- BREAKFAST IN BANGALORE THE PREMISE Breakfast in Bangalore is a multi cam sitcom about 3 American Born Confused Desi's, Swetha, Subu, and Tara, who are bought to Bangalore India by their parents so they might discover first hand what it means to be Indian. What ensues is a 'Fish out of water' non stop laughing culture clash as 3 ABCD's from New York struggle to fit in and find their place in a modern day India that is just as wacky and confused about it's identity as they are. Their Indianized American father and their Americanized Indian mother are of no help and their super traditional, Tam Bram 'Kitchen Nazi' Grandmother who comes to live with them is certainly not there to make their lives any easier. Especially since she's hell bent on turning them into traditional Tam Brams, arranged marriage and all. And did I forget to mention their Transgender maid who quickly develops a crush on Subu, the Dhobi who steals shirts and sells Dhobi insurance, the plumber who takes 10 hours to fix a leaky kitchen sink only to have fire come out instead of water, etc. etc. But in any good show it all comes down to the main characters: The 3 ABCD kids, endearing, quirky, and anything but normal. Swetha is a 17 yr old child prodigy turned wise ass computer hacker whose specialty is mobile phones. She's adorable, fearless and sharp tongued. A punkish looking rebel type with half her hair pink and half purple. She does not take guff from anyone, especially boys. Subu is a 19 yr old good looking not too bright, over hormoned master of disaster. He's boastful, lovable and easily misled. His main want is to become popular with the chicks and he mistakenly believes being an NRI will help him achieve this. But more often than not he needs his sister Swetha's help to actually impress them. Tara is a 21 yr old spunky, upbeat, over active activist. She is in her own world and feels her calling in life is to save the environment, the poor people and everything else that's wrong in India. Her thesis at college was titled 'Cockroaches have feelings too: so stop stepping on them'. She saves street dogs, homeless Gypsies and takes on the local garbage burners in her quest for a better India. The Parents. Mickey is the 50 something loving, caring, slightly hypocritical father. He is an ex Hippy musician turned IT professional who fell in love with India while living there as a young adult during the wild Goa, Guru days. We put Mickey in a lot of funny situations which highlight the difference in the way things are done in States vs the way in India. For example we see him attending the 'Hyderabad school of Lateness' so he could have a better understanding of why he's always waiting for people. He is the manager of an American owned software company and he finds himself dealing with employees whose grandmothers keep dying when they need a day off and security guards who want to work from home. But mostly Mickey is the one who bears the brunt of all the confusion and craziness generated by his family. Latha is a late 40's quirky, stylish, Americanized Tam Bram mother. A shopaholic with little or no patience for house work. A bit dizzy and loaded with idiosyncrasies. She struggles with the uneven sidewalks, her chapels getting dirty and her mother, who blames her for marrying a foreigner, moving to the states and not upholding the Indian traditions. The Grandmother. Patti. A 70's something cynically, stubborn, Traditional Tam Bram grandmother. A kitchen Nazi with a sharp tongue and no patience for anything. She is resentful that her daughter married a foreigner and takes it out on Mickey. She is wary of western influence on Indian culture but is quite fond of old American gangster movies. Patti represents the age old Indian tradition, trying to stay alive in a rapidly changing India. She is a major source of the family's conflicts and struggles, and her mission in life is to de westernize her grandchildren. Her prime focus, arrange Tara's marriage to a nice Tamil Brahmin boy. Even if the family knows nothing about it. The Maid. Jyothi. A young 30's transgender female with drag queen tendencies, a mind for everyone else's business but her own, and a passionate desire to be a Bollywood star. She's also developing a secret crush on Subu. The next door neighbors. The quirky, misfit couple Mr. and Mrs. Gupta and their son Ravi. Ravi is a thirty something useless good for nothing goofball who has developed a crush on Tara. The Gupta's biggest nightmare is that he will live with them for the rest of their lives as they can not find any match for him. So they develop a plan to push Ravi on Tara which creates a lot of fun through out the first season. For the viewers that is, but definitely not for Tara. Breakfast in Bangalore is a cheeky, edgy, irreverent sitcom depicting the American Indian sentiment meeting the Indian Indian sentiment. It is relevant, refreshingly different, and has lots of legs. The theme is very relatable for Indians, and would appeal to them both in India and abroad.
