- A young woman awakens to find herself inside the four walls of a garage. Walls that appear innocuous like much of the places in a large metropolis, but which now separate her from everyone and everything. In this small space, an automobile emits carbon dioxide; a gas which one inhales without noticing every day when on the street. A gas that seems harmless, but inside this place, becomes deadly as it saturates the environment. The woman is no different from many others, affections, work, projects for the future, except for the fact that she is suddenly deprived of her freedom. Something which, up to now, has been unthinkable for her. Exactly at the moment she has decided to make a change in her life. The person who has closed her inside the garage is an unknown stranger who knows everything about her, and her past. Above all, the thing which is the most important to her in the world: a young daughter who is waiting for her at home. The reason for her imprisonment is not revealed. Only the amount of time available to her in order to save herself.

He will first take on minor jobs trying to survive but something happens when he chances on the so called 'scattini', the photographers of tourists at the Trevi fountain: he is fascinated. The chance encounter will spark a new life. Rome is a crossroads of international actors, bug films and extraordinary events such as the Olympiads (the first broadcast worldwide). Rome appears as the center of the world and of jet-set. It is then that Barillari finds his path and quickly becomes one of the greatest "paparazzi", as well as becoming the first paparazzo to be chased by fellow colleagues. This photo will circle the world. Fellini, renowned director of "La Dolce Vita" will nickname him "The King of Paparazzi". Barillari does not just take pictures of the stars but soon begins to narrate social changes describing them over more than 60 years of photography work. - Mihai is a homeless Romanian beggar in the center of Milan who also happens to be an aficionado of historical novels. We discover the details of his particular personality through a confrontation of points of view, sometimes in contrast and sometimes in harmony, with the persons he meets together with Ela, his Albanian girlfriend. Ela's unexpected pregnancy and her abortion, compelled by an impossible situation, lead to a sorrowful moment in the couple's life: Mihai loses that son he had imagined raising, and calling him "papa". Fortunately, the discovery of a Romanian association dedicated to helping the orphans of the Institute where Mihai had spent his infancy, leads him to regain his enthusiasm in organizing a return trip to his fatherland, now with the declared objective of coming to terms with his past and finding a job and a house together with Ela. Several months later, however, Ela is suddenly repatriated to Albania, and Mihai no longer receives any news about her. To fill the emotional void, he makes friends with a dog to which he gives the same name as his girlfriend, Ela: a border collie that attracts the attention or an Ukrainian lady, who, out of love for dogs and to save the life of that street animal, offers Mihai a home and a job. His life radically changes: he sleeps in a fine country house and works in a restaurant - until, in a single moment, he manages to send it all crashing down.

The man, who is the director the mise-en-scène and actor, retraces its genesis, all the way back to the evening before, the dress rehearsal. All of a sudden, he is brought back to the present by a voice: "Showtime!" The curtain goes up.
