- DirectorTobe HooperStarsMarilyn BurnsEdwin NealAllen DanzigerFive friends head out to rural Texas to visit the grave of a grandfather. On the way they stumble across what appears to be a deserted house, only to discover something sinister within. Something armed with a chainsaw.Throughout the hundreds of horror movies I've sat through, this is still my all-time favorite. From the opening narration (can you guess the voice?) to the grisly story line, it still holds up beautifully.
- DirectorStephen ChiodoStarsGrant CramerSuzanne SnyderJohn Allen NelsonAliens who look like clowns come from outer space and terrorize a small town.If you're looking for horror that can be watched with a group of friends, then this one is the bee's knees. An absurd plot line with great characters makes this my top choice for fun horror.
- DirectorFrank HenenlotterStarsKevin VanHentenryckTerri Susan SmithBeverly BonnerA young man carrying a big basket that contains his extremely deformed, formerly conjoined twin brother seeks vengeance on the doctors who separated them against their will.IMHO the sequels of this insane trilogy are far superior to the original (which drags a bit) but they are all amazingly bonkers crazy with gratuitous violence and bizarre humor.
- DirectorFritz KierschStarsPeter HortonLinda HamiltonR.G. ArmstrongA young couple is trapped in a remote town where a dangerous religious cult of children believes that everyone over age 18 must be killed. This is easily my favorite of the Stephen King horror adaptations. Kids are creepy enough to me, and when they go on killing sprees it gives me a full-blown panic attack. "Outlander!"
- DirectorJoe DanteStarsZach GalliganPhoebe CatesHoyt AxtonA young man inadvertently breaks three important rules concerning his new pet and unleashes a horde of malevolently mischievous monsters on a small town.Yes, everyone has seen it, so I'll spare you the description. But that doesn't mean it doesn't deserve its place high up on my list.
- DirectorTibor TakácsStarsStephen DorffChrista DentonLouis TrippKids left home alone accidentally unleash a horde of malevolent demons from a mysterious hole in their suburban backyard. This is one of those masterpieces that everyone remembers one scene from but it fails to get the recognition it deserves. It's more of a kid's film (no nudity, very little profanity) but it's entertaining enough to keep adults interested as well. Also, if anyone knows where I can find a Killer Dwarfs patch please don't hesitate to contact me.
- DirectorJames CameronStarsSigourney WeaverMichael BiehnCarrie HennDecades after surviving the Nostromo incident, Ellen Ripley is sent out to re-establish contact with a terraforming colony but finds herself battling the Alien Queen and her offspring.I will probably get a lot of flack for this, but this sequel was better than the original. There. I said it.
- DirectorTobe HooperStarsJoBeth WilliamsHeather O'RourkeCraig T. NelsonA family's home is haunted by a host of demonic ghosts. From the beautifully haunting score to the endearing characters, this is a wonderful flick that deserves to be on every Top Ten horror list. I enjoyed both sequels as well.
- DirectorDon CoscarelliStarsJames Le GrosReggie BannisterAngus ScrimmMike, now released from a psychiatric hospital, meets with Reggie, and discover his dreams (the events of the original film) are real, and they both journey to find and stop the evil Tall Man from his grim work.I LOVE this entire series but this one is my favorite. The humor is great but it still manages to retain that creepy feeling. Another reason why I love this series is because Reggie Bannister looks just like Clint Howard, and watching him struggle with acting makes you feel like you are rooting for the underdog in a strange way. He is easily one of my all-time favorite movie characters.
- DirectorFred DekkerStarsJason LivelyTom AtkinsSteve MarshallAlien brain parasites, entering humans through the mouth, turn their host into a killing zombie. Some teenagers start to fight against them.Such fine, cheesy goodness! This is rumored to be Tom Atkins’ favorite movie role (Detective Cameron) and for good reason. It has all the elements of a fine 80’s film rolled into one, with tons of great characters, amazing one-liners, a cameo by Dick Miller, and a premise is so bad it’s good!
- DirectorStuart GordonStarsJeffrey CombsBruce AbbottBarbara CramptonAfter an odd new medical student arrives on campus, a dedicated local and his girlfriend become involved in bizarre experiments centering around the re-animation of dead tissue. If you loved 'From Beyond' (which you should, because if not, shame on you) this is the hotter and smarter older brother. Instantly loveable characters mixed with a *beep* plot makes this an absolute must-see! (*Be warned there is a lot of nudity and a verrrrrry awkward rape scene.)
- DirectorJoel SchumacherStarsJason PatricCorey HaimDianne WiestAfter moving to a new town, two brothers discover that the area is a haven for vampires. This is easily my favorite of the vampire movies, and with such a great cast and great script it’s one of my favorite horror movies, period.
- DirectorTom HollandStarsChris SarandonWilliam RagsdaleAmanda Bearse"Fright Night" sees a teenager believing that the newcomer in his neighborhood is a vampire. He turns to an actor in a television hosted horror movie show for help to deal with the undead.Coming in just behind The Lost Boys, this is another amazing vampire movie and one of the better horror movies of the decade. It has great characters (I heart Stephen Geoffreys!), great special effects, and there are no slow points at all.
- DirectorJack BenderStarsJonelle AllenShari BelafonteLeVar BurtonPhil, Melissa, Mitch, Mary, and Vinnie are high school friends, who unwittingly raise the dead on Halloween night. Once the dead have returned, Pitchford Cove will never be the same again....or will it?This is, in my opinion, a perfect movie. It’s made for TV so there is no nudity, swearing, or severe violence, but it’s non-stop entertaining which makes it even more impressive. The cast is incredible, the story is fun, it centers around teens, and it reeks of wonderful 80’s fashion and design. This will be an annual must-watch for me.
- DirectorRon UnderwoodStarsKevin BaconFred WardFinn CarterNatives of a small isolated town defend themselves against strange underground creatures which are killing them one by one.I went into this movie expecting a snoozefest and luckily I was proven very wrong. There is a great amount of suspense coupled with great characters and an impressive set to boot.
- DirectorLamberto BavaStarsUrbano BarberiniNatasha HoveyKarl ZinnyA group of random people are invited to a screening of a mysterious movie, only to find themselves trapped in the theater with ravenous demons.I just happened upon this title on someone’s “Best Of” list and I am shocked that it’s not on everyone’s list. The characters are amazing, the dialogue is misogynistic and cheesy, and not only is there plenty of gore, it’s also non-stop action which is a rarity in this genre. I am so happy to enter this into my top twenty and hopefully you'll love it as well.
- DirectorPeter JacksonStarsTimothy BalmeDiana PeñalverElizabeth MoodyA young man's mother is bitten by a Sumatran rat-monkey. She gets sick and dies, at which time she comes back to life, killing and eating dogs, nurses, friends, and neighbors.Despite it dragging a bit at times, this is a must-see movie. It has great characters, very memorable scenes, countless amazing one-liners, and graces viewers with one of the most fantastic death scenes in any horror film out there.
- DirectorFrank HenenlotterStarsRick HearstGordon MacDonaldJennifer LowryOne morning, a young man wakes to find that a small, disgusting creature has attached itself to the base of his brain stem. The creature gives him a euphoric state of happiness but demands human victims in return. This movie is so disturbingly perfect in every way! Great characters, awesome special effects, and the most adorable parasite ever. Very reminiscent of Henenlotter’s Basket Case series with its love for gore and absurdity, and a bizarre sex scene that rivals the scene in Re-Animator.
- DirectorTobe HooperStarsDennis HopperCaroline WilliamsJim SiedowA radio host is victimized by the cannibal family as a former Texas marshal hunts them.I don’t even know how to explain this one. If you loved the first one you might hate this one, even though the first one is my all-time favorite and I still find this one almost as awesome in a completely different way. It’s a crazy plot with crazy characters, and the last half takes place in one of the most impressive sets ever designed. Watch this with a group and they will love you forever.
- DirectorJ. Michael MuroStarsMike LackeyBill ChepilVic NotoA liquor store owner sells alcoholic beverages to homeless people, unaware of what the bottles actually contain: toxic brew.I love this movie. When it started I thought “Oh this is going to be very low budget and very bad” but they did amazing things with that low budget, and it got better each second. It has such a ridiculous plot and ridiculous characters, and I realize it might not be for everyone but this was definitely right up my alley.
- DirectorDeborah BrockStarsCrystal BernardJennifer RhodesKimberly McArthurCourtney Bates, the younger sister of Valerie, and her friends go to a condo for a weekend getaway, but Courtney can't get rid of the haunting feeling that a supernatural rockabilly driller killer is coming to murder them all.I can’t even begin to explain how amazing this movie is. The first one was good as well, but nowhere near as beautifully insane as this one. It is such a hidden gem with one of the most bizarre killers and I am shocked it’s not on any “best of” lists.
- DirectorClaudio FragassoStarsMichael Paul StephensonGeorge HardyMargo PreyA vacationing family discovers that the entire town they're visiting is inhabited by goblins, disguised as humans, who plan to eat them. This is often dubbed "the king of bad horror movies" and for good reason. Terrible actors, terrible story line, and nary a Troll to be seen. The amount of quotable lines is impressive and afterwards you should grab a double-decker bologna sandwich and check out the documentary called "The Best Worst Movie."
- DirectorChuck RussellStarsHeather LangenkampRobert EnglundCraig WassonA psychiatrist familiar with knife-wielding dream demon Freddy Krueger helps teens at a mental hospital battle the killer who is invading their dreams.Maybe it’s because Dokken does the theme song, but this is my favorite of the series. A great cast and very creative murders make it very obvious why this franchise was so ahead of the others at this point.
- DirectorStuart GordonStarsJeffrey CombsBarbara CramptonJonathan FullerA man travels to Italy with his family to live in the castle they have recently inherited. But he soon begins to suspect that they are not the only occupants. This is my 345th movie added to this list and I just cannot believe it took me so long to see it. It’s not on any “best of” lists, and the only reason why I wanted to see it is because Jeffrey Combs and Barbara Crampton are in it. I should have known that Stuart Gordon adapting another H.P. Lovecraft story would be gold. It has everything you could want in a horror film: A great cast, a unique plot, and suspense that grabs you at the start and never lets go. I’m not fond of the ending scene and the violence becomes quite excessive, but this was wonderfully executed and will be very high on my list of recommendations.
- DirectorJim WynorskiStarsKelli MaroneyTony O'DellRussell ToddA group of young shopping mall employees stay behind for a late night party in one of the stores. When the mall goes on lock-down before they can get out, the robot security system malfunctions, and goes on a killing spree.Despite a lag during the second half I found the movie to be quite entertaining with great one-liners and an annoyingly fun cast. Plus, the Orwellian plotline is more poignant today than ever before. (Cameo by Dick Miller!)
- DirectorPhilip BrophyStarsGerard KennedyAndrew DaddoIan SmithResidents of peaceful Pebbles Court, Homesville, are being used unknowingly as test experiments for a new 'Body Drug' that causes rapid body decomposition (melting skin etc.) and painful death.Falling into the genre of “Ozploitation,” this splatter flick is about as fun as it gets. Filled to the brim with ridiculousness and chocked full of zany characters, it’s a film that is difficult to forget and an absolute must-see for fans of Dead Alive and Street Trash.
- DirectorAnthony HickoxStarsZach GalliganMonika SchnarreMartin KempIn this sequel, a couple must use a portal through time to defeat evil. This movie is...just...I don’t even...Wow. First off, it’s amazing. And not in an actual amazing way, but in a very very terrible way. The plotline is bonkers, the characters are beyond ridiculous, and the corny sound effects almost take it over the edge of being too much to stomach. But similar to the gel in the helmet scene in The Abyss, once you are acclimated to the new reality it suddenly becomes this fantastic journey that gets better with each new scene. Even the ending credits scene is beautifully out of whack. I’d say you don’t have to thank me for uncovering this gem because you won’t. You’re going to hate it and hate me for even bringing it to light.
- DirectorChuck RussellStarsShawnee SmithKevin DillonDonovan Leitch Jr.A deadly entity from space crash-lands near a small town and begins consuming everyone in its path. Panic ensues as shady government scientists try to contain the horrific creature. This is a much more serious film than I expected, but it’s really intense and entertaining all the way through. Plus, lots of gore if you’re into that sort of thing (which you should be).
- DirectorWes CravenStarsMichael MurphyMitch PileggiJohn TeshAfter being sent to the electric chair, a serial killer uses electricity to come back from the dead and carry out his vengeance on the football player who turned him in to the police. This is another film that I had low expectations for but it turned out to be very entertaining with a soundtrack that puts most horror movies to shame.
- DirectorGeorge A. RomeroStarsDavid EmgeKen ForeeScott H. ReinigerDuring an escalating zombie epidemic, two Philadelphia SWAT team members, a traffic reporter and his TV executive girlfriend seek refuge in a secluded shopping mall.I’ll be the first to admit I'm not a huge fan of zombie films, but this movie is incredible. Easily the best of the Romero films I've seen, and aside from the more modern Dead Snow movies it's my favorite zombie movie, period.
- DirectorFred Olen RayStarsGunnar HansenLinnea QuigleyJohn Henry RichardsonA detective embarks on a mission to track down a woman in L.A.'s seedy nightclubs, only to come face-to-face with a blood-thirsty cult of lethally beautiful prostitutes. Is he the next victim of Hollywood's demented Chainsaw Hookers?Yes, yes, and yes! This movie is amazing! Tons of gore, tons of nudity, the cheesiest one-liners, and Gunner f*ucking Hansen! Watch this with a group and your friends will love you for life!
- DirectorRussell MulcahyStarsGregory HarrisonArkie WhiteleyBill KerrAs a vicious wild boar terrorizes the Australian outback, the husband of one of the victims is joined by a hunter and a farmer in a search for the beast. When I heard that this movie was one of the best animal horror films I was skeptical, but wow. This is now THE go-to animal horror film for me. Not that it’s actually scary per se, but it’s filled with great characters, a fun plot, and quite possibly the best cinematography in any 80’s horror film, period. It’s absolutely incredible. I’m only deducting half a point for the lack of presence the animal actually has, but otherwise it’s a great way to spend 90 minutes.
- DirectorAmy Holden JonesStarsMichele MichaelsRobin StilleMichael VillellaA female high school student's slumber party turns into a bloodbath, as a newly escaped psychotic serial killer wielding a power drill prowls her neighborhood.I found this to be very entertaining from start to finish, and despite it being quite a breast fest it’s very refreshing to see a very feminist take on this genre.
- DirectorWilliam LustigStarsTom AtkinsBruce CampbellLaurene LandonA killer dressed in a police uniform begins murdering innocent people on the streets of New York City.I get that Ash may be his most beloved character, but this is still Bruce Campbell at his finest. It never stops being entertaining and is so well done that I can’t imagine it not being on anyone’s list of top 80’s horror films. The two sequels are fantastic as well!
- DirectorJohn CarpenterStarsRoddy PiperKeith DavidMeg FosterThey influence our decisions without us knowing it. They numb our senses without us feeling it. They control our lives without us realizing it. They live. This is one of the more creative movies out there. The characters are great (fantastic one-liners) and even though this would be considered more of an action movie than a horror movie it still fits into this genre just fine. Every hipster donning an OBEY shirt will appreciate where the idea originated.
- DirectorJohn LandisStarsDavid NaughtonJenny AgutterJoe BelcherTwo American college students on a walking tour of Britain are attacked by a werewolf that none of the locals will admit exists. This is such a unique film, and aside from the dark humor I’ve always loved the creepy, desolate ambience that can be felt throughout the entire movie.
- DirectorStuart GordonStarsJeffrey CombsBarbara CramptonTed SorelA group of scientists have developed the Resonator, a machine which allows whoever is within range to see beyond normal perceptible reality. But when the experiment succeeds, they are immediately attacked by terrible life forms. If you loved Re-Animator, then think of this movie as his little brother. It’s full of great characters, interesting creatures, and is based on an H.P. Lovecraft story so you know it’s going to get delightfully weird.
- DirectorTed NicolaouStarsDiane FranklinMary WoronovGerrit Graham"TerrorVision" is a 1986 horror / science fiction movie; telling the tale of when a family's new satellite television system starts receiving signals from another planet, and soon it becomes the passageway to an alien world.Cheesy, campy 80’s horror at its finest! A silly monster, a swinger’s den, and a child bonding with his grandpa...what more could you possibly need?! Definitely watch this with friends.
- DirectorJag MundhraStarsHy PykeGregory Scott CumminsKatina GarnerA kindly old grandfather is actually the leader of a murderous satanic cult which sacrifices its victims on Halloween. This is one of those hidden gems that I was in love with instantly. It has all of the elements of a great 80’s horror flick: fun characters, a rock band, a crazy dream sequence, random unnecessary nudity, and a satanic cult. This is the perfect film for watching in a group, although the amount of full nudity may be a bit off-putting for some. Oh, and rest assured, you are definitely going to hate it.
- DirectorTed NicolaouStarsRobert FactorMartha QuinnAaron LustigAn alien determined to capture human females takes over a radio station to do it.This movie is an absolute delight. It’s a mix between Terrorvision and Killer Klowns, and that, to me, is a perfect combination. Fun characters and a completely far-fetched ridiculous plot combined with metal and grunge music videos makes this a no-brainer in my book. If you’re a Full Moon fan (or grew up on 80’s MTV) you’ll love it, and everyone else will hate it.
- DirectorCharles BandStarsBlake AdamsJacqueline LovellBob SchottThe "head" of the family is literally that - a giant head on a tiny body, who psychically controls the rest of his even more unusual family.I know this isn’t a horror movie per se (or maybe I’ve just become too desensitized by the genre lol) but it’s a very entertaining film with a silly plot and really fun characters. If you’re a fan of Full Moon Productions (Castle Freak, Re-Animator, From Beyond) or the Tales From the Crypt films, then this is right up your alley.
- DirectorDaniel BoydStarsJesse EmeryMarjorie FitzsimmonsLaurie PenningtonFive passengers in a bus depot are waiting for a bus that is overdue. To pass the time, they start telling each other horror stories.I can’t give this anthology a perfect score because it’s a terrible film, but oh is it a gem! The acting is so amazingly bad and the stories are so ridiculous, but done in such a perfect way that it’s almost as if the writers were well aware of what they were doing. The first story is far and away the best but the awful acting keeps your interest through the rest as well. Watch this with a group who enjoys drinking and is tired of watching Troll 2 for the billionth time and you will be their new movie-choosing champion.
- DirectorDavid IrvingStarsBrian RobbinsBill CalvertTricia Leigh FisherA military experiment to create a race of super-warriors go awry, and legions of murderous zombies are unleased upon a surburan neighborhood. What a hidden gem! Bud began as a bit over the top in cheesiness for my taste, but when he eventually grew on me I was loving every minute of this film. Watch it with a group and give Bud a chance. It will make for a great evening, I promise!
- DirectorBrian YuznaStarsJeffrey CombsBruce AbbottClaude Earl JonesDoctors Herbert West and Dan Cain discover the secret to creating human life and proceed to create a perfect woman from dead tissue.I am such a fan of these over-the-top films because I love how they spare no expense to achieve a certain level of absurdity. Henenlotter tried a similar plot line to this one year after this with Frankenhooker and as much as I adore his effort, this movie is far superior.
- DirectorGeorge MihalkaStarsPaul KelmanLori HallierNeil AffleckA decades-old folk tale surrounding a deranged murderer killing those who celebrate Valentine's Day turns out to be true to legend when a group defies the killer's order and people start turning up dead. This is such an underrated film and deserves so much more praise. The characters are so lovable and endearing that you actually care about their inevitable demise, and the unique plot may have a few slow points but it’s a very fun ride all the way to the beautifully dreary end credits song.
- DirectorDavid DeCoteauStarsAndras JonesLinnea QuigleyRobin StilleAs part of a sorority ritual, pledges and their male companions steal a trophy from a bowling alley; unbeknownst to them, it contains a devilish imp who makes their lives a living Hell.Come for Linnea Quigley and stay for the absolute bat-shit insane plot, as you go from scene to scene wondering how a script like this not only gets written, but gets picked up and made into a full length movie. The characters are fun, the plot never gets dull, and with the exception of a weak ending it’s the perfect movie to watch with a bunch of friends who also have a soft spot for cheesy bizarre goodness.
- DirectorAndrew FlemingStarsJennifer RubinBruce AbbottRichard LynchThe lone survivor of a suicide cult wakes from a thirteen-year coma in a psychiatric ward, where other patients suddenly start dying under mysterious and gruesome circumstances. All of the comparisons to Elm Street 3 are spot on, which is why I absolutely love this movie. It has the same atmosphere, same quirky lovable characters (one of the actresses is in Dream Warriors as well), and a decent plot line that keeps your interest all the way through.
- DirectorStephen KingStarsEmilio EstevezPat HingleLaura HarringtonA group of people try to survive when machines start to come alive and become homicidal.A Stephen King horror story about machines coming to life is about as unique as it gets. It’s a fun movie with a great cast and although there is quite a bit of down time the creepy atmosphere and action scenes make up for it.
- DirectorThom EberhardtStarsCatherine Mary StewartKelli MaroneyRobert BeltranA comet wipes out most of life on Earth, leaving two Valley Girls fighting against cannibal zombies and a sinister group of scientists. Not much happens for the majority of this movie but the characters and atmosphere capture the 80’s so perfectly that I can’t help but return to it over and over again.
- DirectorSteve MinerStarsDana KimmellTracie SavageRichard BrookerJason Voorhees stalks a group of friends who have just arrived to spend the weekend at a cabin near Crystal Lake. The attempt at making a horror movie in 3-D automatically makes this my favorite in the series, and even though it's no more (or less) creative than the rest I also enjoyed the characters in this one the most.
- DirectorAlbert BandStarsDamon MartinRoyal DanoPhil FondacaroThe Ghoulies wreak havoc at an amusement park, disposing of those who mistake them for mere fairground attractions. This one blows the original out of the water. I would say it’s because horror films at a carnival are always so much more entertaining, but then I watched Funhouse and clearly it’s more than that. The characters alone are enough to bring me back, but I also really enjoy watching sequels that realize their potential to be a bit campier (i.e. Evil Dead) because it’s the lack of humor that often makes them dull.
- DirectorStan WinstonStarsLance HenriksenJeff EastJohn D'AquinoAfter a tragic accident, a man conjures up a towering, vengeful demon called Pumpkinhead to destroy a group of unsuspecting teenagers.I’m obviously a fan of the campier films and fully expected this one to be just that, but thankfully I was wrong. It has a perfect blend of humor and seriousness, with a great plot to make it a very solid movie.
- DirectorJeff BurrStarsAndrew RobinsonAmi DolenzSoleil Moon FryeThrill-seeking teenagers resurrect a demon from his grave and a bloody rampage for revenge begins. This is such a great sequel. I actually love the cast of characters in this one more than the original, even though it’s not nearly as serious and scary, and the entire movie has a bit more amateurish feeling to it. So if you are alone, watch the original, and if you are with a group, watch this one.
- DirectorMark HerrierAlan OrmsbyStarsJill SchoelenTom VillardDee WallaceA master of disguise deranged killer begins killing off the college students who are organizing a horror-movie marathon in an abandoned theater. This movie is such a great, fun time (with zero nudity for a change) and there are so many great characters that embrace the 80’s feel. If anyone knows how I can get my hands on the shock clock I'll be your friend for life.
- DirectorWes CravenStarsMatthew LabyorteauxKristy SwansonMichael SharrettAfter his friend is killed by her abusive father, the new kid in town attempts to save her by implanting a robotic microchip into her brain. This movie doesn’t get the credit is deserves. An amazing cast (with a robot!), great cheesy dialogue, and a plot that gets more and more absurd each minute. Watch this with friends. They will love you for it.
- DirectorRobert HiltzikStarsFelissa RoseJonathan TierstenKaren FieldsBunks and showers are a mad stabber's beat at a summer camp strictly for teens. You’ll spend most of the movie wanting this frail, shy girl to stand up and grow some balls, and then you’re graced with one of horror's most infamous endings. (Check out the sequels for a more silly approach.)
- DirectorMick GarrisStarsScott GrimesLiane CurtisTerrence MannEggs of the small but voracious alien creatures called Crites are left behind on earth and, after hatching, set their appetites on the small farm town of Grover's Bend. The original is great, but I feel it's just slightly eked out by this less serious sequel.
- DirectorScott SpiegelStarsLiz KernRenée EstevezDan HicksThe overnight stock crew of a local supermarket find themselves being stalked and slashed by a mysterious maniac. We came across this movie on a whim and I’m really surprised it isn’t on more lists. Despite a boring first thirty minutes the last hour of deaths was fantastic and very creative.
- DirectorGilbert AdlerStarsDennis MillerErika EleniakAngie EverhartThe Crypt Keeper returns to tell the story of a funeral parlor that moonlights as a vampire bordello. This is one of those movies where everything comes together so perfectly, and I wouldn’t change a thing. A creative plot line mixed with fun (albeit misogynistic) characters and cheesy effects for violence with hardly any down time. Definitely watch this with a group of friends (assuming they are not offended by lots and lots of bewbs).
- DirectorJohn CarpenterStarsKeith GordonJohn StockwellAlexandra PaulA nerdish boy buys a strange car with an evil mind of its own and his nature starts to change to reflect it.Aside from the fact that I am a sucker for movies placed in the 60’s, I really love everything about this film. The characters were perfectly chosen, the plot was fun, and the 60’s music is always a nice treat for me.
- DirectorWes CravenStarsBrandon Quintin AdamsEverett McGillWendy RobieTwo adults and a juvenile break into a house occupied by a brother and sister and their stolen children. There, they must fight for their lives. This film is more suspenseful than scary, but it seems Craven managed to channel his inner David Lynch when writing (and casting) this demented mindfuck of a movie. It has a great layer of comic relief that helps get through the film’s harsh reality and I personally loved every creepy minute of it.
- DirectorBrett LeonardStarsJeff FaheyPierce BrosnanJenny WrightA simple man is turned into a genius through the application of computer science.Albeit a sci-fi film more than a horror film, this is one of the more creative plots I’ve seen in this genre. I had always thought it was written by Steven King but upon further investigation it appears not to be the case. Great graphics, great casting, and with the exception of a bit of lag there isn’t anything I dislike about it.
- DirectorMary LambertStarsDale MidkiffDenise CrosbyFred GwynneAfter tragedy strikes, a grieving father discovers an ancient burial ground behind his home with the power to raise the dead. This is one of the best movie renditions of King’s works, with an amazing cast and superior storyline. It holds a great creepiness the entire way through, and the casting choices are top-notch. This is a must-see for any horror fan.
- DirectorPhilip KaufmanStarsDonald SutherlandBrooke AdamsJeff GoldblumWhen strange seeds drift to earth from space, mysterious pods begin to grow and invade San Francisco, replicating the city's residents one body at a time. What an amazing movie. Despite the slight lag in character development it gradually just builds and builds and never loses steam. I haven’t seen the original but I’ve read that this is regarded by critics as one of the best remakes in film history. How you go wrong with Donald Sutherland and Jeff Goldblum?
- DirectorJoe DanteStarsDee WallacePatrick MacneeDennis DuganAfter a bizarre and near deadly encounter with a serial killer, a television newswoman is sent to a remote mountain resort whose residents may not be what they seem. There’s nothing better than watching movies that start hot right out of the gate and keep the momentum the entire way through. I was hooked from the first scene and really enjoyed the characters and storyline, which was predictable yet entertaining.
- DirectorRobert KurtzmanStarsTammy LaurenAndrew DivoffAngus ScrimmA demonic djinn attempts to grant its owner three wishes, which will allow him to summon his brethren to Earth.Released in 1997, this has the comforting cheesy dialogue and bad acting so I decided to add it. The special effects are more modernized and I really abhor horror movies made late enough to have cell phones, but wow is it a great film. Tons of gore and an amazing cast make this a really fun ride, and I definitely recommend giving it a chance.
- DirectorJames JusticeUmberto LenziStarsNicolas De TothSarah BuxtonRawley ValverdeAfter the execution of a motorcycle gang leader convicted of murder, a helmeted biker goes on a killing spree during spring break in Florida. If you can go into this film fully accepting of a cast that is completely void of any acting skills (save for the great John Saxon), then you might just enjoy this pile of trash. It’s a Spring Break film complete with gratuitous T&A, awful 80’s fashion, and metal music (thanks Randy Piper!) sprinkled throughout, but then incorporates a biker gang and a serial killer with a unique killing method. It took me a while to decide if it was good or bad, and once I decided it was bad I really got into it. I will definitely return to this one with a like-minded group of friends.
- DirectorDavid A. PriorStarsMarcia KarrDavid CampbellFritz MatthewsTwo years ago, a young woman named Valerie was burned after entering a tanning salon. Now, her twin sister, Rhonda, runs a local gym where, all of a sudden, people are being murdered.I want to give this a perfect score but aside from all the horrible awesomeness it’s still a horrible movie. It doesn’t have the batshit crazy ending like Death Spa, but oh what a fun ride it is! Playing out as more of an 80’s workout video sprinkled with moments of pathetically plotted deaths, this wreck of a film has enough of a cheese factor to make you laugh out loud every brutal step of the way. Plus, it wins the unique prize of having my favorite opening song in any movie ever. Definitely watch this with a group.
- DirectorTom DaleyStarsDeborah WintersJames HustonAndra St. IvanyiA group of high schoolers decide to stay in a natural museum after closing hours, but a newly acquired and mysterious lamp hiding a deadly force will turn the fun into horror.I was pleased at how perfectly this fit my mood when I watched it, which is probably why I placed it into my 'Top 50' list. It’s very cheesy with poor acting and a very low budget, but the deaths are very creative and it’s the only horror movie I know that takes place in a museum. It’s amusing without intending to be, which is perfect.
- DirectorDavid E. DurstonStarsBhaskar Roy ChowdhuryJadin WongRhonda FultzA group of Satanic hippies wreak havoc on a small town where a young boy whose sister and grandfather were victimized by them tries to get even--with deadly results. This may be the craziest movie I’ve ever seen. It is raw, brutal, shameful, gritty, cringe-worthy, and unforgiving in its attempt to shock the viewers. It has tons of great characters (as daft as they all are) and a *beep* crazy plotline that makes crazy movies like Street Trash look like a Hallmark movie. Watch this with friends, but friends who are not easily offended.
- DirectorJohn CarpenterStarsSam NeillJürgen ProchnowJulie CarmenAn insurance investigator begins discovering that the impact a horror writer's books have on his fans is more than inspirational. This movie holds a very special place in my heart since I recall seeing it in the theater when it first came out and it scared the hell out of me. It has a brilliant storyline and great characters, and although I don’t see it on many lists I think it deserves much more attention.
- DirectorBrian Trenchard-SmithStarsCristi HarrisDarin HeamesBobby JacobyHigh school students throw a Halloween party in a mansion haunted by a young demon. In all honesty I started watching this thinking it was the original, as I hated it the first time and wanted to give it a second shot. Then I noticed that the actress from Hey Dude was in it and decided to keep going. I’m glad I did, because it ended up being very entertaining. It’s filled with great characters, fun effects, dumb decisions that no one in real life would ever make, and just a very enjoyable ride altogether.
- DirectorRobert ScottStarsMichael St. MichaelsThaddeus GolasDouglass BellA family takes delivery of a new television set, unaware that it is the gateway by which killer zombies enter the world. This may be the lowest budget film to make my list, but it’s such an enjoyable film. This is definitely one of the better zombie films I’ve seen, and although I’m very certain you will abhor this movie and curse my name for even having it on my list, I am very happy to have it in my life. If you’ve seen Troll 2 and Street Trash and want a terrible movie to laugh with your friends until your guts hurt, this is the one.
- DirectorDoug RobertsonStarsBrien BlakelyBlake PickettBrad HanksTwenty years ago a deadly accident forced Eddie Burber from his home. Since Eddie was younger he wanted to be part of the family business "The Burber Haunted House." A note is placed on the local Fraternity giving permission to use the old house as a fund-raiser. While the students prepare the house, they soon are hunted down and placed in the Haunted House for amusement. One thing is for sure. Nobody knows it really happening - People are dying, and people are laughing. This is one of those low-budget gems that is completely overlooked, and then once you see it you wish it had been in your obscure-yet-awesome movie arsenal all along. This turned out to be very enjoyable with its goofy characters, clever premise, and overall ridiculousness, and it just goes to show how little you need to make a fun movie.
- DirectorChristopher ThiesStarsTim R. MorganMike MagriCharles MajkaPeople are being killed off near a popular mountain lodge, with a legend claiming that the mountain is haunted by a deadly Native American demonic curse. This movie is absolutely horrible, and I love it. Horrible dialogue, stop animation used for the monsters (which I’ve read are leftover props from a Dokken video), a creepy song (almost as creepy as that damned song in Ghosthouse), a plot that makes no sense, and characters who are beyond ridiculous. Forget low budget; this is as close as it gets to NO budget. My only regret is that I watched it alone, as this is definitely served best with multiple people to tear it apart. Oh, and rest assured, you will most certainly hate it. You’ve been warned.
- DirectorRay Di ZazzoStarsAddison RandallKatrina AlexyRichard DryAt a Halloween party, a young boy is almost killed by his drunken, alcoholic father. Ten years afterward, the boy goes on a murder spree. What a treat this turned out to be. When it comes to awful films, it truly has it all: Great characters with terrible lines, a ridiculous plot, and odd, quirky scenes and one liners jumping out around every corner. If you love Hauntedween and Hack-O-Lantern, this has a very similar feel, so get a group together and be prepared to laugh through the disappointment.
- DirectorJohn HoughStarsSarah TorgovTerence KellyMark EricksonA group of travellers make emergency landing on an island in the Pacific Northwest after their seaplane malfunctioned, and stumble across an isolated and psychopathic family. This is one of those films that bothers me because the characters are useless idiots who could easily prevent all of the tragedies that befall them. However, most of these characters just happen to be very charismatic and I loved watching them. The plot is weak yet manages to stay entertaining, and the death tolls keep a great pace as well. Definitely worth a watch.
- DirectorFrank De FelittaStarsCharles DurningRobert F. LyonsClaude Earl JonesIn a small Southern town, four vigilantes wrongfully execute a mentally-challenged man, but after the court sets them free mysterious "accidents" begin to kill them off one by one. This is such a fantastic movie! My interest was piqued after reading an article about a recent screening where the director was amazed at how many people turned up for it, and now having seen it I completely understand. It’s a made for TV movie which means there is minimum violence, but the uniquely clever premise and the spectacular cast is hard to beat, and I will definitely be returning to this one again.
- DirectorCharles KaufmanStarsTiana PierceNancy HendricksonDeborah LuceTwo brothers kidnap and brutalize three women for the pleasure of their demented mother.I was on board with this film from the start, with its quirkiness and low-budget goodness. It initially reminded me of another favorite exploitation film called I Drink Your Blood. There were very few scenes that categorized it as such but those scenes were admittedly very disturbing and I almost had to skip past it. I realize that is the intent, and it reminds me that as desensitized as I feel I’ve become from watching all of these films, there are some things that will always get to me.
- DirectorGary P. CohenStarsGary SchwartzChick KaplanRobin LeedsA husband and wife open a video store in a new town, and come to find out that the locals only rent horror films and the "occasional triple X'er", and make their own snuff videos.I don’t know what it is about this movie, but it has a special magic that could only have been created on a SOV budget. The premise is so bizarre and I spent the entire movie enamored by how it was going to end. Every scene, every outfit, every item in view just reeks of pure raw 80’s, and I salivated over all of it. You truly have to be a certain type of horror fan to appreciate this type of film and I don’t expect anyone else to understand the allure, but for those of us who do, it’s a rare, fantastic gem. (My only negative critique is the fact that they could have gotten the point across without adding the element of sexual assault, but I also understand that they wanted it to be as disturbing as possible and that element certainly brought it to another sick level.)
- DirectorMaria LeaseStarsDenise CrosbySam BottomsRip TornA toy manufacturer buys the 'Dolly Dearest' factory in Mexico, where the malevolent spirit of Sanzia, a devil child, has taken refuge in one of the porcelain dolls, and eventually takes control of his daughter. It appears the writers were aware of this potentially being watched by young kids, as there is a lack of nudity and profanity (for the most part). That being said, I really enjoyed it. I wouldn’t say it was very scary but the characters were all enjoyable to watch and the story was unique and engaging. I will definitely be returning to this one.
- DirectorMichael LaughlinStarsMichael MurphyLouise FletcherDan ShorA scientist is experimenting with teenagers and turning them into murderers. If you told me David Lynch had a hand in this film it would not surprise me in the least. There are so many odd scenes (the dance scene is incredible) and despite the ending being soured by the horrid acting of Michael Murphy it turned out to be a fairly decent story.
- DirectorWilliam LustigStarsRobert DaviClaudia ChristianMichael LernerA supernatural, maniac killer cop teams up with a Times Square serial killer.I found this just as entertaining as the original, with great action sequences, fun characters, a super hot policewoman, and fantastic pyrotechnic stunts.
- DirectorBrian Trenchard-SmithStarsWarwick DavisJohn GatinsLee ArmstrongAn evil leprechaun finds himself in Las Vegas, where he proceeds to cause mischief by killing people, granting twisted wishes, and infecting a young man with his green blood.I really dreaded continuing this series, but I must say I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this one. Another reviewer tagged it as “The Best and Worst of the Bunch” and that is extremely accurate. Yes, the leprechaun is still the worst part, but if you can get over his annoyances the rest of the actors and plotline are extremely enjoyable.
- DirectorRichard CiupkaStarsJohn VernonSamantha EggarLinda ThorsonSix young actresses auditioning for a movie role at a remote mansion are targeted by a mysterious masked murderer.Curtains is a prime example of why I love digging so deep into this genre; It’s proof of how many hidden gems are out there, and each time it happens I feel like I’ve stumbled upon a secret treasure that I never would have found otherwise. It may be slow-paced in areas and the death scenes aren’t clever by any means, but damn if that killer’s mask isn’t the creepiest thing I’ve seen in ages.
- DirectorPaul GoldingStarsCliff De YoungRoxanne HartJoey LawrenceA visiting son tries to warn his father and stepmother that they are being menaced by a living and intelligent pulse of electricity that moves from house to house and terrorizes the residents therein.Awesome, awesome, awesome. This movie kicks ass. Great pacing, fun characters, and a really clever plot line which kept my attention the entire way through. Is it far fetched? Absolutely. But if you don’t keep tabs on all the things that could never happen in real life you will hopefully enjoy it as much as I did.
- DirectorJohn CarrPhillip MarshakTom McGowanStarsBarbara WylerJamie ScogginStacey Lyons"Night Train to Terror" is a 1985 horror anthology movie where God and Satan are on a train discussing the fate of three individuals. This is...I just...it’s sort of...wow. I have no idea how to explain this jumbled, bizarre, incoherent, mix-matched hodgepodge of a train wreck (pun intended). It consists of three separate stories (with one of them starring a guy who looks like James Van Der Beek, one of them starring a guy who looks like Jack White, and one of them actually starring Richard Moll) with horrid claymation demons, insinuated rape scenes, and an uncomfortable amount of nude women, all tied together with god and satan having a conversation and a terrible 80’s Menudo-type band rocking out on a train. I can’t decide if it deserves a 1/10 or a 10/10. This is a great movie to watch with a group so long as the insinuated rape scenes and excess nudity won’t offend anyone. Very, very strange.
- DirectorDavid AllenCharles BandJohn Carl BuechlerStarsJeffrey ByronRichard MollLeslie WingA demonic wizard challenges a modern-day computer programmer to a battle of technology vs. sorcery, with the programmer's girlfriend as the prize. This is much more of a sci-fi/fantasy than horror but wow is it amazing. Not amazing in a way that the general public will enjoy, but in a way that those of us who enjoy bad films will enjoy. There are seven short segments each done by a different writer/director and all chock full of stop-motion effects, dragons, Richard Moll as a wizard, mutant bikers, and a cameo by W.A.S.P.. Need I say more?
- DirectorRubén Galindo Jr.StarsJon Michael BischofGabriela HasselHelena RojoOn his seventeenth birthday, Michael unwittingly unlocks the evil forces of a Ouija board. This was on my wishlist for ages and despite the lag sag in the middle it certainly did not disappoint. The fact that this is supposed to take place in Mexico and only one character speaks a few lines of Spanish should give an indication as to how messy this ride is going to be. Plus, the thought of it being made to be taken seriously makes it even more adorable. The lead character must have attended the same overacting college as Eric “Garbage Day!” Freeman from Silent Night Deadly Night 2, as he takes his talents to the absolute limits, all the while donning his trusty dinosaur pj's. His mother is played by a poor man’s Cher, and the daft lieutenant looks like Dave Grohl with a bad hairdo. Combine this with 90 minutes of awful choices and a soundtrack that I’m fairly certain samples Man in Motion from St. Elmo’s Fire, and you have quite a cringeworthy evening ahead of you. Be sure to invite your friends so they can suffer too, you little sadist, you.
- DirectorAndrew DavisStarsJohn FriedrichAdrian ZmedErnest Harden Jr.A group of rangers go camping on unfamiliar forest grounds. All's well until the group members start getting killed by a cunning killer in the woods.I can understand the negative reviews for this one, but I found it to be a refreshing change of pace from the plethora of generic teens in the woods films. This lacks the gratuitous nudity and high death count (which I’ll assume is why most don’t like it) but instead relies on tension building, atmosphere, and a superb cast of memorable characters. In my opinion, this deserves more praise than it gets.
- DirectorJames W. RobersonStarsJames HoughtonAlbert SalmiLynn CarlinA witch put to death in 1692 swears vengeance on her persecutors and returns to the present day to punish their descendants. This is horror movie #404 on my list and was a very refreshing break from the past few dull ones I’ve watched. It has great pacing, a fun plot, great music, some great deaths, fun characters (although the father gets more and more irritating as the movie progresses), and still maintains enough cheesiness to make fun of with a group of friends. I will definitely watch this one again.
- DirectorGary ShermanStarsHeather O'RourkeTom SkerrittNancy AllenCarol Anne is staying with her aunt in a high-rise building, where the supernatural forces haunting her make their return.“Terrific!” is not a word you will hear out of most people’s mouths when you ask them to rate this film, but I am not most people and I thought this movie was extremely underrated. I’ll admit the dialogue is not up to par with the first two and it definitely doesn’t have that warm, fuzzy, oversaturated Spielberg touch, but this is the only one that creates suspense from the very start and keeps that sense of imminent danger throughout the entire movie. Heather O’ Rourke actually has a personality in this one, Lara Flynn Boyle is stunningly gorgeous, and the mirror effects are simply brilliant. Stop putting it off and watch it already!
- DirectorDavid KeithStarsWil WheatonClaude AkinsMalcolm DanareWhen a meteorite lands near his family farm during a storm in Tennessee, the son of a struggling farmer believes it's connected to strange plague-like events afflicting the crops, the farm animals and even the family themselves.I’m very surprised this movie isn’t on more lists. It has all the creepy elements of being an H.P. Lovecraft story, and it flows really well. No one here is winning any Oscars, but I felt the casting job was terrific. Plus, it’s void of any nudity and very little vulgarity so you can watch it with your sensitive friends =)
- DirectorAdam RifkinStarsNoel PetersSavannahStephanie BlakeAn invisible scientist escapes from an asylum and teaches high-school physics to nubile teens.Let’s get this out of the way: Yes, this film is filled to the brim with nudity, voyeurism, and third degree rape scenes. It’s a soft-core porn flick disguised as a horror film. That being said, it is hilarious. It is in no way intended to be taken seriously, and the fight scenes towards the end of the movie are some of the best/worst performances I can ever recall seeing. Pure ridiculously cheesy brilliance. And the main character’s evil laugh is way more sinister and annoying than the one in Evil Laugh (which isn’t that great). This is a great movie to watch with a group, so long as their levels of misogynistic tolerance are sky high.
- DirectorMark RosmanStarsKate McNeilEileen DavidsonJanis WardAfter a seemingly innocent prank goes horribly wrong, a group of sorority sisters are stalked and murdered one by one in their sorority house while throwing a party to celebrate their graduation.Despite the great reviews I was still hesitant to watch this, as I assumed it would be a dull breastfest because of the trailer. It turned out to be very enjoyable with great pacing and a fun storyline, with only two topless scenes that I can recall. I will definitely watch this one again.
- DirectorArmand MastroianniStarsDon ScardinoCaitlin O'HeaneyElizabeth KempA young bride-to-be is being stalked upon by a serial killer in Staten Island. She gets help from a former lover, but will they manage to escape? No other film I can think of comes as close to Halloween as this one. Three young women being attacked by a killer with a knife, in the autumn, with music as close to Carpenter’s without being sued for copyright infringement. It’s a solid formula, especially when it has such great character development with a cast of great characters. There is a lot of down time but that time is spent with Tom Hanks (in his first role) and a character named Nancy who is so beautiful and charismatic that I could watch her do nothing all day long. This isn’t Halloween’s little sister; it’s good enough to be considered Halloween’s twin.
- DirectorGenie JosephThomas DoranBrendan FaulknerStarsFelix WardMaria PechukasDan ScottA wicked sorcerer tries to sacrifice a group of people inside his house with the intention of using their vitality to keep his wife alive. This is another movie that is very hard to rate. Maybe I just have a unique tolerance for these poorly filmed disasters with horrid dialogue and plotlines that go nowhere, because the two people who watched this with me were bored out of their minds. It did have some dragged out scenes and the lighting is terrible, but I loved the special effects and over-the-top characters. I’ll definitely watch this again but it will probably be alone. You’ve been warned.
- DirectorJim WynorskiStarsDick DurockHeather LocklearLouis JourdanIn this tongue-in-cheek sequel, the benevolent bog creature falls for the vegetarian, plant-loving daughter of the evil scientist who created him.Yes, this is much campier than the original, but I enjoyed it just as much. They obviously didn’t take this very seriously but still managed to have great pacing, fun characters (the two young boys are the best part about the movie), and very little violence and sexual scenes. I believe it may even be viewable for children although the jokes are definitely adult oriented.
- DirectorBill FroehlichStarsLori LethinBrendan HughesAlex RoccoIn the early 1980s, a series of gruesome murders occurred at Crippen High School. A few years later, a film crew uses the now-abandoned Crippen High as the set for a film. But an uninvited guest makes an appearance on the set.Despite the plethora of negative reviews for this movie, I found it to be extremely clever and entertaining. I really loved the animated cast, who all took turns spewing a magnificent amount of self-aware jokes that were spread on thick yet not too overpowering. Yes, George Clooney makes a small appearance, but watching Maureen McCormick playing a kooky, off the rails police officer was pure gold. I’ll admit the movie within a movie concept was confusing at times and I’m not sure if it all actually makes sense, but nonetheless it’s a fun ride and I would happily ride it again.
- DirectorGreydon ClarkStarsJack PalanceMartin LandauTarah NutterSandy and Greg are teenagers who go camping, despite warnings not to, with their friends. They soon encounter aliens, who are using the area as a hunting ground.Despite the slow burn throughout most of the film I found the characters and scenes to be entertaining (and cheesy!) enough to hold my interest, and I would definitely watch it again in the future. Plus, it’s a great opportunity to see classic actors like Jack Palance, Neville Brand, and Martin Landau working together.
