Cal's Top Movies
For me, deciding on a Top Movies is not something that can be easily done. However, this is a basic list that gives a general idea of what movies I like, and is as close as I can do to giving an accurate display of some of my most liked movies. The order is all over the place because I am mostly adding titles as I think of them. I know that most the films are from the last 25 years, but I hope to find some more older movies I like soon!
So enjoy, my Top Movies, or as close as can possibly be!

- DirectorEdgar WrightStarsSimon PeggNick FrostKate AshfieldThe uneventful, aimless lives of a London electronics salesman and his layabout roommate are disrupted by the zombie apocalypse.
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsLiam NeesonRalph FiennesBen KingsleyIn German-occupied Poland during World War II, industrialist Oskar Schindler gradually becomes concerned for his Jewish workforce after witnessing their persecution by the Nazis. They say there is no perfect film. That may be true, but if there was one, I imagine it would be Schindler's List. I wouldn't say it's a movie I'd rush to rewatch, but it's position as a masterpiece is undeniable, and upon watching it, you're affected deeply in ways that few other films can accomplish.
- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsChristian BaleHeath LedgerAaron EckhartWhen the menace known as the Joker wreaks havoc and chaos on the people of Gotham, Batman must accept one of the greatest psychological and physical tests of his ability to fight injustice.A lot of people would deride this choice, but its flaws aside, this movie is as amazing as I could ever hope a Batman movie to be, which I'll admit, owes a great deal to Ledger's amazing performance.
- DirectorLuc BessonStarsJean RenoGary OldmanNatalie Portman12-year-old Mathilda is reluctantly taken in by Léon, a professional assassin, after her family is murdered. An unusual relationship forms as she becomes his protégée and learns the assassin's trade. This one is a little difficult to explain... all I know is that I just really like this movie. I suppose you could say I love a story of platonic love, and add lots of guns, assassins and an over the top villain played by Gary Oldman, and you've got something truly fantastic.
- DirectorJim HensonStarsDavid BowieJennifer ConnellyToby FroudSixteen-year-old Sarah must solve a labyrinth to rescue her baby brother when he is taken by the Goblin King.An adventure movie with puppets and David Bowie. I really don't think anything else needs to be said.
- DirectorFrank CapraStarsJames StewartDonna ReedLionel BarrymoreAn angel is sent from Heaven to help a desperately frustrated businessman by showing him what life would have been like if he had never existed.A truly amazing movie that makes you think about your own life, about what would be different if you weren't around. It's a movie that makes you want to be a better person.
- DirectorStanley DonenGene KellyStarsGene KellyDonald O'ConnorDebbie ReynoldsA silent film star falls for a chorus girl just as he and his delusionally jealous screen partner are trying to make the difficult transition to talking pictures in 1920s Hollywood.Heck, this one would make it on here if only for Donald O'Connor's musical number Make 'Em Laugh, but this is also an all around quirky, feel good movie that I couldn't help fall in love with.
- DirectorBilly WilderStarsTyrone PowerMarlene DietrichCharles LaughtonA veteran British barrister must defend his client in a murder trial that has surprise after surprise. My favourite Wilder movie. Like most of his, it tells a great story while overflowing with wit and fun. I consider it to have one of the best climaxes around.
- DirectorPeter JacksonStarsElijah WoodIan McKellenOrlando BloomA meek Hobbit from the Shire and eight companions set out on a journey to destroy the powerful One Ring and save Middle-earth from the Dark Lord Sauron.
- DirectorPeter JacksonStarsElijah WoodIan McKellenViggo MortensenWhile Frodo and Sam edge closer to Mordor with the help of the shifty Gollum, the divided fellowship makes a stand against Sauron's new ally, Saruman, and his hordes of Isengard.
- DirectorPeter JacksonStarsElijah WoodViggo MortensenIan McKellenGandalf and Aragorn lead the World of Men against Sauron's army to draw his gaze from Frodo and Sam as they approach Mount Doom with the One Ring.I guess you could say this trilogy makes the list because it's a true movie experience, an epic in every sense of the word.
- DirectorJoseph L. MankiewiczStarsLaurence OlivierMichael CaineAlec CawthorneA man who loves games and theater invites his wife's lover to meet him, setting up a battle of wits with potentially deadly results.
- DirectorMori MasakiStarsIssei MiyazakiCatherine BattistoneYoshie ShimamuraA powerful statement against war, Barefoot Gen is a disturbing story about the effect of the atomic bomb on a boy's life and the lives of the Japanese people.A really powerful movie. The scenes of Hiroshima after the bomb are horrific and haunting. It's a movie that not enough people have seen.
- DirectorTim BurtonStarsJohnny DeppMartin LandauSarah Jessica ParkerAmbitious but troubled movie director Edward D. Wood Jr. tries his best to fulfill his dreams despite his lack of talent.
- DirectorKatsuhiro ÔtomoStarsMitsuo IwataNozomu SasakiMami KoyamaA secret military project endangers Neo-Tokyo when it turns a biker gang member into a rampaging psychic psychopath who can only be stopped by a teenager, his gang of biker friends and a group of psychics.
- DirectorAdam ElliotStarsToni CollettePhilip Seymour HoffmanEric BanaIn 1976 Melbourne, a lonely 8-year-old girl strikes up a correspondence with an unlikely pen pal: a severely obese 44-year-old New Yorker with Asperger's syndrome.A movie that's consistently hilarious while keeping a firm grip on your heart. The fact that this was passed over for a Best Animated Feature nomination (or heck, it deserved a nomination in Best Picture) is just plain not right.
- DirectorGeorge A. RomeroStarsDavid EmgeKen ForeeScott H. ReinigerDuring an escalating zombie epidemic, two Philadelphia SWAT team members, a traffic reporter and his TV executive girlfriend seek refuge in a secluded shopping mall. The definitive zombie movie... it manages to be endlessly entertaining while maintaining a overwhelming sense of doom.
- DirectorHal AshbyStarsRuth GordonBud CortVivian PicklesYoung, rich, and obsessed with death, Harold finds himself changed forever when he meets lively septuagenarian Maude at a funeral. The sort of movie that works as well today as I imagine it did over 40 years ago... it's such a weird and wonderful movie, and made me a fan of the music of Cat Stevens.
- DirectorSydney PollackStarsDustin HoffmanJessica LangeTeri GarrMichael Dorsey, an unsuccessful actor, disguises himself as a woman in order to get a role on a trashy hospital soap.A rare cross-dressing movie that is actually believable (not to mention funny), I was absorbed by watching Dustin Hoffman fool everyone with his brilliant performance.
- DirectorRichard CurtisStarsHugh GrantMartine McCutcheonLiam NeesonFollows the lives of eight very different couples in dealing with their love lives in various loosely interrelated tales all set during a frantic month before Christmas in London, England.I'll admit that I'm a sucker for a good romantic comedy... and I love that this movie does not try to deny what it is... a schmaltzy group of stories that melt your heart. Plus, Alan Rickman, Liam Neeson and Bill Nighy in one movie? That's a recipe for a winner in itself.
- DirectorAlfred HitchcockStarsJames StewartJohn DallFarley GrangerTwo men try to convince themselves they've committed the perfect murder by hosting a dinner party after strangling a former classmate to death.
- DirectorKinji FukasakuStarsTatsuya FujiwaraAki MaedaTarô YamamotoIn the future, the Japanese government captures a class of ninth-grade students and forces them to kill one another under the revolutionary "Battle Royale" act.A whole bunch of teenagers wasting each other for two hours. Does it make me a bad person to say the concept alone makes this movie awesome? Probably, but the movie itself is fantastic, if sometimes a little cheesy, as well.
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsHarrison FordKaren AllenPaul FreemanIn 1936, archaeologist and adventurer Indiana Jones is hired by the U.S. government to find the Ark of the Covenant before the Nazis can obtain its awesome powers.
- DirectorRob ReinerStarsCary ElwesMandy PatinkinRobin WrightA bedridden boy's grandfather reads him the story of a farmboy-turned-pirate who encounters numerous obstacles, enemies and allies in his quest to be reunited with his true love.
- DirectorLee UnkrichStarsTom HanksTim AllenJoan CusackThe toys are mistakenly delivered to a day-care center instead of the attic right before Andy leaves for college, and it's up to Woody to convince the other toys that they weren't abandoned and to return home.
