Der amtsmüde bisherige Direktor Lauritz Bercelius hat heimlich eine Schülerbande namens "Schwarze Hand" aufgebaut, deren kecke Streiche seinen Wunsch nach baldiger Pensionierung unterstreichen sollen. Kristian wird aber durch einen Zufall zunächst verschont, weil die Lausbuben sein Hotelzimmer verwechseln. Dafür trifft es Walter, den pedantischen Verlobten von Bercelius' Nichte Felicitas. Auch Kristian ist von ihrem Charme fasziniert. Als ihn jedoch die "Schwarze Hand" zu einem fingierten Treffen mit Felicitas lockt, gerät das Rendezvous unversehens zum handgreiflichen Mißverständnis. Kristian glaubt jetzt, daß Felicitas nur die Gesteinsproben stehlen wollte. Mittlerweile sind auch Big Ben und Cindy in Waldsee eingetroffen. Es entwickelt sich eine turbulente Verfolgungsjagd, die mitten in die Feierlichkeit um Dr. Kellermanns Amtsantritt führt. Dieser steuert indes geradewegs auf einen explosiven Höhepunkt zu.
- Marek and Celia Dawidowicz are Jewish Poles, who live with their son, Kuba, and nine-year-old daughter, Janian, in Kalisch. As war approaches, the family moves to Warsaw, and Marek and Kuba go off to fight. Marek tries to get his wife to flee to the Russian zone, but she refuses, so Marek returns, and the family members, including her grandparents, are eventually packed off to the Ghetto. Next, using false papers, Janian is boarded in a monastery school. And when the Gestapo start sniffing around, she is transferred to another one. Having made it to the end of the war, however, bad news awaits her. Only one other family member has survived.
