- DirectorKathryn BigelowStarsRalph FiennesAngela BassettJuliette LewisA former cop turned street-hustler accidentally uncovers a conspiracy in Los Angeles in 1999.Not a movie for everyone but one of my personal favorites.
- DirectorFred BarzykDavid R. LoxtonStarsBruce DavisonPeyton E. ParkNiki FlacksIn a highly controlled and overpopulated society, a man who has terrifying dreams that affect reality is assigned a psychiatrist who takes advantage of the situation.Hard to find but worth checking out. Like Inception it plays with the notion of "dreams" but in a very surprising and ahead of its time fashion.
- DirectorJamin WinansStarsChristopher Soren KellyQuinn HuncharJessica DuffyA mysterious creature, known as Ink, steals a child's soul in hopes of using it as a bargaining chip to join the Incubi - the group of supernatural beings responsible for creating nightmares.Much like "The Lathe of Heaven" also explores the notion of "Dreams" but in a more fantastical and otherworldly way.
- DirectorSatoshi KonStarsMegumi HayashibaraTôru EmoriKatsunosuke HoriWhen a machine that allows therapists to enter their patients' dreams is stolen, all hell breaks loose. Only a young female therapist, Paprika, can stop it.As far as movies about "Dreams" this takes the cake. Visually it's very stunning, musically is gorgeous, and the story will suck you in. From the late director Satoshi Kon.
- DirectorGregg ArakiStarsJames DuvalRachel TrueNathan BextonFollows a day in the lives of a group of Los Angeles high school students and the strange lives they lead. The third movie in Gregg Araki's "Doom Generation" trilogy. Unlike his previous movie Doom Generation, Nowhere is a bit more surreal and random but one of my personal favorites.
- DirectorAlex ProyasStarsRufus SewellKiefer SutherlandJennifer ConnellyA man struggles with memories of his past, which include a wife he cannot remember and a nightmarish world no one else ever seems to wake up from."The Matrix before The Matrix" as its been called. Any one who is a fan of Science Fiction this is a must.
- DirectorDan O'BannonStarsClu GulagerJames KarenDon CalfaWhen two bumbling employees at a medical supply warehouse accidentally release a deadly gas into the air, the vapors cause the dead to rise again as zombies.Lesser known zombie gems from the 80's. Its both a parody as well as a serious zombie movie.
- DirectorJohn CarpenterStarsKurt RussellKim CattrallDennis DunA rough-and-tumble trucker and his side kick face off with an ancient sorcerer in a supernatural battle beneath Chinatown. One of John Carpenters lesser known works. Kurt Russel lives it up as wannabe hero Jack Burton. Not a "great" movie but guaranteed to be fun.
- DirectorAndrew LaneStarsWayne CrawfordDennis ChristopherKaren KopinsIn a world where, unbeknownst to the public, all famous pulp fiction heroes are real, one of them, Jake Speed, agrees to help desperate Margaret Winston save her sister from sadistic white slaver Sid, who's operating in Africa.Much like Big Trouble, this isn't a "great" movie by any regards but definitely lots of fun. Has one of the best performances by John Hurt as Sid and catch Karen Kopins of Once Bitten fame as well.
- DirectorFred DekkerStarsJason LivelyTom AtkinsSteve MarshallAlien brain parasites, entering humans through the mouth, turn their host into a killing zombie. Some teenagers start to fight against them. For horror fans, this movie is for you. Is a combination of 50's science fiction, college drama, 80's comedy and zombie movie all rolled into one.
- DirectorMatthias DinterStarsTino MewesManuel CortezThomas SchmiederThree not-so-cool school friends decide to try a old voodoo ritual. Later, they die in a car accident, but live on as zombies. But being a zombie has advantages, too...Take your typical zombie movie and throw it in a blender with your quirky teenage comedy and this is what you get.
- DirectorStevan MenaStarsDavid NaughtonBrian O'HalloranGerry BednobDavid Naughton stars as famed horror director Harry Penderecki whose career has been plagued by violent mishaps and critics' attacks.Again for fans of horror movies this is a must. Catch various cameos from horror icons. Best mockumentary this side of Spinal Tap.
- DirectorPark Chan-wookStarsChoi Min-sikYoo Ji-taeKang Hye-jeongAfter being kidnapped and imprisoned for fifteen years, Oh Dae-Su is released, only to find that he must track down his captor in five days.If you haven't seen it, which you probably haven't otherwise it wouldn't be on this list, your missing out. This is generally a wonderful film that, as of this posting, has yet to be made state side and thank god for that. Part of the revenge trilogy this movie stands out as one of the top movies on this list.
- DirectorMichael TrainaStarsChris JaymesBrian GattasBen CaswellA chain-smoking trouble-maker enters a poetry contest at a local café, where he faces off against some heavy hitters including a handsome easy-going favorite. In the café, he makes friends with a blonde, who has relationship commitment problems and a political activist, who has another more personal secret. The film stays at the café and relies on its wordsmithing to keep the audience involved.Another lesser known Asian flick. Part gangster drama, part zombie movie. The pacing starts and stops but is still very enjoyable.
- DirectorTakashi MiikeStarsTadanobu AsanoNao ÔmoriShin'ya TsukamotoAs sadomasochistic yakuza enforcer Kakihara searches for his missing boss he comes across Ichi, a repressed and psychotic killer who may be able to inflict levels of pain that Kakihara has only dreamed of achieving. One of Takashi Miike's better known films. Graphic and absurd at times but a fun movie if you don't mind gratuitous gore and awkward sexual dysfunctions
- DirectorTimur BekmambetovStarsKonstantin KhabenskiyVladimir MenshovMariya PoroshinaA fantasy-horror set in present-day Moscow where the respective forces that control daytime and nighttime do battle. An interesting movie. A Russian version of Underworld only with a lot more story and less vampires.
- DirectorAnnette Haywood-CarterStarsHedy BurressAngelina JolieJenny LewisLegs Sadovsky gets four other high school girls to think for themselves and react to a teacher's sexual harassment, which gets them suspended. They bond, and rebel, at an abandoned house.A bit of a dark romance, and not for everyone but catch a young Angelina Jolie in one of her grittier roles.
- DirectorIain SoftleyStarsJonny Lee MillerAngelina JolieJesse BradfordTeenage hackers discover a criminal conspiracy with plans to use a computer virus that will capsize five oil tankers.Another early Angelina movie, the characters in this movie totally drive the story. Also one of Mathew Lillard more memorable, early performances.
- DirectorTerry GilliamStarsJohnny DeppBenicio Del ToroTobey MaguireAn oddball journalist and his psychopathic lawyer travel to Las Vegas for a series of psychedelic escapades. One of those "in between" movies for Johnny Depp. Directed by former Monty Python Terry Gilliam. His visual styling lends its self perfectly to the cautionary tale written by Hunter S. Thompson. Also keep your eyes peeled for a Cameo of Hunter himself.
- DirectorScott SandersStarsMichael Jai WhiteArsenio HallTommy DavidsonBlack Dynamite is the greatest African-American action star of the 1970s. When his only brother is killed by The Man, it's up to him to find justice. The good/bad of blaxploitation all in one movie. And by bad I mean hysterically bad. A great comedy that both mocks and personify the films of an era.
- DirectorPrachya PinkaewStarsJeeJa YaninHiroshi AbePongpat WachirabunjongAn autistic girl with powerful martial art skills looks to settle her ailing mother's debts by seeking out the ruthless gangs that owe her family money. From the same people that brought you Ong-bak, this martial arts movie combines the hard hitting Muay Thai of the previously mentioned movie with a wonderfully added dose of comedy.
- DirectorBrian Trenchard-SmithRussell HaggStarsHenry ThomasTony BarryRachel FriendA resourceful American orphan living in rural Australia finds himself caught up in the magic of a local Aboriginal myth that might be more real than anyone knows. For any kid that grew up in the 80's this should be a nostalgic trip. Staring Henry Thomas, of ET fame, and set in Australia. Both sophisticated and enjoyable it doesn't dumb its self down despite being a kids movie.
- DirectorFred DekkerStarsAndre GowerRobby KigerStephen MachtA group of young monster fanatics attempts to save their hometown from Count Dracula and his monsters.Speaking of 80's nostalgia, another gem from director Fred Dekker (Night of the Creeps). Cashing in on Goonies fame, its both kid and adult friendly.
- DirectorSteve MinerStarsWilliam KattKay LenzGeorge WendtA troubled writer moves into a haunted house after inheriting it from his aunt.Dekker again combines his love of horror films with a innate sense of comedy in this classic.
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsNicolas CagePatricia ArquetteJohn GoodmanHaunted by the patients he failed to save, a monumentally burned-out Manhattan ambulance paramedic fights to maintain his sanity over three increasingly turbulent nights.Directed by Marin Scorsese, and staring Nic Cage (before he bottomed out) this movie isn't one of the greats but does have the typical Scorsese feel and will not disappoint.
