He is assigned to the Pavia Division on the southern line in Egypt. Rommel and the Axis forces are bogged down; it's October, the British prepare an offensive. At first, boredom, heat, hunger, and thirst bedevil the Italians; then the Brits attack, and there's no luck or heroism in death. Finally, it's retreat in confusion. Serra, his sergeant Rizzo, and his lieutenant Fiori take a last walk toward home. It's said that each soldier gets three miracles; when Serra's are used up, what then?Excellent classic-style recounting with a rare view of the Italian side during the battle for El Alamein in 1942.
- DirectorSergey BondarchukStarsLyudmila SavelevaVyacheslav TikhonovSergey BondarchukThe Russian aristocracy prepares for the French invasion on the eve of 1812.Massive Russian version (about 8 hours !)of "War and Peace", largely dealing with Napoleonic Wars of the beginning of 19th century. 5 years in the making with 10.000's of extras. Doesn't have Henry Fonda or Audrey Hepburn but the sheer scale of the thing just steamrollers over anything comparable.

The Allies are approaching Paris and resistance groups within the city start to plan an uprising against the Germans. However, Hitler wants the city destroyed if it looks like the Allies will take it.OK, there are some US actors but this is mainly a French show, their own version of the Longest day, being the liberation of Paris in 1944. A bit overambitious but definitely worth a look. Includes almost all major French stars of that time.
- DirectorBertrand TavernierStarsPhilippe NoiretSabine AzémaPascale VignalIntense character study of men and women driven by an overpowering obsession with the past. Not much fighting here as it treats mainly the aftermath and traumatizing effect of WWI on the French people. Several escape attempts follow until they are eventually sent to a seemingly inescapable fortress.Famous French war movie by acclaimed director Jean Renoir on French prisoners of war and their German captors during WWI. They try to escape ofcourse but why ? They were better off in a prison camp then the carnage in the WWI trenches !
With Jean Gabin and Erich von Stroheim as the disabled German colonel. - DirectorNanni LoyStarsRaffaele BarbatoCharles BelmontRegina BianchiThe film shows the history of the Neapolitan popular revolt against the invading Germans during World War II. During the four days in Naples, the revolt turns over in just a few hours. Neapolitans slung on rifles and guns or armed themselves with stones, house-objects, gasoline-bottles, anything and everything, anonymous and silent. Gennarino Capuozzo, a 10-year-old killed on a barricade while he was fighting against the invaders, is remembered as a hero.Spirited account on how the Italian people forced the Germans to turn Naples into an open city in 1944. - DirectorPekka ParikkaStarsTaneli MäkeläVesa VierikkoTimo TorikkaIn 1939, two Finnish brothers are conscripted in the army to fight in the war between Finland and the Soviet Union.Disturbing and realistic account of the Finno-Russsian winter war from 1939-40. The Finns caused the Russians heavy casulaties but were overwhelmed by sheer number and in the end had to agree to some sort odd truce (already broken with the arrival of the Germans in 1941). Most expensive Finnish movie ever made and it shows !
- DirectorFrançois TruffautStarsCatherine DeneuveGérard DepardieuJean PoiretIn occupied Paris, an actress married to a Jewish theater owner must keep him hidden from the Germans while doing both of their jobs.Ok not much battle action here, but this is a very entertaining and charming film on life in Paris during the German occupation. - DirectorClaude PinoteauStarsVincent PerezGéraldine PailhasMatthieu RozéBetween the Liberation of Paris at the end of August 1944 and the end of the Second World War in May 1945, 9 months passed. Nurse Christiane Mercier and F.F.I. Michel Fournier falls in love each during the Liberation.Pretty grim tale of the French vs. Germans by the end of 1944 in the snowy Vosges mountains. Very true to the facts and excellent period hardware, including a bunch of real Shermans and even a Royal Tiger tank. No wonder it's all so real as the director was there fighting in 1944.
- DirectorWim VerstappenStarsFrederik de GrootLeen JongewaardCoen FlinkIn a Dutch village during the German occupation, a small group of badly organized resistance fighters attempt to assassinate a collaborator.Sober but engrossing story on clumsy resistance fighters in occupied Holland during 1943. - DirectorKaren ShakhnazarovStarsAleksey VertkovVitaliy KishchenkoValeriy GrishkoGreat Patriotic War, early 1940s. After barely surviving a battle with a mysterious, ghostly-white Tiger tank, Red Army Sergeant Ivan Naydenov becomes obsessed with its destruction.Almost 'Stalker'-like tale of a white Tiger tank that appears every so often to harras the Russians and then disappears again, as it was a ghost. Well done and not as flagwaving as most other Russian movies on WWII.
- DirectorCosta-GavrasStarsCharles VanelBruno CremerJean-Claude BrialyA French resistance group liberates some prisoners from the German. Could one of the prisoners be a spy?Orginal title is "One man too many". This is about the French resistance vs the occupying German troops, mainly set in the Vercors region. Made by acclaimed director Costa Garvas (Z, The Music Box,...) this movie was long out of the public eye mainly due to copyright problems. But it is well worth the wait, as this proves a fastmoving and spectacular account of deceit and lost causes.
- DirectorBertrand TavernierStarsPhilippe TorretonSamuel Le BihanBernard Le CoqThe war exploits of French captain Conan and his men during World War I and during the Allied intervention in the Russian Civil War.Another winner from French most prestigious director Bertrand Tavernier. Based on the real-life story of the almost Rambolike French captain during the end of WWI and including some uncharted historic movie territory with the European-Soviet war of 1919.
