- Christian is a dreamer who cannot find his place in this world; for the past 10 years he's been living in London, a city of a million opportunities, and training to become a professional in martial arts. At 35 years old, nothing he aspired to has become a reality. When he finds himself unemployed, his girlfriend (tired of his endless excuses) kicks him to the curb. Now he will be forced back to his birthplace, Genoa, where he will have to rediscover himself, reinvent himself, and above all else adapt himself to a new reality of friends and family, a reality far different from that which he imagined.
- In 1937, the height of the Spanish Civil War, British journalist Sean Harris disappeared without a trace in Barcelona during an air raid. 80 years later, his American grandson, Tyler, comes to Barcelona hoping to figure out the truth behind Harris's disappearance. He goes to 4Gats, where Harris used to drink absinthe with Picasso and Hemingway, and meets a mysterious Englishman, who who warns him the bar was shut down during the Spanish Civil War because it was a gathering place for anti-fascist conspirators. He also reveals England and France sent secret agents to fight alongside the Republicans in the Spanish Civil War, and Franco's hitmen hunted them all down. Tyler shows the Englishman Harris's old Military ID, revealing he was British intelligence (and Journalist was his cover). The Englishman flips the page over, revealing Harris's picture, with matches the Englishman's face - Tyler met the ghost of his grandfather, Sean Harris, at the bar. The same day, Tyler meets Maria, a Spanish photographer, and the two begin a brief romance before Maria reveals they're unsafe, didn't meet by chance, and if Tyler wants to survive, he must meet her at the Bunkers above the city at sunrise. She too - it seems - was a ghost from the past. She rescues Tyler during a surprise encounter with one of Franco's hitmen, and at sunrise, reveals she's going to sacrifice herself to warn the citizens of Barcelona about an impending air raid. Tyler tells her to take cover, but she refuses, willing to give her life for "hundreds of theirs," and insisting Tyler's not in Barcelona to change the past. Tyler also encounters Harris on the hilltop, who realizes he's about to die, but implores Tyler to make sure his legacy is not forgotten. Tyler takes shelter as bombs fall on Barcelona. Recalling his earlier conversation with his grandfather, he realizes Harris said "absinthe was once a powerful hallucinogen," leaving the reality of his time-travel experience ambiguous. Inspired by his grandfather's heroism, he returns to Bunkers with a pen and paper, and begins writing his grandfather's story, which he titles "One Night in Barcelona."
