- DirectorRobert AltmanStarsKeith CarradineKaren BlackRonee BlakleyOver the course of a few hectic days, numerous interrelated people prepare for a political convention.A wonderful film with twenty-four central characters that are joined together in a wonderful tapestry of music, politics, love affairs and the american spirit. I found the end surprisingly moving, as the effective comedy and melodrama of this film is in stark contrast to the tragic undertones that play out at its conclusion. Altman is certainly a wonderful auteur when it comes to this sort of movie, and by the end we are left wondering if we have seen everything in the lives of these characters, or nothing at all.
- DirectorPaul Thomas AndersonStarsJonny GreenwoodEhtisham Khan AjmeriNihal KhanMusician Jonny Greenwood travels to Rajasthan, where he performs with a multitude of Indian musicians. The meeting together of different cultures and religions is very affecting, and the music stirs the heart and brings a sense of wonder and awe to this documentary. You can almost feel the beat as if you are in the room with all of the wonderful musicians and singers. I swear I could almost smell the culture and breathe the atmosphere, it's so thick and inspiring.
- DirectorJean-Luc GodardStarsJean-Luc GodardYves BeneytonJuliet BertoA day in the life of a Parisian housewife/prostitute, interspersed with musings on the Vietnam War and other contemporary issues. The universe can be seen in a cup of black coffee, or at least that's the randomness of this film, and the thoughts and deep conversations that are at play here, right towards the camera, while the narrator gently whispers into your ear. A beautiful film that shouldn't work and its logic should be dispelled, or at the very least knocked off of its axis by the way the characters talk straight into the camera, but the genius of Godard allows for such things to be handled with aplomb.
- DirectorJean CocteauRené ClémentStarsJean MaraisJosette DayMila ParélyA beautiful young woman takes her father's place as the prisoner of a mysterious beast, who wishes to marry her.A wonderful, sleepy, stylish, creepy and surreal film by Jean Cocteau. For the time the effects are very good, including the beasts makeup, and the film itself is dreamlike. A classic film by a truly gifted director.
- DirectorEric BaudelaireStarsHigashibata KanokoGoto YasukaArakawa OsamuAn employee at a Japanese bookstore receives a package of photography books. She uses a scalpel and a brush to censor images which may be considered offensive or obscene. An interesting documentary showing a girl in a media shop going through books, censoring what she deems not fit for human eyes.
- CreatorBruno DumontStarsAlane DelhayeLucy CaronBernard PruvostA murder mystery that opens with the discovery of human body parts stuffed inside a cow on the outskirts of a small channel town in northern France.Good series, very quirky and strange, but I love how different it is to other similar crime series
- DirectorNatalie CristianiStarsNicola CostantinoNicola Costantino is one of the most controversial and admired artist of Latin America. The documentary follows the visual artist, from the first origins of her work until her participation at the last Venice Biennale 2013.Very interesting documentary about the daughter of a surgeon who, from a young age, saw her father's work which influenced her outlook on things. Very disturbing bit at the end with her killing a cow. Also she shows how she made soap using 3% of her own body fat that was removed using liposuction.
- DirectorPeter TscherkasskyA woman goes to bed, falls asleep, and begins to dream. This dream takes her to a landscape of light and shadow, evoked in a form only possible through classic cinematography.A hypnotic short film that perfectly captures the feel of a dream in its random images merged over each other, like conflicting ideas, memories and thoughts of a dream.
- DirectorHarry MacqueenStarsLori CampbellHarry MacqueenHarry Macqueen's debut film is a tender and honest exploration of love and change. When Harvey (Harry Macqueen) hears that his old friend Lola (Lori Campbell) is returning home after years abroad he arranges to take her away for the weekend to the sea-side cottage where they spent so much of their youth. What follows is a touching and beautiful story of an old friendship rekindled within a new context. Hinterland is a poetic journey of self-discovery and heartbreak in contemporary Britain, a very original and visually stunning road-trip film.A warm and affecting tale of friendship and unrequited love. I found this movie so enjoyable and it felt real. All in all a very nice debut from Harry Macqueen, and a great performance by Lori Campbell.
- DirectorFred ZinnemannStarsGary CooperGrace KellyThomas MitchellA town Marshal, despite the disagreements of his newlywed bride and the townspeople around him, must face a gang of deadly killers alone at "high noon" when the gang leader, an outlaw he "sent up" years ago, arrives on the noon train.A thrill ride where tension builds as they wait for a train to arrive that's carrying a man with a vendetta against the town sheriff, but who in town will help him?
- DirectorEskil VogtStarsEllen Dorrit PetersenHenrik RafaelsenVera VitaliForsaken in a new Oslo apartment, a frail blind woman battles to come to terms with her condition, as she slowly retracts into an elaborate fantasy bubble. Are her stories fanning her suspicions, or is this what total blindness looks like?A very direct and honest movie about the reality of blindness. It really made me think about what it would be like to suddenly go blind, and how different the world would feel in that reality. This movie is both poetic and realistic in its subject, and I would say can only increase one's empathy for those who cannot see the world they inhabit.
- DirectorJem CohenStarsMary Margaret O'HaraBobby SommerEla PiplitsWhen a Vienna museum guard befriends an enigmatic visitor, the grand Kunsthistorisches Art Museum becomes a mysterious crossroads that sparks explorations of their lives, the city, and the ways in which works of art reflect and shape the world.A strange, meditative, lucid and beguiling movie that seems to tug at the heartstrings from afar, yet somehow its study of both humanity and art, married with the simple yet strained lives of the two central characters, only ever manages to bring are emotions to simmer, rather than to the boil.
- DirectorYuan ZhangStarsBowen DongYuanyuan NingManyuan ChenA young boy starting school for the first time struggles to fit in to a strictly regimented society in in post-revolutionary China.
- DirectorEric BaudelaireStarsPhilippe AzouryIn 1967, following the success of BLOW UP, Michelangelo Antonioni planned to make a film in Japan. The project was cancelled, and Antonioni opted for the United States instead, where he shot ZABRISKIE POINT. In 1983, Antonioni published "That Bowling Alley on the Tiber," a compilation of notes and intentions for films that were never made, "narrative nuclei" that point towards a cinema that remains invisible after Antonioni's death in 2007. In the spirit of the Zen riddle about the sound of one hand clapping, artist and filmmaker Eric Baudelaire invents the notion of the "make" as a remake of a film that was never made, the ghost of a movie lurking behind a document attesting to its possibility. Adopting the format of a DVD bonus track, Baudelaire's 26 minute experimental film THE MAKES unfolds as a staged interview with Philippe Azoury, a well-known film critic for the French newspaper Liberation. In the course of this film, Antonioni's unrealized cinema finds a form through an assemblage of various materials that end up giving meaning to each other: story ideas from Antonioni's "That Bowling Alley on the Tiber," found film stills from various unrelated Japanese productions, a precise and surprisingly convincing critical discourse by Azoury, real life anecdotes and an ominous correspondence between Barthes and Antonioni. Exploring the notion of invisible cinema, this montage of unrelated material from the past creates a strangely concrete cinematic experience in the present.
