Wendy pays a visit to the Lazy-O Motel. Ruth and Wyatt make a plan.8.9
Tense throughout and building toward an explosive mid-season finale. This show is so well made - if a little laboured at points. - DirectorRobin WrightStarsJason BatemanLaura LinneySofia HublitzThe FBI's long-awaited meeting with Omar takes place. Wyatt shares some news with Ruth. Feeling betrayed, Javi gets aggressive.9.2
Still not quite on the level of the truly great TV shows but this was one hell of a tense episode. It wasn't as bold as I'd hoped/feared - but it has greatly setup the finale of the season later this year. - DirectorAmanda MarsalisStarsJason BatemanLaura LinneySofia HublitzDevastated by a tremendous loss, Ruth heads to Chicago to enact revenge as Marty tries to talk her out of doing something she might regret.9.0
Stylish and impressive, a will she won't she that may have just pulled the trigger on its only interesting thread. There's still a smidge of humanity left in Marty - I hope he can hold onto it. - DirectorAmanda MarsalisStarsJason BatemanLaura LinneySofia HublitzTheir deal with the FBI now dead, the Byrdes desperately search for more solutions to their growing problems. Wendy's father comes to town.8.4
The walls are closing around them, as ever one thing after another. It's feeling somewhat like an epilogue to the previous two episodes though... - DirectorMelissa HickeyStarsJason BatemanLaura LinneySofia HublitzMarty travels to the Navarro estate, Ruth asks Frank Jr. for a favour, a new acting sheriff makes waves and Wendy tries to bring Jim back into the fold.8.7
Running the cartel as a business is brilliant to watch - if a little far fetched. Him trying to teach his perspectives and highlighting inconsistencies in their books (I didn't think they were legit enough to even keep books) was awesome. Displays it so vividly that you can't be a pacifist in a violent world without sea change. - DirectorLaura LinneyStarsJason BatemanLaura LinneySofia HublitzRuth makes a play for the casino with some help from a familiar face. Wendy cozies up to Omar's sister and arranges a meeting with Clare.8.6
Marty finally snaps - give me more of that! - DirectorAmanda MarsalisStarsJason BatemanLaura LinneySofia HublitzNathan angers Wendy by making Charlotte and Jonah a surprising offer. Ruth tries to erase her own past with an assist from Charles Wilkes.8.4
Meandering - the only truly interesting thread is Ruth trying to get out. All moving too slow for a finale road. One loss after another for the Byrde's - and a tough one to take, never saw Wendy so broken, a step further than with her brother. That life is not enviable... - DirectorAmanda MarsalisStarsJason BatemanLaura LinneySofia HublitzOmar pressures Marty to launder more money, but Ruth wants to keep her casino clean. Wendy goes to extremes to keep her children.8.8
Almost parodying itself - yet the sharp, dark turn to make Wendy more unlikeable (and unpredictable) than ever is powerful. Marty knows she's went off the rails. Their kids are smarter than that, they're just becoming annoying now. Threats to Ruth's new life chasing her down - should she really get off clean? An intense sequence to end the ep - lot of good twists and turns here. - DirectorJason BatemanStarsJason BatemanLaura LinneySofia HublitzEvery desperate deal. Every broken promise. Every bloody murder. Eager to leave their murky past behind, the Byrdes make a final bid for freedom.☆ 9.5 ☆
A divisive - brilliant finale that is happy to upset its fanbase to stay true to its nihilistic worldview.
A truly dark descent for every central character - Wendy in particular who has went completely off the rails, but retains control under the surface. Marty is the most sobering to watch - as he realises there is nothing he can do this time to halt an inevitability set in motion by Ruth's choice to kill Javi. Ruth's death will be disappointing to many - but no one gets out clean, and Ozark's boldness to stick to that promise makes viewing all the more satisfying.
I've read that some see this finale as anticlimactic - it's anything but. It simply continues to exist after our viewing ends, refusing to forcibly give the Byrde family 'what's coming to them' or resolution to the destruction left in their wake. As it states itself, "the world doesn't work like that". What have they learned since the start? Nothing. And that's the point.
