- Borchert and Dominique Kuster take over the defense of the taxi driver Jrg Zollinger. Captain Furrer suspects him of the murder of a passenger, the African investigative journalist Nuka Baluba. All the evidence incriminates the uncontrolled suspect, whose testimony initially seems unreliable. Borchert is suspicious of the fact that public prosecutor Dietrich is quick to commit to Zollinger. The "lawyer without a license" suspects that Baluba's research into child labor in cobalt mines in the Congo has something to do with the murder. During his research he came across the respected charity "Our Heart for Africa" by Henrik Wollschlger, whose patrons also included the upper class of the financial metropolis of Zurich and some wealthy clients of his old friend, the star lawyer Reto Zanger. In addition, shortly before his death, the murdered man had contact with Anneli Keller, the Africa expert at the Federal Foreign Office, and her boss Ulf Hellmann. Meanwhile, Dominique takes on the widow of the murdered journalist, Malia Baluba - without realizing that she is also in great danger.
- "Franz Brosi is innocent ..." - this anonymous message arouses the curiosity of the "lawyer without a license" Thomas Borchert. His clerk, Dominique, immediately knows who it is about: the cabinet maker Brosi was her first client as a public defender and has been in prison for the murder of a young banker for eleven years. She can hardly believe that someone is now claiming his innocence - after all, Brosi had refused her help at the time and made an extensive confession. But Borchert wouldn't be Borchert if he didn't want to get something out of the silent model convict. But Brosi, whom he visits with Dominique in prison, does not want any easing of detention or legal representation. But Borchert does not give up and he soon suspects that there must be more to the story of the repentant sinner who wants to serve the full sentence. While Dominique is getting the old police files from Captain Furrer, Borchert drives to Prättigau to find the anonymous letter writer. In Brosi's home village, the lawyer tries to find out on his own what really happened. Not only the onset of winter in the remote mountain world, but also the icy rejection of the residents makes him shiver. Borchert soon believes he is on the trail of a secret for which Brosi holds out his head.

When Borchert uncovers the web of lies and addictions, he sees the opportunity to help his client.

Ms. Lenze recovers after an appendicitis but has to work off the fees for her treatment by working as a nurse.
- The liberally minded German crown prince, then Emperor Friedrich III. is diagnosed for laryngeal cancer. But both the diagnosis and treatment by the surgeons of the Charité cannot save him and he dies after a mere 99 days of reign. His son, presumptuous and militaristic Wilhelm II. visits the Charité together with his wife. While the Empress embarasses the scientists with her wisdom gleaned from illustrated magazines, the Kaiser proceeds to inspect famous doctor Koch's bacteriology lab. Koch is speechless, so Bergmann saves the day by annoncing that German science will gain "victory" over the French at the upcoming international conference on medicine.
- The world's best physicians and scientists meet in Berlin for the congress on medicine. While all the doctors are there, Dr. Paul Ehrlich's wife has serious trouble giving birth. Young von Trautmannsdorf is off to his fraternity for dueling. Dr. Behring is the only surgeon available and saves Mrs. Ehrlich's life - but not her son's.
- Professor Koch begins trials for tuberculin, Berhing rushes through his trial for a diphtheria cure, and Nurse Theresa falls ill.
