- DirectorDavid FincherStarsBrad PittCate BlanchettTilda SwintonTells the story of Benjamin Button, a man who starts aging backwards with consequences.Awesome movie, I cried like a baby at the end. Lots of interesting life lessons and quotes. Sure to alienate some people, but I personally think this is a beautiful film.
- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsChristian BaleHeath LedgerAaron EckhartWhen the menace known as the Joker wreaks havoc and chaos on the people of Gotham, Batman must accept one of the greatest psychological and physical tests of his ability to fight injustice. The fanboys are still going crazy about this one...
- DirectorBen StillerStarsBen StillerJack BlackRobert Downey Jr.Through a series of freak occurrences, a group of actors shooting a big-budget war movie are forced to become the soldiers they are portraying.I had extremely low expectations for this movie, but it blew them out of the water. This movie is hilarious and full of great action scenes and quotes. Heartily recommended!
- DirectorClint EastwoodStarsClint EastwoodBee VangChristopher CarleyAfter a Hmong teenager tries to steal his prized 1972 Gran Torino, a disgruntled, prejudiced Korean War veteran seeks to redeem both the boy and himself.Sometimes it's unintentionally funny, but it's hard to deny that Clint can still kick ass.
- DirectorTomas AlfredsonStarsKåre HedebrantLina LeanderssonPer RagnarOskar, an overlooked and bullied boy, finds love and revenge through Eli, a beautiful but peculiar girl.I don't typically like vampire movies, but this one is an exception. It is a well-made horror film with a lot of thought-provoking ideas in play. However, most importantly, at the center of it all is a simple story of friendship between a boy and girl. Awww...
- DirectorJon FavreauStarsRobert Downey Jr.Gwyneth PaltrowTerrence HowardAfter being held captive in an Afghan cave, billionaire engineer Tony Stark creates a unique weaponized suit of armor to fight evil. This one really surprised people when it came out, most outside the comic nerds hadn't even heard of Iron Man before.
- DirectorMatt ReevesStarsMike VogelJessica LucasLizzy CaplanA group of friends venture deep into the streets of New York on a rescue mission during a rampaging monster attack.Say what you will about the handheld camera genre, but Cloverfield uses it to its full potential.
- DirectorGuillermo del ToroStarsRon PerlmanSelma BlairDoug JonesA prince of the mythical world starts a rebellion against humanity in order to rule the Earth. Hellboy and his team must fight to stop him from locating the all-powerful Golden Army.Hellboy II's narrative focus can be a bit scattershot at times, but it more than makes up for it by being wildly imaginative and a hell of a fun time.
- DirectorJason EisenerStarsJonathan TorrensSarah DunsworthMaris MorganChristmas trees ripped out of their forest plan revenge against people enjoying the holidays.Holy *beep* Jason Eisener is one *beep* up dude. Luckily he makes hilariously screwed up retro-horror-comedies like this one. Well worth tracking down with a simple Google search!
- DirectorPascal LaugierStarsMorjana AlaouiMylène JampanoïCatherine BéginA young woman's quest for revenge against the people who kidnapped and tormented her as a child leads her and a friend, who is also a victim of child abuse, on a terrifying journey into a living hell of depravity.Artfully made, but an absolutely miserable experience from start to finish, Martyrs is one of those movies that sticks with you. Martyrs shows up many of its torture porn contemporaries, demonstrating that you can have near-constant suffering through its runtime, but still deliver an interesting message about surviving through abuse and finding purpose in the face of unimaginable sorrow.
- DirectorEd HarrisStarsEd HarrisViggo MortensenRenée ZellwegerTwo friends hired to police a small town that is suffering under the rule of a rancher find their job complicated by the arrival of a young widow. The first half is very good, but it begins to drag in the second half, which hurt my overall opinion of the movie.
- DirectorTimur BekmambetovStarsAngelina JolieJames McAvoyMorgan FreemanA frustrated office worker discovers that he is the son of a professional assassin, and that he shares his father's superhuman killing abilities. An immensely entertaining, stylish, over-the-top action fest.
- DirectorSteven SoderberghStarsJulia OrmondBenicio Del ToroOscar IsaacIn 1956, Ernesto 'Che' Guevara and a band of Castro-led Cuban exiles mobilize an army to topple the regime of dictator Fulgencio Batista. An interesting look into the Cuban Revolution and the iconic revolutionary. I'm sure that one could enjoy this easily, politics aside.
- DirectorEdward ZwickStarsDaniel CraigLiev SchreiberJamie BellJewish brothers in German-occupied Eastern Europe escape into a Belorussian forest, where they join Russian resistance fighters, and endeavor to build a village, in order to protect themselves and about one thousand Jewish non-combatants.An enjoyably different war drama.
- DirectorGreg McLeanStarsMichael VartanRadha MitchellSam WorthingtonAn American journalist on assignment in the Australian outback encounters a man-eating crocodile while trapped on a rapidly flooding mud island.A deceptively great monster horror flick. Seriously, who looked at the cover for this and said "this is going to legitimately rock"? Lots of broken tropes here, you're going to be second-guessing everything that happens.
- DirectorSylvester StalloneStarsSylvester StalloneJulie BenzMatthew MarsdenIn Thailand, John Rambo joins a group of mercenaries to venture into war-torn Burma, and rescue a group of Christian aid workers who were kidnapped by the ruthless local infantry unit.Easily the most violent movie I've ever seen (and I've seen some pretty violent films).
- DirectorKevin SmithStarsSeth RogenElizabeth BanksCraig RobinsonLifelong platonic friends Zack and Miri look to solve their respective cash-flow problems by making an adult film together. As the cameras roll, however, the duo begin to sense that they may have more feelings for each other than they previously thought.Aside from the raunchy humour, this is basically just a standard romantic comedy. That said, Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks absolutely carry it by themselves and make it quite enjoyable and funny.
- DirectorPeter SegalStarsSteve CarellAnne HathawayAlan ArkinMaxwell Smart, a highly intellectual but bumbling spy working for the CONTROL agency, is tasked with preventing a terrorist attack from rival spy agency KAOS.I was surprised by how funny and enjoyable this was. Not as good as the TV show of course, but it is a good spoof of modern spy films.
- DirectorPeter CattaneoStarsRainn WilsonJosh GadChristina ApplegateIn the 1980s, a drummer is abandoned by his band just before they become rock superstars. Twenty years later, the drummer sees his second chance at stardom arise when he is asked to perform with his teenage nephew's high school rock band.Another surprise comedy, I never expected this to be any good.
- DirectorPete TravisStarsDennis QuaidForest WhitakerMatthew FoxThe attempted assassination of the American President is told and re-told from several different perspectives.Makes good use of its premise, even if it is repetitive.
- DirectorMarc ForsterStarsDaniel CraigOlga KurylenkoMathieu AmalricJames Bond descends into mystery as he tries to stop a mysterious organisation from eliminating a country's most valuable resource. One of the weaker Bond films, but the middle section of the film is pretty good.
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsHarrison FordCate BlanchettShia LaBeoufIndiana Jones becomes entangled in a Soviet plot to uncover the secret behind mysterious artifacts known as the Crystal Skulls.I'm gonna get flak for this but I didn't hate this movie. In fact, I like it more than The Temple of Doom, if only because I didn't have to listen to Willie Scott scream for half the movie. Yes, the fridge scene is moronic, yes Mutt swinging with the monkeys is stupid and yes the script is pretty weak. But no, I don't see why everyone, literally EVERYONE, loathed the aliens...
- DirectorMakoto KamiyaStarsPaul MercierAlyson CourtLaura BaileyLeon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield must battle a rogue warrior seeking revenge after unleashing the deadly G-Virus, whilst a mutated monster goes on a rampage.Easily the best Resident Evil movie out there.
- DirectorLouis LeterrierStarsEdward NortonLiv TylerTim RothBruce Banner, a scientist on the run from the U.S. Government, must find a cure for the monster he turns into whenever he loses his temper. In terms of overall quality, this is better than the previous Hulk film, but it's not a particularly great movie in its own regard. Everyone puts in a flat performance at best (even the normally good Edward Norton, and Liv Tyler was the worst of the bunch). Luckily the HULK SMASH action is good, but it's definitely a case of leave your brain at the door cinema.
- DirectorDavid Gordon GreenStarsSeth RogenJames FrancoGary ColeA process server and his marijuana dealer wind up on the run from hitmen and a corrupt police officer after he witnesses his dealer's boss murder a competitor while trying to serve papers on him.As you can probably imagine, Pineapple Express is quite stupid (intentionally), but it is also quite funny and rather heartfelt. Even if you don't love stoner comedies (and I actually don't particularly like them), you might find something to enjoy here.
- DirectorRobert LuketicStarsJim SturgessKate BosworthKevin SpaceyInspired by real events and people, 21 is about six MIT students who become trained to be experts in card counting in Black Jack and subsequently took Vegas casinos for millions in winnings. An interesting movie (although, to be honest, I can't say I understood card counting at all). It's better than I've heard it was, but it starts to get bad towards the latter-end of the movie.
- DirectorMichael McGowanStarsJoshua JacksonPeter SpenceMarc StrangeChronicles the motorcycle trip of Ben Tyler as he rides from Toronto to Tofino, British Columbia. Ben stops at landmarks that are both iconic and idiosyncratic on his quest to find meaning in his life.A humorous little Canadian production. Painfully cliche, but well-made none-the-less.
- DirectorRobby HensonStarsReynaldo RosalesHeidi DippoldMichael MadsenIn rural Alabama, two couples find themselves in a fight for survival. Running from a maniac (The Tin Man) bent on killing them, they flee deep into the woods and seek refuge in a house. As far as Christian movies go, this one is actually not too bad... until the end, when they feth things up so badly that I literally removed a whole star and a half from my score. Also, those who haven't read the book will probably be baffled as to what's happening.
- DirectorPaul GrossStarsPaul GrossMichael GreyeyesJames KotThe lives of a troubled veteran, his nurse girlfriend and a naive boy intersect first in Alberta and then in Belgium during the bloody World War I battle of Passchendaele. The battle sequences are amazing, but the film puts too much emphasis on the weak romance. Everyone expected this movie to be about the battle of Passchendaele, so this is very disappointing. This is around the point in the list when the movies start getting bad.
- DirectorAndrew AdamsonStarsBen BarnesSkandar KeynesGeorgie HenleyThe Pevensie siblings return to Narnia, where they are enlisted to once again help ward off an evil king and restore the rightful heir to the land's throne, Prince Caspian.I really liked the first Narnia movie, but this one really fell flat. I'm not entirely sure why either, although the loss of a central villain would likely be one of the main reasons.
- DirectorRob CohenStarsBrendan FraserJet LiMaria BelloIn the Far East, Alex O'Connell, the son of famed mummy fighters Rick and Evy O'Connell, unearths the mummy of the first Emperor of Qin -- a shape-shifting entity cursed by a witch centuries ago.Honestly, this series should never have gotten to a third movie, all the Mummy remakes sucked.
- DirectorPeter BergStarsWill SmithCharlize TheronJason BatemanHancock is a superhero whose ill-considered behavior regularly causes damage in the millions. He changes when the person he saves helps him improve his public image.Disappointingly bad.
- DirectorCarter SmithStarsShawn AshmoreJena MaloneJonathan TuckerA leisurely Mexican holiday takes a turn for the worse when a group of friends and a fellow tourist embark on a remote archaeological dig in the jungle, where something evil lives among the ruins.Certainly not the worst movie about killer plants which came out this year, The Ruins mainly suffers from being... boring. It's only an hour and a half in length, and sure there's a lot of rather brutal violence, but most of it feels like a total slog. It's not terrible, but is definitely marred by poor execution.
- DirectorLexi AlexanderStarsRay StevensonDominic WestJulie BenzFrank Castle, known as the Punisher, ruthlessly demolishes organized crime, but it starts an even bigger war.Punisher: War Zone is a mess of a movie, one you can just tell from watching it was hacked apart in the editing room, which really hurts the pacing and makes the action scenes incoherent. It's also kinda fucked up how much the movie wants to make us believe that Frank Castle is a hero by the end, to the point where even the woman he's widowed doesn't think it's a big deal that he's going on indiscriminate murder sprees that result in collateral damage every once in a while. That said, this movie is just too cartoonishly brutal and Dominic West's hammy performance as Jigsaw is too fun to not be at least entertained by this movie and I really appreciate how much it leans into its comic book origins.
- DirectorPeyton ReedStarsJim CarreyZooey DeschanelBradley CooperA man challenges himself to say "yes" to everything.Bleh, not that funny and why the hell would you say "yes" to literally everything? I think it's supposed to be profound, but it fails.
- DirectorAdam ShankmanStarsAdam SandlerKeri RussellCourteney CoxA hotel handyman's life changes when the lavish bedtime stories he tells his niece and nephew start to magically come true.Puke. This movie was really, really stupid.
- DirectorCraig MazinStarsDrake BellLeslie NielsenSara PaxtonOrphaned high school student Rick Riker is bitten by a radioactive dragonfly, develops super powers (except for the ability to fly), and becomes a hero.As far as the ____ Movies go, this one isn't awful... but it's still far from "good".
- DirectorNathan FrankowskiStarsBen SteinLili AsvarPeter AtkinsBen Stein examines the issue of academic freedom and decides that there is none when it comes to the debate over intelligent design.I enjoyed this a little more than Religulous, if only because Ben Stein is marginally less infuriating than Bill Maher. As for the content... well, it's very hit-or-miss (or, as my friend likes to put it, it's a load of intelligent design propaganda BS).
- DirectorCatherine HardwickeStarsKristen StewartRobert PattinsonBilly BurkeWhen Bella Swan moves to a small town in the Pacific Northwest, she falls in love with Edward Cullen, a mysterious classmate who reveals himself to be a 108-year-old vampire. There isn't much about this one that hasn't been said already, so I'll let it speak for itself...
- DirectorChuck PattonCurt GedaVinton HeuckStarsNika FuttermanKeith SzarabajkaJim CummingsA team of miners at an outpost in deep space unearth an ancient alien artefact. After the relic is brought aboard their spaceship, the USG Ishimura, for scientific study, an alien species begins to infect the members of the ship.I like Dead Space, but this is just a bad movie. While it does give a bit of insight into the Aegis 7 incident, this interesting background is obviously just used as a vehicle for the animators to kill people in increasingly gory ways. On top of that, the animation is really choppy as well.
- DirectorNeil MarshallStarsRhona MitraBob HoskinsAlexander SiddigA futuristic action thriller where a team of people work to prevent a disaster threatening the future of the human race.Ugh, Neil Marshall, how could you? Dog Soldiers and The Descent are amazing films, and then when you get a budget, you go and make this?
- DirectorM. Night ShyamalanStarsMark WahlbergZooey DeschanelJohn LeguizamoA science teacher, his wife, and a young girl struggle to survive a plague that causes those infected to commit suicide.-Sigh- M. Night Shyamalan, what happened to you?
- DirectorLarry CharlesStarsBill MaherTal BachmanJonathan BouldenBill Maher's take on the current state of world religion.Crap. Full of poor research, deceptive editing and a dearth of laughs. To make things even worse, it stars the face-punchingly smug Bill Maher, and has one of the most ridiculously illogical, non-sequitur endings I've ever seen in a documentary.
- DirectorJohn MooreStarsMark WahlbergMila KunisBeau BridgesComing together to solve a series of murders in New York City are a police detective and an assassin, who will be hunted by the police, the mob, and a ruthless corporation.Max Payne is a disjointed mess. While you could trash the acting, the script, editing, etc, the movie's biggest sin is that it's just plain dull. The only real nice thing you can say about it is that the cinematography is very pretty, but you know what they say about putting makeup on a pig...
- DirectorDouglas JacksonStarsNicholle TomGwynyth WalshCameron DaddoA lonely woman sabotages any relationship that her daughter tries to maintain.I saw this on TV, and it saw SO hilariously melodramatic and over the top that it has to be seen to be believed.
- DirectorUwe BollStarsTil SchweigerEmmanuelle VaugierNatalia AvelonAn ex-special forces soldier turned boatman is hired by a journalist to investigate a top-secret military base on a nearby island. My first Uwe Boll experience, and boy did it live up to expectations... that is, it was bafflingly stupid.
- DirectorDavid HacklStarsScott PattersonCostas MandylorTobin BellFollowing Jigsaw's grisly demise, Mark Hoffman is commended as a hero, but Agent Strahm is suspicious, and delves into Hoffman's past. Meanwhile, another group of people are put through a series of gruesome tests.Pointless, and disgusting. At least previous Saw movies were interesting, this one is lost.
- DirectorUwe BollStarsZack WardDavid FoleyVerne TroyerIn the ironically named city of Paradise, a loser teams up with his cult-leading uncle to steal a peculiar bounty of riches from their local amusement park. The recently arrived Taliban have a similar focus, but a far more sinister intent. This movie is totally tasteless and a terrible excuse for satire (need pointers for shock-satire that works Uwe? Try "Team America"). However, despite my better judgment, I did find myself laughing occasionally. There are some good jokes (particularly Uwe's cameo and many of the al Queda sequences), but most of them fall flat and the movie lacks any form of subtlety whatsoever.
- DirectorKevin GendreauStarsJamie Elle MannBrian KrauseTohoru MasamuneDuring WWII, a pilot and her crew carry a small group of American soldiers and an unknown cargo. However they get caught in a storm and they are forced to land in what is thought to be enemy territory. But the small island they land on holds more than men with guns. Not *quite* as bad as you'd expect, but it's still a totally brain-dead sci-fi original.
- DirectorPaul ZillerStarsBrian KrauseNiall MatterDon S. DavisA rash of suspiciously gruesome murders in a sleepy lakeside town has authorities stumped. They soon realize the culprit is not only connected to the lake, but in it. They must figure out what it is and how to stop it before it's too late.Hilariously stupid sci-fi monster movie fun.
- DirectorJean de SegonzacStarsJames BrolinIan SomerhalderBettina ZimmermannThe year is 2048, and global warming has flooded much of Earth's land areas. A father and his two sons try to salvage treasures from sunken buildings when they are given an important assignment by the New Vatican.Incredibly cheap movie full of hilariously bad acting, plot and effects. The McGuffin is literally a staff made of plastic. Funny, but painfully so.
