- DirectorPhilip KaufmanStarsGeoffrey RushKate WinsletJoaquin PhoenixIn a Napoleonic era insane asylum, an inmate, the irrepressible Marquis De Sade, fights a battle of wills against a tyrannically prudish doctor.Date set: 1793
When the Marquis de Sade was imprisoned he always managed to find a way to deliver his messsage. Nothing could deter the Marquis de Sade, if he couldn't have a pen and ink, he wrote in blood, then when they took everything away, he would write in his own excrement. The man simply had the courage of his convictions and it showed. This French aristocrat was a head of his time and was well known for his literacy works of his libertine sexuality and lifestyle. Solid performace by all involved - DirectorMilos FormanStarsF. Murray AbrahamTom HulceElizabeth BerridgeThe life, success and troubles of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, as told by Antonio Salieri, the contemporaneous composer who was deeply jealous of Mozart's talent and claimed to have murdered him.Date set: 1781-1823
My absolute favourite movie of all time. Watched it so many times I know line by line off by heart. Having been one of the fortunate few to see the play it's based on, and watching the movie, I must write this is a gorgous movie. Antonio Salieri, the jealous composer who sees the genius in Mozart is masterfully played by F. W. Abraham and Tom Hulce as the lead role of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, plays him with a child like quality, who takes his gift for granted. True, this is not an historic account of Mozart, but who cares, this is a truly wonderful movie***SPOILER***The ending where Salieri is scribbling down a requim music from the dying Mozart, reminds me of a parasite, sucking the life from white faced composer, clearly ignoring the fact Mozart is near death. - DirectorPen DenshamStarsRobin WrightMorgan FreemanStockard ChanningThe daughter of a thief, young Moll is placed in the care of a nunnery after her mother's execution, but the actions of an abusive priest lead her to rebel as a teenager, and she escapes to the dangerous streets of London. I was truly surprised in the production and the reasons are: (1) this is the one movie inwhich Kiera Knighly shines as the vulnuerable Georgiana. It is a strong performance and a challenging one (2) the costume-gorgeously true to the period and I will not bore you with the wigs...excellent. (3) the plot: it seems like something that the BBC would produce; good solid storyline, strong acting and wonderful set design.
***SPOILER***it was a emotional scene where Georgiana gave birth to one of her children, who was not sired by her husband, and was forced to give infant to her lover's family. - StarsSean BeanSaskia WickhamJonny PhillipsA virtuous young woman is oppressed by her ambitious family and a rake who's becomes obsessed with her.Date set:1732 or 1749
I waited so long for this to be released in my DVD region code; for I've seen this 10 years ago. Sean Bean is wonderful as the snake like womanizer Robert Lovelace and Saskia Wickham is perfectly cast as the purely, virginal Clarissa Harlow with high morals, who is Lovelace's prey
***SPOILER*** THERE IS A RAPE SCENE. Not to everyone's taste, but it shows the enormous lenghts Lovelace is willing to go to in order to achieve his goal.
***Trivia***this production, had an enormous budget and it is reflected in the set locations and the on scene set. The wigs and the costumes are exquisitely done. "It's beyond my control"
One of my favourite movies of all times, I ruined by video tape of this movie, having watched it so many times. Sex, scandels, lust, romance, jeolousy, deception and pure unadulterated wickedness, that sums up Dangerous Liaisons. John Malcovich is perfectly casted as Vicomte de Valmont, who is 'recruited' by ex-lover Madame de Tourvel (played by wonderfully by Glen Close) to seduce Cecile de Volanges (Uma Thurman). But the unexpected happens to Valmont who is in the pursuit of another prey Madame de Tourvel (Michelle Phieffer).

The French people had enough of living in poverty and being treated like dirt while the upper crust live like royalty. I didn't know this until I saw this movie. Hilary Swank is at her most feminine playing the vengeful Jeanne St. Remy de Valois. The costume is divine and true to the period. There are a number of well known actors in this movie. Loved Joely Richardson as Marie-Antoinette, who is unaware for the conspiracy surrounding her.

If you ever are interested in Moll Flanders, this is the nearest adaptation to the novel by Daniel Defoe. Alex Kingston, great choice for the leading part of Moll Flanders, the conniving, sly con artist and thief trying to raise herself above her social status. Written by Andrew Davies, this production delivers. Don't even bother with the American version with Robin Wright Penn, many parts of the book are missing, but it's up to you to decide which is better.

I've seen black black and white version of Marie Antoinette (1938). Call me old fashion, but I enjoyed this version than the modern 2006 production with Sofia Coppola. Sure it can boost it was shot at the Palace of Versailles and the costume and wigs were authentic. But me personally, Kristen Dunst looked to modern and still looked like cheerleader than a Queen. While, the 1938 version shows the life a young girl thrusted it the French court to the end of her life, when the meets the guillotine. Very lavish costume and set designs

An interesting film by Miloš Forman, director of the award winning Amadeus. This is by no means one of Miloš finest, but it does stand up to measure.
The film actually spans into the Regency Era (which is it is also listed in my other Period Dramas list:Regency Erra).
Stellan Skarsgård as the lead role of Goya, one Hollywood's most hard working actors (He has been in the acting industry since 1968). Natalie Portman show what a talent she is as the innocent Inés, daughter of t a rich merchant who is thrown into prison for spreading "judaizing". She also plays a duel role, as her daughter Alice.
One thing I must add is the the costume (by Yvette Blake) and design of this production. Top notch very authetic. So based on the following I have decided to place all the films in the Georgian era:
1) King George is mentioned several times in the films...there is no mention of which King George
2) The Tricorn Hats virtually on very head of anyone who is in the film. Very popular in the 18th Century but not in the 19th century. The tricorn hat evolved into the Bicorn hat...which you notice Napolean loves to don on.
3) Kierya Knightly's costume in the 1st & 2nd film ( looking purely on the back and the bodice of her costume...dead give away
4) The Black Pearl looks like a square-rigged ship. These ships always had three or more mast; a very popular ship which began in the 16th century

Then arrives Madame Therbouche, a flirtatious painter, from the Prussian metropolis Berlin, and convinces Diderot to pose for her more daring then his idol fellow-philosopher Voltaire in Berlin: in the nude, leading to an animated row with his wife Antoinette, still naked except for a very unsteady sheet, all over the estate's park. Worse, the saucy scene is witnessed by a feared visitor, Holbach's brother the Cardinal, who is hunting for the illegal Encyclopaedia printers; to divert him, the baroness confesses her real and imagined sins since years and next sends in every female to do the same, later joined spontaneously by chevalier (marquis in the end credits) de Jerfeuil, who got a livelier show the he bargained for when accepting to be shown two inseparable marquis's 'sabre collection' which proves not of the military variety. The baroness also treats her guests to (then) most exotic foods and naughty pictures, yet even for her the freedman Turkish hamam eunuch Mohamed takes hospitality for female guests too far into intimate massage to their taste. His personal experience keeps changing Diderot's ideas, and therefore the article he is writing on 'morale' (morality). Secrets end up getting out, both the portraitist's true agenda and what goes on in the chapel, which the Cardinal finally gets into to 'recollect himself' after hearing so many unsettling lustful sins...
