- This is the story about the great man of Olderdalen which starts as a simple shop-owner in the country and ends up as a tycoon in the capital (right after WW1.)

His widow, Reve-enka (literally "the fox widow"), sits alone in her empty house with only her trusty feline maid Korse for company. The story is told in typical fairy tale style, with repetitions and characters speaking partly in rhyme. (There is also a live action opening and ending claiming to show how story collector Asbjørnsen discovered the original tale and recorded it for posterity.)

All this affects Gerner in a negative way, who is plagued by jealousy regarding people from Lucie's past. The relationship between the married couple keeps getting worse.
