1. Moulin Rouge! (2001)
PG-13 | 127 min | Drama, Musical, Romance
A poor Bohemian poet in 1890s Paris falls for a beautiful courtesan and nightclub star coveted by a jealous duke.
Director: Baz Luhrmann | Stars: Nicole Kidman, Ewan McGregor, John Leguizamo, Jim Broadbent
Votes: 299,451 | Gross: $57.39M
An original story with great music from the 80s perfectly well adapted to this film.
The plot is quite simple,a forbidden love story very much in the style of Romeo and Juliet. but the chemistry between Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor make it very special along with spectacular musical numbers.
2. The Greatest Showman (2017)
PG | 105 min | Biography, Drama, Musical
Celebrates the birth of show business and tells of a visionary who rose from nothing to create a spectacle that became a worldwide sensation.
Director: Michael Gracey | Stars: Hugh Jackman, Michelle Williams, Zac Efron, Zendaya
Votes: 311,716 | Gross: $174.34M
An original story with whole new original songs and big musical numbers done to perfection.
The weakness of this film its the story, it’s not bad but it’s not so great either.
This is one of those films of style over substance but with a spectacle as big as this one it doesn’t matter.
The costumes are beautiful, the soundtrack is incredible and the choreography is pretty good as well.
Another thing in its favor is the cast: everyone did a great job with the singing and dancing.
So really with so many great stuff this film has. You can overlook a not so amazing story and not much character development.
3. Chicago (2002)
PG-13 | 113 min | Comedy, Crime, Musical
Two death-row murderesses develop a fierce rivalry while competing for publicity, celebrity, and a sleazy lawyer's attention.
Director: Rob Marshall | Stars: Renée Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Richard Gere, Taye Diggs
Votes: 243,459 | Gross: $170.69M
Another very glossy musical with amazing singing and dancing.
This is the only broadway adaptation that we can understand why it was adapted to the big and why it’s so beloved on the stage.
With so many broadway adaptations you feel like so much fuzz over let’s phantom of the Opera for this ?
But with Chicago you don’t feel that way. The whole film is a big show to enjoy from start to finish.
The downside is the very cynical story. When it comes to musicals I think a positive message is more fitting.
4. Beauty and the Beast (1991)
G | 84 min | Animation, Family, Fantasy
A prince cursed to spend his days as a hideous monster sets out to regain his humanity by earning a young woman's love.
Directors: Gary Trousdale, Kirk Wise | Stars: Paige O'Hara, Robby Benson, Jesse Corti, Rex Everhart
Votes: 479,824 | Gross: $218.97M
The most beautiful animated film ever made with great music and wonderful story about inner beauty and true love.
The animation feels so real that sometimes you forget you are watching an animated film.
5. Grease (1978)
PG | 110 min | Comedy, Musical, Romance
Good girl Sandy Olsson and greaser Danny Zuko fell in love over the summer. When they unexpectedly discover they're now in the same high school, will they be able to rekindle their romance?
Director: Randal Kleiser | Stars: John Travolta, Olivia Newton-John, Stockard Channing, Jeff Conaway
Votes: 300,732 | Gross: $188.76M
The classic musical by excellence with great songs, nice musical numbers and a happy ending.
It doesn’t matter from which generation are you, it’s impossible to not love Grease
6. The Lion King (1994)
G | 88 min | Animation, Adventure, Drama
Lion prince Simba and his father are targeted by his bitter uncle, who wants to ascend the throne himself.
Directors: Roger Allers, Rob Minkoff | Stars: Matthew Broderick, Jeremy Irons, James Earl Jones, Whoopi Goldberg
Votes: 1,143,017 | Gross: $422.78M
Great music and a very nice story. The only problem for being a musical it only had 7 songs. It’s a very short soundtrack compared to what we had with beauty and the beast.
7. Mamma Mia! (2008)
PG-13 | 108 min | Comedy, Musical, Romance
The story of a bride-to-be trying to find her real father told using hit songs by the popular 1970s group ABBA.
Director: Phyllida Lloyd | Stars: Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Amanda Seyfried, Stellan Skarsgård
Votes: 274,527 | Gross: $144.13M
Ok, the singing is not so great but not so horrible either.
What gets this film on my top 10 are great songs from ABBA very well put into the story and the feelgood vibe you get from a family musical.
8. Burlesque (I) (2010)
PG-13 | 119 min | Drama, Music, Musical
A small-town girl ventures to Los Angeles and finds her place in a neo-burlesque club run by a former dancer.
Director: Steve Antin | Stars: Cher, Christina Aguilera, Alan Cumming, Eric Dane
Votes: 93,210 | Gross: $39.44M
Ok this Is here just because of the very fun musical numbers.
Because the whole thing feels generic and looks a bitt cheap.
It doesn’t look as professional as something like: Moulin Rouge, Chicago, the original beauty and the beast or the recent The greatest showman.
Still a very entretaining chick flick to watch at home with you girls and enjoy the catchy tunes.
9. Beauty and the Beast (I) (2017)
PG | 129 min | Adventure, Family, Fantasy
A selfish Prince is cursed to become a monster for the rest of his life, unless he learns to fall in love with a beautiful young woman he keeps prisoner.
Director: Bill Condon | Stars: Emma Watson, Dan Stevens, Luke Evans, Josh Gad
Votes: 334,723 | Gross: $504.01M
A very descent remake of the 1991 animated film.
This film appeals mostly to the nostalgia for the fans of the original and it doesn’t dissapoint much.
Except for the dance scene.
10. Rock of Ages (2012)
PG-13 | 123 min | Comedy, Drama, Musical
A small-town girl and a city boy meet on the Sunset Strip while pursuing their Hollywood dreams.
Director: Adam Shankman | Stars: Julianne Hough, Diego Boneta, Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin
Votes: 81,682 | Gross: $38.52M
Ok there are 2 type of Musicals
some very ambitious and expensive musicals done to dazzle audiences and make us feel like we are watching a big broadway show in our screens.
And there are others made just for fun and not take them very seriously.
Rock of Ages falls into the second category and it delivers what it promises no more no less.
The music is good and The story is simple.
So at the end it’s a film to just relax and enjoy without big expectations.
