In 1969, a deserter from the U.S. Army is sheltered by a Doukhobor family. Their stories are told through letters they are writing to each other but cannot send, because both are on the run.
Ava, a young counselor at a Christian camp on a Pacific coast island, meets two fugitives from El Salvador who are trying to cross the border into Canada. Over the course of a long day, she must decide whether to help them.
