MyMovies: AYAOTDSeason7
When I started Season 7 I thought that it would be just as poor as Season 6, but, as I worked my way through the episodes, I realized that it was actually pretty good. Season 6 was nothing short of a disaster all around, setting the stage for my low expectations. The key improvement in Season 7 is in the writing. The stories are better paced and often take unexpected, satisfying turns. The opening Silver Sight three-parter ambitiously utilized the Midnight Society as its protagonists - a truly great idea. The narrative shifts and the return of Gary were quite daring and immensely successful. I was going to give Part 3 a **** rating until the final scene, which really doesn't make the slightest bit of sense and undermines the entire point of the story (please pm me if I missed the point). The revived series is still a step below any season from the original (although this season is close to Season 5), despite some overall improvements in execution. The key problem is that the episodes are never scary. Even one of the best, the Tale of Highway 13, worked not because of scares but because of the story, which brought itself to a meaningful, unexpected conclusion. The most notable miss was the Tale of the Lunar Locusts, which was amateurishly filmed and utterly unconvincing. The Tale of the Last Dance was a hokey, stupid Phantom of the Opera Ripoff. But besides those two the episodes were mostly tolerable. So it's an above average ending for a great show.
