Nora Ephron was educated at Wellesley College, Massachusetts. She was an acclaimed essayist (Crazy Salad 1975), novelist (Heartburn 1983), and had written screenplays for several popular films, all featuring strong female characters, such as anti-nuclear activist Karen Silkwood (Silkwood (1983), co-written with Alice Arlen) and a mobster's feisty independent daughter Cookie Voltecki (Cookie (1989), also co-written with Arlen). Ephron's hard-headed sensibilities helped make Rob Reiner's When Harry Met Sally... (1989) a clear-eyed view of modern romance, and she earned an Oscar nomination for her original screenplay.
Ephron made her directorial debut with the comedy This Is My Life (1992), co-scripted by her sister Delia Ephron, which starred Julie Kavner as a single mother who struggles to establish herself as a stand-up comedienne. Ephron followed up by helming and co-writing Sleepless in Seattle (1993), a romantic comedy in which lovers Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan are separated for most of the film. Less about love than about love in the movies, the film drew inspiration from the beloved shipboard romance An Affair to Remember (1957), starring Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr.
Ephron was born in New York City, the daughter of stage and screen writing team Henry Ephron and Phoebe Ephron, who used her infancy as the subject of their play "Three's a Family" and based their comedy Take Her, She's Mine (1963) on letters their daughter wrote them from college. Their screenplays include There's No Business Like Show Business (1954), Carousel (1956) and Desk Set (1957). Formerly married to novelist Dan Greenburg and investigative journalist Carl Bernstein, Ephron was wed to crime journalist and screenwriter Nicholas Pileggi, at the time of her passing, who wrote such films as Goodfellas (1990). She was of Russian Jewish descent.- Writer

British-born American journalist and broadcaster. Cooke was born in Salford, Manchester: his father was an iron-fitter and Methodist lay-preacher. He grew up in Blackpool where his parents ran a guest house. Here he first came into contact with Americans, in the form of GIs on their way to fight in World War One. He won a scholarship to Jesus College, Cambridge, where he studied English. A fellowship from the Commonwealth Fund subsequently enabled him to study theatre at Yale and Harvard for two years. In 1934 he got his first broadcasting job, as a film critic for the BBC, but soon returned to the States and in 1941 became a US citizen. For a time he worked as a freelance journalist for The Times, reporting from New York. Then in 1945 he joined The Guardian as its US correspondent, a position he held until 1972. His first job was to cover the creation of the United Nations. In March 1946 he began a radio programme for the BBC called "American Letter". This was a series of 15-minute broadcasts in which he tried to give an impression of life in America. Cooke was warned by the producer that this would last no longer than 26 weeks: in the event, as "Letter from America", it lasted for 58 years, becoming the world's longest-running speech radio programme. Cooke made in total 2869 broadcasts, mostly from his 15th-floor flat on Fifth Avenue overlooking Central Park. Memorable broadcasts included his eyewitness account of the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy. He also broadcast on American TV, presenting "Omnibus" in the 1950s and from 1971 to 1993 presenting British programmes to American viewers for PBS' "Masterpiece Theatre" series. A much-respected figure on both sides of the Atlantic, he was granted an honorary knighthood by Queen Elizabeth II in 1973, and addressed Congress as part of the bicentennial celebrations. At the age of 95, having been forced to miss a broadcast due to his increasing ill-health, Cooke decided to end "Letter from America" (having in the past made 16 broadcasts from a hospital bed). The last programme was transmitted on 2nd March 2004 and he died less than a month later.- Writer

- John Fitzgerald Kennedy was born on May 29, 1917 in Brookline, Massachusetts, to Rose Kennedy (née Rose Elizabeth Fitzgerald) and Joseph P. Kennedy. John was named after his maternal grandfather, John "HoneyFitz" Fitzgerald, the mayor of Boston. John was very ill as a child and was given the last rites five times, the first one being when he was a new-born. He was the second of four boys born to an Irish Catholic family with nine children: Joseph Jr., John, Robert F. Kennedy (called Bobby), and Ted Kennedy (born Edward). Because Rose made Joe and Jack (the name his family called him) wear matching clothes, they fought a lot for attention. When John was young, the family moved from Boston to New York. John went to Choate, a private school. Most of the time, though, he was too sick to attend. In the late 1930s, father Joe became the ambassador to England. He took sons John and Robert with him, as well as his wife and daughters Kathleen and Rosemary Kennedy. John went to Princeton, then Harvard, and for his senior thesis, he wrote a piece about why England refused to get into the war until late. It was published in 1940 and called "Why England Slept". His older brother Joe was a pilot during the war, and was killed when the bombs his plane was carrying exploded. Not long after that, John's sister Kathleen and her husband died in a plane crash. In the early 1950s, John ran for Congress in Massachusetts and won. He married Jacqueline Kennedy (née Jacqueline Lee Bouvier) on September 12, 1953. Their daughter, Caroline Kennedy, was born on November 27, 1957 and their son, John Kennedy Jr., was born on November 25, 1960. They also had a stillborn daughter named Arabella and a son named Patrick Bouvier, who died a few days after birth. In 1954, J.F.K. had to have back surgery and in the hospital wrote his second book, "Profiles in Courage". His father always said that his son Joe was going to be President of the U.S.; when he died in World War II, though, that task was passed on to John. He ran for president in 1960 against Richard Nixon and narrowly won. His administration had many conflicts, the Bay of Pigs and the Cuban Missile Crisis being key examples. In November 1963, he and Jackie (his wife's nickname) went on a trip to Texas. Everywhere they went there were signs saying "Jack and Jackie." On November 22, 1963, John was to give a speech in Dallas, but on his way an assassin hidden on the sixth floor of the Texas School Book Depository opened fire at Kennedy, who was riding in an open car. Hit twice and severely wounded, Kennedy died in a local hospital at 1:00 P.M. The alleged assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald, was captured a short time later after shooting and killing a Dallas policeman, and was himself assassinated before he could be thoroughly interrogated, let alone tried. In just a little bit of irony, considering the death of Abraham Lincoln a century earlier, Kennedy was shot in a Ford Lincoln (Lincoln was in Ford's Theater when he was shot). He was laid to rest on his son's third birthday.

He died on 20 February 2005 in Aspen, Colorado, USA.- Anna Politkovskaya, a courageous Russian journalist who made enemies among Russia's official and unofficial power and survived more than one attempt on her life, was murdered in Moscow on the day of president Putin's birthday. She will remain the epitome of what an independent journalist should be.
She was born Anna Stepanovna Mazepa on August 30, 1958, in New York, where her Soviet-Ukrainian parents were diplomats at the United Nations. Her father, named Stepan Mazepa, was a ranking diplomat at the Ukrainian branch of the Soviet Mission at the UN. Young Anna went to school in the USA and grew up in a bilingual environment. In the 1970s she studied journalism and literature at Moscow University, graduating in 1980, with her thesis on Russian poet Marina Tsvetaeva. Politkovskaya began her journalist career in 'Izvestia', a leading Soviet paper of the time, then worked as correspondent for Aeroflot Soviet Airlines, and traveled extensively all over the former Soviet Union. During perestroika and after the collapse of the USSR, she worked for such Russian newspapers, as 'Obshchaya Gazeta', and 'Novaya Gazeta' among others. As a woman living in Moscow, she observed, in her own words, "Soviet Union at its most disgraceful" in the 1970s and 1980s, during the era of Leonid Brezhnev, and never wanted to find herself back there again.
From 1999 to 2006 Politkovskaya published her material in 'Novaya Gazeta' news group, which has such shareholders as George Soros and Mikhail Gorbachev. She was the author of 'Journey to hell. A Chechen diary', an award-winning documentary book in Russian. She was also the author of two books in English, 'A Durty War' (2001), and 'Putin's Russia' (2004). She covered a broad range of topics, such as human rights abuses, brutality in the army, the failures of the judicial system, the problems in the South of Russia, the Caucasus, especially the conflict in Chechnya, and the struggling democracy in Russia. Anna Politkovskaya won numerous awards for her reports and books, including the prestigious Prize for Freedom and Future of the Media (2005), 'Olof Palme Prize' (2004), OSCE Award (2003), "Golden Pen of Russia" (2000), and the "Golden Gong" (2000). She was also awarded for helping mothers of killed Russian soldiers by investigating their cases and representing them in courts.
Anna Politkovskaya had to postpone her reception of award for 'Courage in Journalism' (2002) in Los Angeles, because on that day she received an urgent call from Moscow, where people were held hostage in a theatre. She was asked to participate in negotiations, and she returned to Russia to help in negotiations with rebels who were holding hundreds of people hostage in a Moscow theatre. She had the nerve to enter the Moscow theatre on Dubrovka at the height of the tragedy with hostages. In 2004 she was involved in Beslan school hostage crisis. Over the course of her journalist career, Politkovskaya was a witness in several high profile criminal cases in Russia, such as cases about wrongful deaths of civilians in Chechnya, as well as cases about terrorist attacks in Moscow. She was a fearless, uncompromising, and uncomfortable witness, who had accumulated vast knowledge about the underpinnings of crime and terrorism in Russia. She had the courage to uncover the most uncomfortable truth.
Politkovskaya survived at least three attempts on her life, including a severe poisoning in 2004, that happened when she was on a plane to Chechnya. During the last two years she was limited in her travels there, albeit she continued her search for truth no matter how unpleasant it was. She was a strong critic of the Kremlin policies in Chechnya, including the mistakes of president Vladimir Putin made during the years of conflict. Politkovskaya was killed by several gunshots on Putin's birthday, October 7, 2006, in the afternoon, in an elevator at her apartment building in central Moscow. She had three bullet holes in her chest and one in her head. A "Makarov" handgun and four shell casings were found beside her body in the elevator. Russian TV showed a grainy footage of her suspected followers, a young man and a woman, recorded by surveillance cameras at the nearby supermarket where Politkovskaya was shopping just a few minutes before her death and at the entrance to her apartment building. Two days after the murder of Politkovskaya, according to the official statement, Russian president Vladimir Putin made a phone call to president Bush emphasizing that the "law enforcement organs of Russia will take all necessary measures for the objective investigations into the tragic death of the journalist Anna Politkovskaya." A reward of $900,000 was offered by Novaya Gazeta, the newspaper for which Politkovskaya worked, for the information leading to the arrest of her murderer.
Anna Politkovskaya was laid to rest in Troekurovskoe Cemetery in Moscow, Russia. She is survived by her ex-husband, a well-known Russian TV anchor Aleksandr Politkovsky, and their two grown-up children. Politkovskaya has been mourned by her fellow journalists as well as by freedom-loving people across the world. - Producer

- Arendt spent her childhood and youth in her Jewish parents' home with social democratic attitudes. After school she began studying theology and philosophy at the universities of Marburg, Freiburg im Breisgau and Heidelberg. She was a student of, among others, Martin Heidegger, Karl Jaspers and Edmund Husserl. In 1928 she completed her studies with a doctorate. Phil off. Her dissertation is entitled "Augustin's concept of love". Her doctoral supervisor was Karl Jaspers, with whom she maintained a friendly relationship throughout her life. In 1929 she moved to Berlin. There she married the philosopher Günther Anders in the same year. During this time she worked on German Romanticism. The research was completed in 1933 and she summarized the results under the title "Rahel Varnhagen. Life story of a German Jew from the Romantic period". The book was only published in 1959. It is a successful biography about the wife of the writer Karl August Varhagen von Ense.
Rahel Varnhagen had a great influence on contemporary literary life through her famous salon, in which Adalbert von Chamisso, Heinrich Heine, Wilhelm von Humboldt and the philosopher and theologian Friedrich Ernst David Schleiermacher frequented. The research for this biography introduced Hannah Arendt to the conditions of social adaptation for Jews. She further developed her findings into existential philosophical views. In 1933, the year the National Socialists came to power, Hannah Arendt was briefly arrested by the Gestapo (Secret State Police). She then emigrated to Paris via Switzerland. There she worked as a social worker at Jewish institutions. During this time she joined the "World Zionist Organization" initiative and met the philosophical writer Walter Benjamin, which resulted in a friendly relationship.
In 1935 she traveled to Palestine for the first time. Two years later her marriage ended in divorce. In 1940 she married the philosopher Heinrich Blücher. In the same year, 1940, she moved to the USA. There she worked as a journalist and wrote political articles for the German-Jewish weekly newspaper "Aufbau". From 1944 to 1946 she held the position of research director at the Conference on Jewish Relations. She then worked as an editor at Salman Schocken Verlag for three years. From 1948 to 1952 she was the head of the Jewish Cultural Reconstruction Organization, whose mission was to preserve Jewish cultural assets. In the two years 1949 and 1950 she visited Germany for the first time after the end of the war. In 1951 Hannah Arendt became an American citizen.
In the same year her major work "Origins of Totalitarianisme" was published. The treatise was published in Germany in 1955 under the title "Elements and Origins of Total Domination". In her studies of the conditions of totalitarianism in the 19th century, she linked these to the emergence of anti-Semitism and made comparisons between fascism and Stalinism. With this work she made a name for herself as a respected researcher on social and political science topics. In 1953 she accepted an appointment at Brooklyn College in New York. Hannah Arendt became a corresponding member of the German Academy for Language and Poetry in 1958. The following year she was honored by the city of Hamburg with the Lessing Prize. In 1960 her study "Vita activa or active life" was published. In her theory of action presented therein, she names work, production and action as three types of human activity.
In 1961 she reported on the Eichmann trial in Jerusalem for the New Yorker magazine. Her articles sparked controversial discussions because of her critical comments on the behavior of the Jewish councils and the portrayal of Adolf Eichmann. Arendt compiled these journalistic contributions into a book entitled "Eichmann in Jerusalem. A report on the banality of evil." The work was published in 1963, as was the title "On the Revolution", which is about the destruction of political rule. In 1963, Hannah Arendt accepted an appointment at the University of Chicago. In 1966 she met the writer Uwe Johnson. The following year she moved to the New School for Social Research in New York. In 1968 she headed the Institute of Arts and Letters as vice president. Two years later her work was edited with the title "Power and Violence". Hannah Arendt joined the board of the American PEN Center in 1973.

Born in New York City, raised in Arizona and California, educated at the University of Chicago, Harvard, Oxford and the Sorbonne, Susan Sontag constitutes a veritable challenge for any biographer. A novelist, philosopher, essayist, movie director and playwright, over the past thirty years she has been a controversial figure, too snobby for many of her critics, but always ready for a veritably "down to earth" engagement wherever and whenever human free expression is at stake (Vietnam, communist China, Bosnia).
Among her essays, which are by far her most complete aesthetic achievement, many are devoted to Film, either to single movies (like Bergman's "Persona", Godard's "Vivre sa vie", Syberberg's "Hitler, a Film from Germany", but also Chaplin's "The Dictator" and Kubrick's "Doctor Strangelove"), directors (Robert Bresson, Jean-Luc Godard, Leni Riefenstahl), or genders (Science Fiction). Her own films are deeply inspired by modernist style. The first two, Duet for Cannibals (1969) and Brother Carl (1971), both shot and produced in Sweden, bear clear influences of Bergman's reflections about the impossibility of human communication. Letter from Venice (1984) is an elegiac documentary of a mental tour of melancholia, while "Promised Lands" is a shocking documentary about Israel/Palestine that managed to outrage both the pro-Israelis and the pro-Palestinians at the time of its release in the mid 1970's. Since she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1975 (which she eventually overcame during several years of treatment), she has been involved in thinking and writing about the role of disease (TB, cancer, AIDS) in contemporary Western society.- Ida B. Wells was born in 1862 in Holly Springs, Mississippi, USA. She was married to Ferdinand L. Barnett. She died on 25 March 1931 in Chicago, Illinois, USA.

She later worked on a newspaper in Albany, NY, and struck up an acquaintance with Harry Hopkins, who was in charge of the US government's Emergency Relief Administration, and he commissioned her to do a survey of people who were on relief in urban industrial areas. After she turned in the results of that survey, she used parts of it as the basis for her next novel, "The Trouble I've Seen", for which famed author H.G. Wells wrote the introduction.
She was in Spain during the civil war in the late 1930s, covering it for a US magazine, when she met writer Ernest Hemingway. They became fast friends, and it was rumored that she was the inspiration for the lead character in his novel "The Fifth Column". Hemingway did dedicate his novel "For Whom the Bell Tolls" to her, and in 1940, after Hemingway obtained a divorce from his second wife--Gellhorn was by this time divorced from her husband--he married her.
She had been covering Czechoslovakia and Finland on assignment for "Collier's Weekly" magazine, and in 1941 she traveled to the Far East for the magazine (one of her journeys took her on the infamous Burma Road). Her novel "A Stricken Field", published in 1940, was about Czech refugees driven out of the country after it was taken over by Nazi Germany. The next year she published a book of short stories, "The Heart of Another", about the effects of the war on the people in Europe.
Martha Gellhorn died of cancer Feb. l6, 1998, in London, England. - Linda Greenhouse is known for We're Glad You're Here (2010), Reversing Roe (2018) and Frontline (1983). She has been married to Eugene R. Fidell since 1 January 1981.

Jessica Savitch was born on February 1, 1947 in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. Her father suddenly died when she was just 12 years old. It was he that encouraged her for a career in broadcast journalism. Jessica first considered a career in broadcasting while in high school. A friend then got her a job part-time reading the local news on the radio. When Jessica decided to major in communications at Ithaca College in New York, her faculty adviser bluntly told her that she was not part of broadcasting because she is a woman. His sexist words gave Jessica even more determination to prove him wrong. After graduation, Jessica became an all-around assistant for CBS-Radio in New York City. In 1971, she landed a job at KHOU-TV in Houston, Texas. Three months later, she enjoyed the distinction of becoming the first woman in the South to anchor a broadcast. In 1972, Jessica accepted a job to anchor the weekend newscast in Philadelphia. Over the next few years, Jessica slowly worked her way up and fought hard to be treated fairly in comparison to the other male anchors and correspondents. In 1977, Jessica signed a contract with New York's NBC station to anchor their Sunday evening broadcast, NBC Nightly News. She was then appointed co-anchor of Prime Time Sunday later that year. Jessica's rise to stardom inspired resentment among her colleagues who felt she hadn't paid her dues by first working as a network correspondent. However Jessica's rise to fame apparently came with a price as rumors about drug use and instability dogged her. Things came to a head on October 3, 1983 when, during a live news update, Jessica appeared incoherent in which her speech was slurred, she deviated from her copy and ad-libbed her report. She at first explained that her monitor had malfunctioned. But her agent inadvertently contradicted her alibi by saying that she was under medication from a head injury several weeks earlier. A short while later, Jessica seemed to get back on track for her contract at NBC was extended and she was ranked high on the list of replacements for Jane Pauley who was scheduled to take a maternity leave. But things came suddenly to an end when on Sunday, October 23, 1983, Jessica and her boyfriend, New York Post executive Martin Fischbein, drove to New Hope, Pennsylvania when they leisurely shopped for antiques. That evening, they ate dinner at the Chez Odette, a restaurant along the Delaware Canal. A fierce rainstorm set in and the couple became anxious to return to New York. Fischbein drove and Jessica sat in the back seat with her dog Chewy, a Siberian husky. The weather conditions made the driving difficult. Fischbein apparently mistook a dirt road for an exit and in a matter of seconds the car flipped off the road and plunged into the canal sinking almost instantly. Seven hours later, the bodies of 36-year-old Jessica Savitch and Martin Fischbein were pulled from the canal.- Actress
