Loved it, loved it, loved it. A very good BBC production and one of the best...apart from the 2005 film of the same name with Keira Knightly. If you have not see then production, you must do so. Though it may seem dated to many, the costume, the dances, good and even the location is absolutely wonderful. Detail in every piece of furniture, cutlery, etiquette, dancing, dialogue and drama...everything you can ask for a Regency drama. Obviously the production staff read the book and have made a real effort to stick the Jane Austen's masterpiece.
Sadly, now everytime I see Colin Firth on screen, I cannot help thing of Mr Darcy.
***Trivia*** Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle were reported to be lovers during the production. They also acted again in the 2010 film "The King's Speech." - StarsMatthew MacfadyenClaire FoyTom CourtenayThe Dorrits are a family whose life revolves around the Marshalsea, a debtor's prison. I know many are screaming it doesn't belong in this time period; it's VICTORIAN, though it was published in 1855-1857, Dickens actually wrote the novel before Queen Victoria ascended to the Throne of England. It can be translatted into a Victorian drama. For me it is Regence due to the following: one other thing that is obvious that it's not victorian is the empire waist line dresses and two, the character Rigaud is French and it's mentions his past about the French war and the revolution.
This is a very, very good series. I quiet enjoyed it all, with the exception of one or two things. (1)The debts prison the cleanest I've ever seen (cleaner than my house), why leave? Surely the BBc could of "grubbed" it up a bit with dirt (2) some parts of the series were weaker than others. but what made it a great series is Andy Serkis as the villan Rigaud

Placing the two movies of Persuasion 1995 and 2007. I, personally, preferred the 1995 production. I know there are a number of people who like the 2007 TV production with Rupert Penry-Jones and Sally Hawkins. There are three things that I did not like about it. (1) the use of modern terminology in the adaption. i.e.Mary Musgrove dialogue there is clear evidence about that. (2) Anne talking speak to the camera, very off putting. (3) the ending: did she have to be running all over Bath to find Wentworth. Technically she would be so hot, thirsty, sweaty, smelly and exhausted, a kiss would be the last thing on her mind when she finally bumped into him. Wentworth should of taken her out of the hot sun, sat her down and gave her a drink of water!
I was most fortunate to watch the 1995 Persuasion on the big screen and loved it. Some may disagree but I think this is the better production. WHY: the reasons are (1)Cast:The leading actors look the right age and they don't look modern or out of place. (2) the adaptation: it follows the book and there are numerous lines straight from the pages of the novel

Their conflict impacts lives, including Fantine's daughter Cosette, against the backdrop of 19th-century France. Why??? is it here? Well this series covers early 1800 and spans roughly 20 years. I liked this one better than the 1998 version with Liam Neeson, Geoffrey Rush and Uma Thurman as Fontaine. Firstly, the style, setting and production. All wonderfully French, and best adaption of Victor Hugo's novel 'Les Misérables'. It's refreshing to hear it spoke in it's natural language:French and not in a British or American accent. (2) The cast: perfect except Enrico Lo Verso (some may disagree) which I found he annoyed me everytime he was in a scene. I wished Charlotte Gainsbourg's Fantine was more of a challenging role for her, ultimately the character scripted for her is weak. (3) Gérard Depardieu perfectly cast as Jean Valjean, well balanced out with John Malkovich as Javert.

(2) custom: I marvelled at the custome designers who came up with the wonderful outfits Abbie Cornish had to wear. (3) casting: a round of applause for the cast director Nina Gold. All actors & actresses, both leading and supporting was faultless. Acitng was beyong faultless. Everything fits.

Unable to return home and tell his daughter that he has lost her in a game of dice, Sir Giles kills himself there and then. Lord Justin Vulcan (Marcus Gilbert), who has witnessed the events, takes pity on Serena Staverley, although they have never met. He challenges Lord Harry Wrotham to a game of dice in which the winner takes Staverley Court and Miss Serena. Lord Justin Vulcan wins and is simply pleased that he has saved someone from the nasty Wrotham, he thinks no more about the event. When arriving there, Vulcan finds Serena Staverley more beautiful than he ever imagined.Date set:1810
I dare anyone to say "Hey I saw this movie". Yes, I have seen it on but in video form only. It has adventure, love and romance, duels and a young girl in danger. An extremely young Helena Bonham Carter, as the beginning of her career stars as Serena Staverley. This production does boast a number or well know stars including Diana Rigg (The Avengers) Edward Fox and Christopher Plummer.

For those who have yet, you mut think outside the box first. I enjoyed this adaption, where modern day Amanda Price swaps roles with Elizabeth Bennett (played by Gemma Arterton) and, in all honesty, the cast are the right ages and look to play many beloved characters. - DirectorCurtis BernhardtStarsStewart GrangerElizabeth TaylorPeter UstinovIn 1796, Captain George Bryan "Beau" Brummell of the 10th Royal Hussars Regiment offends the Prince of Wales with his straightforward outspokenness and gets fired from the Army but is chosen as the Prince's personal advisor.Date set: 1811-1840
This is an interesting film for those who are like to know a bit of history. Please don't think this is a historical fact on Beau Brummell's life...by no means it's not. It is more of a love story then an true biography. It does however deplict Beau's rise in the English regiment, his friendship with the Prince Regent (who late became King George IV), his fall into debt, self imposed exile in France and his death. And ofcourse it has the lovely Elizabeth Taylor as the object of Mr Brummell's affection. - DirectorPhilippa LowthorpeStarsJames PurefoyHugh BonnevillePhil DavisGeorge 'Beau' Brummel, a penniless but witty London gentleman, maintains a refined lifestyle with his loyal servant, cook Robinson. Only the friendship of the unpopular Hanoverian heir and Prince Regent, George, Prince of Wales, who acclaims Brummel's fashionable invention, dandy-ism, keeps the creditors from his back, even allows him unconditional credit. Alas a triangle with lady Julia and the equally dubious poet Lord Byron ends up costing him the prince's favor, so his debts come bite him with a vengeance.Date Set: between 1811-1813 (there abouts)
It does not even bother to go into Beau's childhood, instead the mini-series focus mainly on the friendship of Mr Brummell and the Prince Regent. As well as the fall of Brummell into spirlling debt and his consequental dowfall.
Having seen both versions of this man (1954 & 2006), I never really knew how much is man had revolutionised the way men dressed. Sure he was a dandy and considered a flop, but it was a welcome relief from the powdered wigs and frills of years past. Sadly though Beau took too much for granted, especially his friendship with the Prince Regent. One thing I did like was the depliction by the actor and the director to show how Brummell came to dress the way he did and made men's wear fashionable. I did prefer both movies; and James Purefoy show he is a diverse actor, having played a Roman in the TV series "Rome" and a dandy in Beau Brummell - StarsBenedict CumberbatchJared HarrisJamie SivesIn 1812, young British aristocrat Edmund Talbot travels by ship to Australia, and learns more about himself and about life than he had ever bargained for.Date set: 1812
Overall not a bad story, a young man leaves England to travel to the far reaches of Australia. Along on the journey, he meets the strange characters on the ship, finds love, loses love and re-unites with her again. Fabulous to see Sam Neil in a any production. It just makes you simply nauseatingly seasick when you see the action on the ship...feels like you're on it.

No doubt many would enjoy this musical, but for me I sadly am a bit conflicted because I seen the Les Misérables: The Dream Cast in Concert edition of Les Miserables on TV with two brillant power houses: Colm Wilkinson as Jean Valjean and Philip Quast as Inspector Javert. It's not to say Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe were wrongly cast. No, they were a good in casting those two with so was Anne Hathway as Fantine. What annoyed me, was the singing by Russell Crowe as Javet. Hugh Jackman has a background in musical Theatre, having started in Australia and landing the role of Gaston in Disney's "Beauty and the Beast"; hence good casting...but Russell Crowe!!! What the Hell were they thinking???? He does not have the vocol range or contol to hit the high emotional notes, and this is most evident in Javert's Suicide song on the roof tops.

An interesting film by Miloš Forman, director of the award winning
Amadeus. This is by no means one of Miloš finest, but it does stand up to measure.
The film actually began in the late Georgian Era (which is it is also listed in my other Period Dramas list:Georgian Era).
Stellan Skarsgård as the lead role of Goya, one Hollywood's most hard working actors (He has been in the acting industry since 1968). Natalie Portman show what a talent she is as the innocent Inés, daughter of t a rich merchant who is thrown into prison for spreading "judaizing". She also plays a duel role, as her daughter Alice.
