- Imad (15), Nourdine (17), Walid (18) and Hamza (17) are a group of young Moroccan boys living in a cave under the lighthouse in the Spanish exclave, Melilla. They wait for their chance to cross the sea, spending their time with drugs, video calls with their mothers, and filming themselves for YouTube while breaking into the harbor. They admire Mohamed, an illegal Moroccan teenager and YouTube influencer in France, who is known for a video showing him swimming to Europe through the Mediterranean Sea. "Harraga, those who burn their lives," accompanies the four Moroccan teenagers over a period of five years, following their dreams, escape attempts, international escalations, and being with them when they make their successful escapes to Europe.
