- From 1923 when she played the lead in Louis Verneuil's "Ma cousine de Varsovie" to 1978 when she played again (and for the last time) "La Mamma", written specially for her by André Roussin, Elvire Popesco (born near Bucharest in 1894) was the undisputed queen of "Théâtre de Boulevard" (light comedies). For 55 years in a row, la Popesco was that ebullient and charming thick-accented foreigner who graced with her cheerful energy dozens of plays by such witty playwrights such as Louis Verneuil, Jacques Deval, Sacha Guitry, Henri Bernstein, André Roussin, Marcel Achard and many others. She seldom ventured into "serious" territory but Jean Cocteau's "La machine infernale" and Frédéric Dard's "La dame de Chicago" are exceptions that help to back up Tristan Bernard's own definition of her personality: "Elvire Popesco is a glass of champagne with tears at the bottom". On the big screen she played the same type of characters as on stage, Burel's incendiary cousin in Carmine Gallone's Ma cousine de Varsovie (1931), the filmed adaptation of her first triumph in Paris; the fiery duchess of Maulévrier in Roger Richebé's hilarious L'habit vert (1937); the boisterous actress Verotchka in Fernand Rivers's La présidente (1938); the cosmopolitan adventuress in Le club des aristocrates (1937)... Even when she appeared in a famous thriller like René Clément's Purple Noon (1960), she was her usual eccentric foreigner self. Though when she was still a young Romananian thespian her dream was to become a great tragedian, she soon realized that if she wanted to succeed in France her accent was a terrible handicap. She made people laugh and she proved wise enough to accept it for a fact. She was wonderful as a result instead of... ridiculous.1940 Paradis perdu d'Abel Gance

Diminutive, fiery-tempered Simone Simon was born in France, but spent much of her early childhood in Madagascar, where her father managed a graphite mine. Her schooling was somewhat unsettled, her family moving from city to city (Berlin, Budapest, Turin) before finally establishing themselves in Paris in 1930. Simone started as a dress designer, fashion model and occasional performer in stage musicals. She eventually met the director Marc Allégret, who took her under his wing. Her film debut was in 1931 and she had her first major hit as Jean Gabin's co-star in La Bête Humaine (1938), directed by Jean Renoir.
There were two halves to Simone's history in Hollywood. In 1936, Darryl F. Zanuck signed her to a contract at 20th Century Fox on the strength of a picture she had made two years earlier, Allegret's Ladies Lake (1934). She was launched with an expensive publicity campaign which accentuated her continental allure, particularly, her 'sexy pout'. During her tenure, problems surfaced regarding her command of English and also her limited singing skills. Dissatisfied with the roles she was given, Simone returned to France and 'La Bete Humaine'. She made a second attempt at Hollywood, acting in William Dieterle's The Devil and Daniel Webster (1941) as Belle, the devil's handmaiden. The New York Times review of October 17 considered her 'completely out of key'. Simone's best work, however, was to come in the shape of the cult horror classic Cat People (1942). Producer Val Lewton and director Jacques Tourneur used her triangular-faced feline qualities to best effect in the story of a girl who obsesses about an ancient Balkan curse turning her into a panther. The film was stylish and subtle, creating imagined rather than actual menace. Simone's performance was commensurate with perfectly studied cat-like mannerisms. During the production of 'Cat People', Simone was under FBI surveillance because of her relationship with MI5 spy Dusko Popov. She made two further, less successful, films at RKO, then returned to France for good. Simone made several films there and worked on the stage. In spite of many affairs and relationships, she never married.1940 Cavalcade d'amour de Raymond Bernard- Actress

Betty Stockfeld was born on 15 January 1905 in Sydney, Australia. She was an actress, known for 77 Park Lane (1931), Farewell to Love (1931) and Arènes joyeuses (1935). She was married to Aubrey St. John Edwards. She died on 27 January 1966 in Tadworth, Surrey, England, UK.1940 Le président Haudecoeur de Jean Dréville- Sylvia Bataille was an acclaimed French actress, who in 1939 won Le prix Suzanne-Bianchetti, given to France's most promising actress - other winners include the great actresses Audrey Tatou, Isabelle Adjani, Geneviève Bujold, Isabelle Huppert, Simone Signoret. Bataille acted in Renoir's Crime of Monsieur Lange, and A Day in the Country.
Her first husband was the troubled, philosophical novelist Georges Bataille (Ma mere, Story of the Eye - both filmed 2004). The Batailles' daughter Laurence (1930-1986) became a psychiatrist and acted in Renoir's movie French Cancan. Sylvia left Georges for Jacques Lacan (1901-1981) an influential and controversial French psychoanalyst. After Sylvia's early retirement from acting, she worked closely with Lacan. Both Georges and Lacan were influenced by surrealists, including Spanish painter Salvador Dali, inspiring Lacan to devise a unique synthesis of psychiatry and Surrealism. With Lacan, Sylvia also had a daughter, the philosopher Judith Miller (born 1941). Sylvia eventually married Lacan (1953). Judith married the philosopher/psychoanalyst Jacques-Alain Miller.
In the 1930's, Sylvia was a member of the great screenwriter Jacques Prevert's (Children of Paradise, Port of Shadows) agit-prop theatre company, Le groupe Octobre.
For 38 years Sylvia owned Gustave Corbet's still-controversial painting The Origin of the World. After her death, the French government received the painting to pay inheritance tax. Sylvia's sister Rose Makles married painter André Masson, who made a surrealist companion piece to The Origin of the World, which was attached to the Corbet canvas. Masson was a major influence on American abstract expressionists. Sylvia's other sister Simone Makles married the French government minister Jean Piel, who wrote and edited with Sylvia's ex-husband Georges Bataille.1941 L'enfer des anges de Christian-Jaque - Blanchette Brunoy was born on 5 October 1915 in Paris, France. Prototype of the sexy cheeky French lady, Suzy Delair was discovered by Henri-Georges Clouzot, who became her companion and gave her two memorable roles : Mila Malou, inspector Wens' unbearable girlfriend in two films, Le dernier des six (1941), which he wrote, and The Murderer Lives at Number 21 (1942), which he penned and directed; and the mythical one of Jenny Lamour, a frivolous music-hall singer prepared to do anything to become famous who makes her poor husband insanely jealous in Jenny Lamour (1947). The rest of her filmography is rather disappointing, with a few exceptions such as Jean Grémillon's White Paws (1949) , where she is -once again - an unfaithful companion ; Gervaise (1956), René Clément's masterpiece as Gervaise's obnoxious rival or Luchino Visconti's Rocco and His Brothers (1960), another cinema milestone, even if her part in this film is minor. An excellent singer (Who has forgotten "Avec son tra la la"?), delightful in operettas, Suzy Delair could hardly choose between her two careers. This may be the reason why she missed out on more great roles than she finally interpreted. Nevertheless, Mila Malou and Jenny Lamour are now part of the French film heritage. Not everybody can boast having left such an imprint on several generations of movie-goers.1941 Le dernier des six de Georges Lacombe- Jacqueline Delubac was born on 27 May 1907 in Lyon, Rhône, France. She was an actress, known for Let's Make a Dream (1936), The Pearls of the Crown (1937) and The New Testament (1936). She was married to Myran Eknayan and Sacha Guitry. She died on 12 June 1988 in Clichy-la-Garenne, Hauts-de-Seine, France.1942 Boléro de Jean Boyer- Brunette, exotic Lucienne Marie Marchal overcame her affliction with shyness by enrolling in, and ultimately winning, a beauty contest. One of the judges was the director Léonce Perret, who promptly helped her get her first role in motion pictures. After that, her face was sufficient to keep her in constant demand for both leading and supporting roles in Hollywood silent films (with MGM and Paramount), as well as in French and German-speaking productions. She hit her highs in such popular fare as Madame Sans-Gêne (1925) (as Napoleon Bonaparte's sister), Diplomacy (1926) (as rival to Blanche Sweet) and Blonde or Brunette (1927) (as the 'brunette' love interest to Adolphe Menjou). Arlette was not just a pretty face, however, as American critics consistently rated her performances from at least 'satisfactory', to 'excellent'. Back on the European continent from 1928, she had a few more successes before appearances in front of the camera became more widely spaced. By 1951, she had given up acting and concentrated on running her chain of fashion houses in France.1942 La loi du Nord de Jacques Feyder

Born in Caracas, young Elena (later to become Héléna) miraculously survived an earthquake there. She found a new home at an uncle's in New York City first, and later at another relative's in La Chaux de Fonds, Switzerland. A very early theater enthusiast, Manson trained as an actress at the Conservatoire de Genève. She was soon hired by the prestigious Pitoëff company and appeared as the ingénue in the famous French-speaking production of Pirandello's "Six Personnages en Quête d'Auteur". Among her numerous plays, let's quote "La Tournée des Aveux" (as the 23-year-old spinster) by the side of Louis Jouvet, "Romeo et Juliette (playing Lady Capulet) in 1937 and, more recently, "L'infâme" with Roger Planchon (in which she was the mother of the monstrous curé d'Uruffe). On the other hand she gave a poetry recital in several Swiss towns titled "De Villon à nos Jours". On the screen, big or small, she appeared more than a hundred times and performed dubbing in hosts of French versions of foreign movies. - Born in 1908, Suzet Maïs was active as an actress in the theater, in the movies and later on television from the late 1920s to 1966, the year of her last appearance in the TV series, 'Mésentente Cordiale'.
On the boards, she can boast a rich career with roles in plays by Molière, Tristan Bernard, Jean Giraudoux, Armand Salacrou, Oscar Wilde, Christopher Fry, Clare Booth, etc.
On the big screen , she participated in fewer important works, although she did work for directors such as Pierre Chenal, André Cayatte, Christian-Jaque or Claude Autant-Lara. In fact, whether or not the film she was in was memorable is not the point since the memorable thing in it, among others of the same temperament, was her. Not on account of her beauty. She was appealing: with a fine silhouette, a smooth and harmonious face and full, sensual lips reminiscent of Ginette Leclerc, she was more than just presentable. No, what really set her apart was her talent for playing the mean ladies, whether scheming or simply haughty, Preferably socialites. Her character might be charming but in this case her partner(s) had better beware the rattlesnake lurking in her. A haughty, icy gaze and all of a sudden she pounced on her prey and bit.
Remember how she treated poor André Berley in « Le Martyre de l'obèse », poor Blanchette Brunoy in « Claudine à l'école », poor Pierre Larquey (her father) in « Le Père Goriot », poor Micheline Presle in « Boule de Suif ».
Suzet Maïs was a real pest on the screen, but the kind of pest we love to hate.1945 Boule de suif de Christian-Jaque - Actress

Suzy Prim was born on 11 October 1896 in Paris, Ile-de-France, France. She was an actress and producer, known for Le cabaret du grand large (1946), Les anges noirs (1937) and Mayerling (1936). She died on 7 July 1991 in Boulogne-Billancourt, Hauts-de-Seine, France.1945 Untel Père et fils de Julien Duvivier- Madeleine Robinson grew up in a struggling working class background but found her métier as an actress after attending the theater school run by Charles Dullin, six years that she considered the happiest of her life. The stage would stay her main love even though she would lend her striking presence to over 100 roles in film and on Tv over six decades. She was particularly acclaimed in the theater for her Blanche in A Streetcar Named Desire (a role Arletty also played) and her ferocious Martha in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf. Sensitive to what she saw as unfair treatment by the French press and media she left her native country after 50 years and retired to Switzerland. She was still able to catch touring productions of plays there, but this way, she said in an interview, she was able to see only the worthwhile ones and not the mediocre ones she might have gone to were she still in Paris. She wrote a memoir on her career, Belle Et Rebelle. She regretted never having become a "star" in the sense that she was the woman the main male character would embrace in the fadeout, but she was grateful for the fellow actors she got to know and for getting to work with major directors like Jean Gremillon.1945 Sortilèges de Christian-Jaque
- Andrée Clément (b. 1918) lived like a shooting star. Her dark, mysterious cold beauty was unique; her face epitomized either sweet innocence and/or malign evil. An exceptionally talented actress, her career was cut short when she died of tuberculosis at the early age of 36. A student of Charles Dullin, she made her debut on stage in 1941 : she was to play in Molière's « Don Juan » and in Anouilh's « Adèle Ou la Marguerite » (1948). After minor roles, notably in Bresson's « Les Anges du Péché » and in Daquin's « Premier de Cordée », she got her breakout part in Decoin's « La Fille du Diable » (1945) in which she outshone such seasoned actors as Pierre Fresnay and Fernand Ledoux. Serge Reggiani was extremely impressed by his co-star's performance in « Coïncidences » (1946). In both movies, she was ideally cast as the outcast, the ill-fated girl who had a chip on her shoulder. Prestigious Michèle Morgan once said that « la Symphonie Pastorale » was Clément 's film, not hers. Other movies include « Dieu a besoin des Hommes », « Suivez cet Homme » and « Macadam ». Her death was certainly a major loss for the French cinema, particularly the film Noir.1946 Macadam de Marcel Blistène
- Renée Devillers was born on 9 October 1902 in Paris, France. She was an actress, known for The Immature Grain (1954), Therese (1962) and Le droit de l'enfant (1949). She died on 5 August 2000 in Lagny-sur-Marne, Seine-et-Marne, France.1946 Roger la honte d'André Cayatte

Lank and plain-looking, poker-faced and a bit starchy but looking all the more mysterious for that, Margo Lion will forever remain Jenny, the "brothel queen', in Pabst's adaptation of Bertold Brecht and Kurt Weill's immortal 'Dreigroschen Oper', singing their unforgettable song 'La fiancée du pirate'. A great film debut for this French actress born in Istanbul, who was then a successful cabaret performer in Berlin. And yet, although she was kept very busy working for the cinema and later on for television, Margo Lion never became an idol or a star or even a leading lady. On the other hand, she worked with talented directors (Carné, Chenal, Duvivier, Pabst as well as creators of the next generation such as Demy, Chabrol or Franju) and proved how versatile and talented a character actress she was. She could indeed play any type of role: a prostitute ('L'alibi') or a nun ('Le dialogue des carmélites'), a peevish maid ('La danse de mort') or a petty bourgeois ('L'affaire Lafarge'). If there was a common point between such varied characters, it was the elegant distance and the distinguished iciness she brought to the characters she embodied. A derelict woman played by Margo Lion was not a wreck but a lady who seemed to go through temporary trouble. Margo Lion is almost forgotten, which is a pity. She deserves better.1946 Martin Roumagnac de Georges Lacombe- Marguerite Moreno was born on 15 September 1871 in Paris, France. - In his sketches, popular French comedian'Fernand Raynaud' was often bullied by a self-righteous sharp-tongued spinster called Mademoiselle Lelongbec, the parish organist. Tall, lean and unattractive, Maximilenne (born Henriette Genty in 1884) seemed born to play the part and she WAS the obvious choice for director Robert Darène when, in 1958, he prepared to film a Fernand Raynaud's vehicle entitled "Houla Houla". Donning the attire of Mlle Lelongbec Maximilenne had the distinguished opportunity to nag poor Fernand, on the big screen this time around. A role that epitomizes a long screen career, spanning the three decades between the advent of the sound period and the birth of the French New Wave. During this time, she embodied innumerable female authority figures such as a mother superior ("La route enchantée"), a school mistress ("Simplet"), the headmistress of a reform school("Prison sans barreaux"), a Salvation Army general ("L'armoire volante") or a princess ("Le disque 1413"). She was rarely married in her films, most of the time she was the narrow-minded old maid. She was at her best as such in the role of one of the boarding house guests in Henri-Georges Clouzot's 1942 masterpiece "L'assassin habite au 21". And when she had indeed married in a movie, she was usually a widow: her late husband had chosen to leave life prematurely to escape her! Occasionally one of the old maids and aunts she was given to play were affectionate, notably in Fritz Lang's "Liliom " (1933). But whether her characters were good or bad, Maximilienne had been one of those colorful character actors and actresses the French cinema of the classic era could not do without. And she will be fondly remembered for that.1948 Clochemerle de Pierre Chenal
