Director: Sutton Roley | Stars: Jackie Cooper, Alex Cord, Richard Jaeckel, Bradford Dillman

Votes: 968

Chosen Survivors (1974) is not a great movie, but it is a good movie and certainly the finest of the mediocre lot of movies that make up the "killer bat" genre.

A small group of people are put down in an underground bunker in order to repopulate the human race after a nuclear disaster. They didn't anticipate they'd have neighbors.

2. Nightwing (1979)

PG | 105 min | Horror

Killer bats plague an Indian reservation in New Mexico.

Director: Arthur Hiller | Stars: Nick Mancuso, David Warner, Kathryn Harrold, Stephen Macht

Votes: 1,731

A bit slow and could never be considered action-packed. However, the acting is good (Nick Mancuso, David Warner) and the story isn't as hackneyed as the typical "killer bat" fare. Based on a novel by Martin Cruz Smith.

3. Fangs (2002)

PG-13 | 94 min | Comedy, Horror, Sci-Fi

It's the attack of the genetically-altered killer bats.

Director: Kelly Sandefur | Stars: Corbin Bernsen, Tracy Nelson, Whip Hubley, Katie Stuart

Votes: 794

FANGS doesn't take itself too seriously and Corbin Bernsen makes anything watchable. It plays more for laughs than it does horror. There's a bit of mystery involved that comes off a little like a Scooby-Doo episode.

4. Bats (1999)

PG-13 | 91 min | Horror, Sci-Fi, Thriller

23 Metascore

Genetically mutated bats escape and it's up to a bat expert and the local sheriff to stop them.

Director: Louis Morneau | Stars: Lou Diamond Phillips, Dina Meyer, Bob Gunton, Leon

Votes: 11,442 | Gross: $10.16M

Genetically-enhanced bats wreak havoc on a small Texas town. The plot's not really any more complex than that. It does occasionally fall into silliness. Acting is passable and CGI effects are okay. Tanked in theaters in 1999.

5. The Roost (2005)

TV-14 | 80 min | Horror, Thriller

62 Metascore

"The Roost" is a 2005 movie where four friends marooned on a mysterious farm en route to a wedding are terrorized by various creatures and zombies.

Director: Ti West | Stars: Tom Noonan, Karl Jacob, Vanessa Horneff, Sean Reid

Votes: 2,238

It's unique in that it's half "killer bat" movie and half zombie movie. Really the only bat movie that truly reaches for scares (and hits a couple of times). It takes a long time to get going and when it does it only seems mildly worth it.

To make it worse, it's plagued by very poor audio which makes for a very difficult viewing.

6. The Devil Bat (1940)

Approved | 68 min | Horror, Sci-Fi

A mad scientist develops an aftershave lotion that causes his gigantic bats to kill anyone who wears it.

Director: Jean Yarbrough | Stars: Bela Lugosi, Suzanne Kaaren, Dave O'Brien, Guy Usher

Votes: 3,446

Bela Lugosi is the only thing interesting about this movie. What's fun is listening to the giant bat swoop down and emit its monkey/banshee scream as it attacks.

7. Bats: Human Harvest (2007 TV Movie)

R | 87 min | Action, Adventure, Horror

After eight years since the events of the first film, a scientist has designed a new species of bat genetically designed to be biological weapons in a confrontation between Chechen and Americans.

Director: Jamie Dixon | Stars: David Chokachi, Michael Jace, Pollyanna McIntosh, Martin Papazian

Votes: 1,029

Straight to TV (Sci-Fi Original Movie) sequel to the first box office bomb, BATS. Big on action and gunfights, but still terrible on just about all levels. The budget was far too low for the aspirations of the script. CGI is not convincing.

8. Vampire Bats (2005 TV Movie)

Not Rated | 90 min | Action, Adventure, Horror

Freshmen friends of the Tate University go to an underground party in the woods nearby the local cemetery. After a death, two of the students are arrested until a professor suggests that bats might be the real culprit.

Director: Eric Bross | Stars: Lucy Lawless, Dylan Neal, Liam Waite, Timothy Bottoms

Votes: 1,463

Lucy Lawless reprises her role as Dr. Maddy Rierdon from the movie LOCUSTS. Lawless does her best but the whole movie is just a wet noodle. It tries too hard to be "young" and "hip" with its use of college kids. Nothing new and nothing very interesting.
