep her skin tanned, lips plump, and hair coiffed each month. At 26, Kim has already undergone several invasive plastic surgeries, and hopes to go under the knife again in the near future. A full time student, Kim has changed her career path ten times, squandering every last cent in the process. With no direction, a fragmented education and a barely $14,000 yearly income, Kim depends completely on her adoring boyfriend and fed up mother to fund her luxurious lifestyle. Princess Kim needs desperately to learn to stand on her own two feet before she loses the people she cares about most for good. Host Gail Vaz-Oxlade strips away the fancy feathers in an effort to help this shallow Princess stop obsessing about her looks, and start to take control of her future.
- 20 year old Princess Sarah is a university student who takes from everyone around her. Sarah's parents finance her excessive lifestyle, shelling out almost $35,000 a year to keep their Princess primped and preened to her liking. She's got big dreams of becoming a fashion journalist after graduation, but so far all she's done is a lot of expensive research. Sarah has crammed her closets full of expensive brand name items, all on her parents' dime. And while Sarah's parents are her benefactors, her roommates are her maids: since she refuses to pitch in around the house, Sarah's roommates consistently find themselves cleaning up her messes, and have begun seriously considering kicking Sarah out as a result. Despite their generosity, Sarah has no problem giving her family and friends the cold shoulder when she doesn't get what she wants from them. With her roommates ready to give her the boot, it's time for Sarah to start pulling her own weight around the house and learn to live with less. Can host Gail Vaz-Oxlade teach this spoiled Princess to stand on her own two feet?
- Twenty-one year old Heather lives with her parents, Les and Susan, and one of her two older sisters, Amber. Heather does nothing to help around the house, often leaving a mess in her wake. Her other older sister, Seana, recently got married, and Amber is doing the same soon. Heather is in both wedding parties, and has made her participation in both all about her, and not about her sisters. She is a college student and works part time in retail, all her money and more which goes to her own wants. She has switched majors several times with no clear goal of what she wants to accomplish with her life, not understanding that it costs money to go to school, more the longer she prolongs the process. As such, she has racked up student loans in the amount of $25,000 so far. Heather would be deeper in debt if it wasn't for Les and Susan paying for most of her day to day needs. In summary, Heather plays the baby of the family who needs to be taken care of to the hilt. Gail has to get Heather to take responsibility for her life choices including repairing her family relationships, get her to set career goals so that she can focus on completing her education, and get her to spend time doing things which don't cost a lot of money.
- Princess Lasia just had her 30th birthday, and so far, her life hasn't turned out the way she wanted. She's making less money than ever, and finds herself begging her parents to pay her bills. Enter financial expert Gail Vaz-Oxlade who challenges Lasia to re-think her approach to finances and fun.
- Princess Lauren knows exactly what she wants, and she knows exactly who's going to pay for it: her future husband! This pampered princess will only accept the finer things in life, but doesn't see why she should have to spend any of her own hard-earned money on the boring necessities when she could be using that money on designer shoes and bags. Her family is fed up and her boyfriend doesn't know if he'll ever be able to meet Lauren's ridiculous standards. Host Gail Vaz-Oxlade challenges Lauren to reconsider her approach, but with a lifetime of indulgence to overcome in four short weeks, it may be a struggle for them both.
- Twenty-five year old Nina makes a good $52,000 annual income as a law clerk, with dreams of becoming a criminal lawyer. Beyond being accepted into Harvard Law School, she has made no financial plans to pay for that schooling nor will she accept any offers other than from other Ivy League schools. She squanders all her money on herself in the moment. She has so much stuff, she uses a spare bedroom to store it all in. Because she doesn't like to drive or, God forbid, take public transit, she has retained the service of a personal driver. She has made no effort to pay off her previous $25,000 in student loans, which has since gone to collections, or her credit card debt, which has resulted in her having an extremely poor credit score. These debts currently total $29,000. She still lives at home, never having lived anywhere else. Although she makes more money than either of her parents, she contributes nothing to the household financially or otherwise, her father Dave who feels he can't even take a day off from his six day per week job in order to pay Nina's bills. She believes it is their responsibility as her parents to take care of her, including financially. Gail wants Nina to stand on her own two feet, which means moving out of the house and living on her own. In doing so, Nina will have to do things for herself with her own money, which will eventually include paying rent. Gail also wants Nina to review her career goals, including needing to go to Harvard as compared to a regional school, Nina who has so far taken the view that it's Harvard or nothing.
- Twenty year old Ashley worked as a dispatcher for a towing company, having just lost that job. She likes the feeling when she spends money on herself, feeling incomplete if she leaves a mall without buying something. Ashley's mom, Brenda, spoils Ashley now since she couldn't when she raised Ashley as a single mom. Brenda cannot resist Ashley's pout, which works on her each and every time. Brenda estimates she has spent $10,000 on Ashley in the past year alone. Brenda still is not financially well off nor is Brenda's mom who still works and lives with them, but Brenda still spends on Ashley's wants and needs. Ashley still lives in their rented apartment rent-free. In addition, Ashley owns a car, while Brenda doesn't. What Brenda won't buy for Ashley, Ashley's boyfriend Jordan will, he estimating he spending $7,000 on Ashley in the past year, going into debt himself in the process. Ashley has dreams of living in a mansion and working in her own salon, which are attainable as Ashley does work hard, but she needs to get her spending under control. Ashley is currently $17,000 in debt. Gail makes Ashley contribute in sweat equity to the home she has taken for granted, gives Ashley a sense if hairdressing truly is the career she wants, and makes her work toward what she ultimately chooses as that career goal.
- Twenty-five year old Rachel has a sense of entitlement, believing that parents' responsibilities include supporting their children financially, a child which she still sees herself largely as being. Still living at home rent free, she is given almost everything by her parents, Brian and Debbie. While Brian states that he wants Rachel to be more independent, Debbie does see her role as being a safety net for her daughter. Beyond room and board which also includes Debbie doing all the household chores such as cooking and cleaning, Brian and Debbie have given Rachel a cute but expensive car. Because she has somewhat of an antagonistic relationship with her parents, Rachel states that she would like to move out on her own, the perfect solution in her mind being that her parents downsize from their own current home so that they can buy her a condo. As such, Rachel only works part time - working full time which she feels would be too stressful - while spending all and more of her money on herself. Beyond what Brian and Debbie have outright given her, Rachel is still $24,000 in debt. Gail believes Rachel uses shopping to make herself happy, happy or independent which she neither is. Gail gives Rachel a sense of what it means to be independent on her income, and gives her a reality check on what she can afford in terms of an apartment whenever she were to move out, or conversely what she would have to do to get closer to her dream apartment. Gail also wants to get Rachel to see that her spending is wasteful, not only as an obstacle to achieving bigger goals, but in comparison to what others with her income (i.e. without mommy and daddy) would have to face. Rachel may be a tough nut to crack, but the bigger and more difficult nut may end up being Debbie.
- Twenty-six year old Nicole likens her spending to drugs: they're both addictions. She makes good money with a $55,000 annual income, but it is insufficient to support her shopping addiction. She basically gets what she wants, whether it be from her mother Lenni, her girlfriend Leticia with who she spends together in the flush of early love, and her best friend Ivory. Nicole has access to one of Lenni's credit cards, which Nicole has maxed out time and time again. All three enablers know that they are such, and that money does and will cause problems in their respective relationships with Nicole. Nicole herself does realize this all as well. Gail gives her challenges to curb her impulses to feel the need to shop on meaningless stuff, and make her reprioritize people over stuff.
- Thirty-two year old Corrinne earns $32,000 as a customer care call center supervisor. She likes buying everything new, it being designer the better. What troubles her family and friends even more is that her three year old daughter already knows designer names. She is also a party girl, going out clubbing and dining, more often than not indulging on her favorite food, expensive shrimp dishes. Whenever Corrinne runs out of money, she is not averse to sponging off others, mostly her partner Rohan, who admits it is a thorn in their relationship. A joint cost is their condo fees, which Corrinne refuses to pay as she does not understand its value in her life. As such, the condo corporation has placed a lien on their property and could foreclose, which in turn is negatively affecting Rohan's financial situation. Corrinne has done similar things to her mother, Hortense. In addition to Hortense paying for the daycare for Corrinne's daughter, Corrinne maxed out one of Hortense's credit cards, which has led to Hortense without money or a car, while Corrinne still has a fancy car of her own. Gail helps Corrinne with a lifestyle adjustment, in learning how to shop for and cook food, even her beloved shrimp, which she can prepare at home for a fraction of the price of a restaurant meal. Corrinne has to learn exactly what those condo fees are for and if she still decides not to pay what that means legally. And Corrinne has to mend relationships with both Rohan and Hortense, the former who could be out of her life if things don't change.
- Twenty-six year old Jennifer is a customer service rep at a financial institution, ironic as she advises people on how to save money when she can't manage her own finances. Jennifer can't resist buying anything that's "pretty" or "girly" for herself. She has also long worked at a lingerie store, she keeping that job only part-time if only to maintain her employee discount, especially important as she loves lingerie. She still lives with her parents rent-free, they who have placed their lives on hold for her. Although her spending drives him crazy, her father, Tullio, can't say no to his little princess. He wants to retire but can't without making those sacrifices to Jennifer. She takes his efforts for granted as although he often makes her lunch for work, it often sits uneaten or thrown in the garbage as she is addicted to fast food. She was diagnosed as being diabetic ten years ago, her pampering herself a distraction from those health issues. Her mother, Anna, indulges Jennifer in large part because of the diabetes. Even with her parents taking care of most of her needs and wants, Jennifer is still over $10,000 in debt. Gail shows her what life away from mommy and daddy is for the first time in her life, and that her fast food addiction is wreaking havoc with her health. Jennifer has to find cheaper alternatives to shopping as her entertainment. And she has to refocus what diabetes means in her life.
- Twenty-five year old Ashley, a social worker, has the attitude that money is for the here and now, and thus she spends it on what she wants in the present. She buys anything that will make her stand out as special. She's a party girl, the exact opposite of her husband of one year, Scott, who still has to pay many of Ashley's bills. He has to work at a part time job above and beyond his full time job to pay Ashley's bills. Even with Scott's assistance, Ashley has racked up close to $40,000 in consumer debt, including a $18,000 student loan she has made no attempt at paying back. Ashley's biggest critic is Scott's sister, Heather, who cannot see their marriage lasting unless Ashley's spending habits and thus her attitude toward Scott change. Because of her spending, Ashley no longer has access to credit. Gail has to make Ashley start paying her equal share of the household finances, spend more wisely when she has to spend on things for herself, and truly understand the negative consequences that her spending has placed on both her present and future. These tasks may be difficult for Ashley as she also has to consider Scott, whose goals with his money for their life together may be totally different than hers.
- Twenty-three year old Catyanna is a full time student in her last year of a marketing program at college. For school, her parents, Andreas and Alana, gave her $15,000, the rest to be paid on a line of credit. Cat feels she deserves to indulge herself, from spending on beauty and fashion items, to partying. When she runs out of money, her parents cover the rest. She lives at home rent-free and doesn't lift a finger around the house, she believing she doesn't need to since it is not her house. Her parents do worry about her partying in particular, as she was responsible for causing a car accident once, her car, which was paid for by her parents, being totaled and her driver's license being revoked. She spends money she doesn't have as she doesn't want money to be a barrier to experiencing things in life. She is currently $26,000 in debt, which includes the $15,000 from her parents for school, which she learns was not a gift but a loan. Gail has to get Cat to see the consequences of her bad behavior, which includes giving back for the bad outcome of one reckless decision, and to get her to see her future in a more realistic light.
- One of the older of ten siblings, thirty year old Kirsten feels like it is her time to pamper herself seeing to all the years that she spent being older sister in taking care of her siblings when they were growing up. Formerly an executive assistant, she has just lost her job in downsizing. While waiting for her severance check the equivalent of six months salary, Kirsten continues to spend while going back to school at teacher's college, with her heart not seemingly fully embracing the fact of going into the teaching profession. Kirsten does not realize the burden she is now placing on others. Julianne, one of her sisters with who she is living, is always worried that Kirsten will not come up with her portion of rent on time, placing Julianne at risk. Kirsten relies financially on her boyfriend Sean, who does not want to have to take care of Kirsten above what he sees as two bigger priorities in his life: his two children. Not including what Sean has spent on her, Kirsten is $49,000 in debt, most racked up in the span of one year. Gail wants Kirsten to learn how to cook, as she eats out three times a day because she doesn't have this skill. Gail has her evaluate her career goals in part by going through career counseling. And Gail wants Kirsten to try and return to the nurturing nature she displayed when she was growing up. An incident early in the process may be the defining point in Kirsten's journey.
- Twenty-seven year old Michelle is a student with lofty goals. She wants to attend law school, is writing a book, is designing her own house which she wants someone to build for her, wants a second home in Los Angeles, wants a $80,000 Cadillac Escalade, and wants a dog, but is doing nothing substantial to achieve any of it. She doesn't believe she has a shopping addiction, but admits she does like to shop. She doesn't even have to pay for her most basic needs as those are supplied by her parents, Rodha and Raj. They bought her a $35,000 luxury car which they maintain for her, paid for her education, provide her food and a roof over her head. They have even paid off some of her credit card debt when they felt it was too high. As such, Michelle is attached to her parents. Michelle doesn't feel she sponges off people, but rather they willingly give her money because of her charms. She does earn $15,000 in what is basically slightly above a minimum wage part time job. Beyond what her parents have given her, Michelle is still $40,000 in debt. Gail wants Michelle to experience life as an independent woman earning a full time income appropriate to her skills, and for her parents to set some expectations for Michelle if they are still going to support her financially.
- Twenty-three year old Sarah believes image is everything. That's why she is not averse to spending well above her $34,000 annual income means on items and services for herself. When she runs out of money, she turns to family and friends using emotional blackmail to get what she wants. Her boyfriend Brad does not like Sarah's entitled attitude, she believing he should buy her whatever she wants. She lives at home rent-free, pays no household expenses, and expects her parents to pick up the tab on her car purchase (the car loan which her parents had to cosign since she would have not been otherwise approved). She believes rent is a waste of money. With all these issues, Sarah is $25,000 in debt, which includes extremely high interest pay advance loans. Gail wants to give Sarah a taste of what it would be like if she had no one to rely on for the most basic of her needs. In doing so, Gail is hoping Sarah will plan for her career and make positive steps in making more money to pay for her debt and for her future. Gail also hopes that Sarah will start giving back, specifically to her younger sister Sam, who is coming up to a special event of her own.
- Twenty-five year old Diana believes image is everything. She only works one day a week, as an esthetician, earning only $9,000 a year. As such, she relies on others to fund her lavish lifestyle, her boyfriend Tino taking the brunt of it. He pays for all their dates, as well as puts gas in her car and buys all her cigarettes. She wants Tino to buy a house, she not putting anything into that purchase at all. She also is training Tino into believing that he should buy her an engagement ring worth one year of his salary. In addition, she got her parents to buy her a car which she has yet to pay them back for, to pay for her esthetician training, and to build her a home spa office which she has not done anything with yet in terms of having clients there. She wants the world to believe she has it all. She is $42,000 in debt, including what she owes her parents. Gail wants to snap Sarah into a sense of reality both about what she can afford on her income, and what it will take if she were to spend on the big purchases that she wants, such as the ring and the house. Gail in part gives Diana a symbolic challenge to get the point of unrealistic expectations across to her. And since Diana believes image is everything, Gail gets her to guess what a series of people do and have in terms of monetary wealth based solely on their appearance.
- Gail shows that being a princess has no gender barrier. Meet twenty-one year old Spencer. All of his $23,000 annual income working full time for a moving company goes to Spencer, whose shopping weaknesses include designer clothes, jewelry, eating out and partying. But his biggest indulgence may be his car. Although not an expensive car at $12,000 new which he bought on credit, he has put in all the bells and whistles, treating it much like it is his castle. His spending has caused a rift between him and three women who are closest to him in life. His girlfriend Morgan, who often has to pay for their excursions, feels that his spending gets in the way of spending quality time together. His grandmother, "nana" Sandy, has given Spencer money in the past for what she thought were his needs, but she is upset to learn they were for self-indulgences. And his relationship with his mother, Paula, with who he used to have a close bond, has all but disintegrated as Paula has her own financial stresses beyond Spencer. He has called her names in the heat of the moment that should not be repeated. Spencer currently lives with Paula, but that situation is only temporary as the house is on the market, which means that Spencer's rent-free days will come to an end whenever the house sells, which could be at any moment. His consumer debt currently sits at $23,000. Largely as a symbolic move, Gail wants Spencer to see that he probably truly does not want his car to be his castle. Associated, Spencer sees what housing options are available to him with his current income. She gets him to explore career options to make more money beyond minimum wage. And she wants him meaningfully to see the value in the people and relationships that have supported him. Gail's first status check with Spencer may be the defining moment in his process. She will also see if a testosterone laden princess is any different to deal with than an estrogen laden one.
- Twenty-five year old Ashley, who has a $30,000 per year income, is all about consumption: clothes and accessories, eating out, and partying. Even though yoga is one of her passions, she is not zen about it, as she has a mountain of yoga clothes which for her is easier than having to do laundry. Her boyfriend Mike often will buy Ashley gifts, and when they are out shopping together and he doesn't offer to pay, she will drop not so subtle hints for him to do so. Sam and Kelly, her parents, paid for her college education, bought her a car which they upkeep for her, and cosigned her student loan. She is living at home rent free so that she can pay off her debt, but instead she has racked up even more debt. They now need to cut her off as Sam lost his job and they cannot afford to keep Ashley in all the comforts to which she is accustomed. Ashley's debt is not only risking her parents' lives, but the educations of her two younger sisters. Gail has to get Ashley to be a meaningful contributor to the household, which includes how to pay for her sisters' educations. Ashley has to find out what it will take to turn her dream of owning her own yoga studio into a reality. Involving Mike as a recipient, Ashley has to find alternatives to clubbing to have good times with friends on a budget.
- Twenty-five year old Andrea works no more than five hours a week in events planning, never having worked in a full time job for more than seven days consecutively in her life. Of Salvadoran ancestry, she believes, as is her culture, that parents are responsible for their children until the children get married. As such, she has no issue living off Nora, her mother, spending on clothes (jeans being her passion), partying, beauty treatments and other self-indulgences. After graduating from university two years ago, she got a paid vacation to Europe, and money which was supposed to last the entire trip. She ran out of money three weeks in, Nora advancing her emergency funds which she has no intention of paying back. She has been living on her own for four months, Nora having paid half the rent and half the food so far. And when Nora doesn't pay for food, Andrea just takes it from Nora's house. Andrea realizes full well what she is doing, namely manipulating people selfishly to get her way, seemingly without guilt. She is close to $50,000 in debt. She also has plans to go back to school in her want to become a Montessori teacher, a plan which is unattainable until her debt is paid off. Not an official challenge but a reality, Andrea has to get a real job. Gail makes Andrea face the reality of life on her limited income, and see if she is willing to do whatever it takes to get a job.
- Thirty year old Treva's shopping weaknesses are jewelry, handbags and shoes, she estimating that she has $15,000 worth of these three items alone. She also estimates that she could currently wear a different pair of shoes each and every day for three or four months. While she was in school, she used her now unpaid $15,000 worth of student loans to travel the world. As she no longer has incoming student loans to finance her extravagant spending, she goes to payday loan companies. Her roommate Véronique is always concerned that they will not be able to pay full rent because of Treva. Treva is constantly sponging off Theresa and Natalia, her mother and sister, without even batting an eye, playing the "baby of the family" card to the hilt. Treva underestimates the income from her full-time job, which in reality is only $15,000 annually. As such, Treva is $22,000 in debt. Gail provides Treva with a $1,400 advance to pay off the payday loans, which most do not realize have an interest rate of over 500%, that money which Treva will have to pay back at the end of this process with Gail. Gail wants Treva to: educate others on the predatory nature of payday loan companies; research what she believes is her path to wealth, namely buying, renovating and flipping houses; and pay back Natalia for all her past goodwill in a meaningful way that won't break her own bank. Can Treva at least save the $1,400 to pay back Gail, let alone demonstrate that she's changed?
- Twenty-seven year old Allison is an aspiring actress who acts likes a celebrity. Beyond the plethora of designer labels among her wardrobe, she considers the most expensive of beauty products necessities in the entertainment business. She can't hold a steady nine-to-five job as she would rather ditch work than miss an audition. Her boyfriend Jared provides her with gifts and pays for her every time they go out together. The only fall-back from acting that she has given herself is a stint at school, but that was always sidelined by trips she made so that she could be discovered. Others have facilitated her lifestyle because Allison is beautiful on the surface, and turns on the waterworks when her beauty doesn't get her what she wants. But approaching thirty with $130,000 of debt and no career to speak of, she is taking a scattered approach to possible alternatives to acting. And her beauty and youth will only last so long. Allison has to get realistic about getting a job to put a roof over her head while still having the flexibility to pursue her acting dream if she so chooses. Gail provides her with some experts in the fields that Allison has considered as possible careers so that she can fully explore what is required to succeed in those jobs, as well as some jobs that Allison may not have considered but would fulfill a role in bringing in some income. At the beginning of the process, Gail believes Allison may be her biggest challenge to date. A comment Allison makes at the first face-to-face meeting in response to the reason she is unable to file for bankruptcy sets the tone for the month.
- Twenty-three year old Daniela believes she's paid her dues in life to a point where she deserves to be in a position to direct, rather than be directed. As such, she sets her own rules, which includes living at home with her parents, Daniel and Roxana, rent-free since that money can be better spent on herself, and since she expects people to cater to her every need. She is obsessed with her appearance, especially her hair. She manipulates her boyfriend Jesse, which she plans to continue to do after they're married. Jesse is worried as he does not want to inherit her debt, while at the same time is concerned about what she is doing to herself in applying for more and more credit to feed her spending. She aspires to be another "Roxana", her mother who owns her own salon. When Roxana gave Daniela the opportunity to work in the salon, Daniela did nothing truly to earn a paycheck and was fired. Gail has to get Daniela to experience total independence and not be able to rely on anyone, unpaid or otherwise. As Daniela expects to marry Jesse, she has to sit down with him to see if his expectations are the same as hers for the wedding. And Gail wants Daniela to go back to work for her mother to see if her attitude and business aptitude has changed since the last work experience with Roxana.
