by Warneinator | created - 28 Sep 2017 | updated - 18 Feb 2022 | Public

I have been a lifelong fan of Doctor Who. But recently I started to lose my passion for it. So to rediscover my spark for the show, I'm going back through every episode of the revived series, from 2005 to now, and I'll rank them all from favourite to least favourite.

1. Doctor Who (2005–2022)
Episode: The Parting of the Ways (2005)

As the Dalek fleet begin their attack on the Earth, the Doctor and his allies make one final stand.

Director: Joe Ahearne | Stars: Christopher Eccleston, Billie Piper, John Barrowman, Jo Stone-Fewings

Votes: 9,130

The Parting of the Ways is masterful television, which gives Christopher Eccleston quite possibly the best finale of any Doctor in the show's history, and has quite possibly the strongest depiction of the Daleks in the revived series.

2. Doctor Who (2005–2022)
Episode: Bad Wolf (2005)

TV-PG | 45 min | Adventure, Drama, Sci-Fi

The Doctor, Rose and Jack are separated and forced to compete in twisted and deadly games on the Game Station.

Director: Joe Ahearne | Stars: Christopher Eccleston, Billie Piper, John Barrowman, Jo Joyner

Votes: 8,526

While the presence of early 21st century gameshows somewhat dates the episode, Bad Wolf is a prescient examination of our society's obsession with reality television which signals the beginning of the end for Eccleston's time as the Doctor.

3. Doctor Who (2005–2022)
Episode: The Doctor Dances (2005)

TV-PG | 45 min | Adventure, Drama, Sci-Fi

The gas mask zombies are on the rise as the plague spreads across war-torn London.

Director: James Hawes | Stars: Christopher Eccleston, Billie Piper, Albert Valentine, Florence Hoath

Votes: 9,603

The Doctor Dances is a terrifying, heartfelt and surprisingly funny conclusion to the story started in The Empty Child, and is easily one of the best stories of the revived series.

4. Doctor Who (2005–2022)
Episode: The Empty Child (2005)

TV-PG | 45 min | Adventure, Drama, Sci-Fi

When a spaceship crashes in the middle of the London Blitz the Doctor, Rose and the enigmatic Captain Jack Harkness find themselves investigating a plague of physical injuries and a little boy in a gas mask.

Director: James Hawes | Stars: Christopher Eccleston, Billie Piper, Kate Harvey, Albert Valentine

Votes: 10,370

Despite only being the first part of a two-part story, The Empty Child is a wonderfully suspenseful episode with a great script.

5. Doctor Who (2005–2022)
Episode: The Girl in the Fireplace (2006)

TV-PG | 45 min | Adventure, Drama, Sci-Fi

The Doctor, Mickey and Rose land on a spaceship in the 51st century only to find 18th century Versailles on board, the time of Madame De Pompadour! To find out what's going on the Doctor must enter Versailles and save Madame De Popmpadour but it turns into an emotional roller coaster for the Doctor.

Director: Euros Lyn | Stars: David Tennant, Billie Piper, Noel Clarke, Sophia Myles

Votes: 12,741

A wonderfully heartbreaking love story making good use of the time travel concept, The Girl in the Fireplace is an utter delight, but can be also seen as Steven Moffat's prototype for Series 5.

6. Doctor Who (2005–2022)
Episode: Dalek (2005)

TV-PG | 45 min | Adventure, Drama, Sci-Fi

The TARDIS is drawn to an alien museum deep below the Utah desert, where a ruthless billionaire keeps prisoner the last of the Doctor's most fearsome enemies.

Director: Joe Ahearne | Stars: Christopher Eccleston, Billie Piper, Steven Beckingham, Corey Johnson

Votes: 9,160

Dalek is a powerful episode which does a fantastic job at taking apart every tired joke about the old pepperpots and making them terrifying again, with one of Christopher Eccleston's best performances as the 9th Doctor.

7. Doctor Who (2005–2022)
Episode: School Reunion (2006)

TV-PG | 45 min | Adventure, Drama, Sci-Fi

The Krillitanes - aliens with a mix-and-match physiology - are trying to crack the 'God-Maker', a paradigm to give them ultimate power. They are using children as a computer, and only the Doctor and Rose, re-united with Sarah Jane Smith and K9 can prevent them from becoming masters of time and space.

Director: James Hawes | Stars: David Tennant, Billie Piper, Noel Clarke, Anthony Head

Votes: 8,503

8. Doctor Who (2005–2022)
Episode: Father's Day (2005)

TV-PG | 45 min | Adventure, Drama, Sci-Fi

Rose asks The Doctor to take her to 1987, on the day her father was killed.

Director: Joe Ahearne | Stars: Christopher Eccleston, Billie Piper, Camille Coduri, Shaun Dingwall

Votes: 8,697

As an exploration into Rose Tyler's familial past, Father's Day ranks as one of Doctor Who's most emotional episodes.

9. Doctor Who (2005–2022)
Episode: The Impossible Planet (2006)

TV-PG | 45 min | Adventure, Drama, Sci-Fi

When the Doctor and Rose become stranded on a planet orbiting a black hole, they find a human expedition crew and their servants, the Ood, being terrorised by the Devil.

Votes: 8,751

11. Doctor Who (2005–2022)
Episode: The Unquiet Dead (2005)

TV-PG | 45 min | Adventure, Drama, Sci-Fi

The Doctor has great expectations for his latest adventure when he and Rose join forces with Charles Dickens to investigate a mysterious plague of zombies.

Director: Euros Lyn | Stars: Christopher Eccleston, Billie Piper, Alan David, Huw Rhys

Votes: 8,583

This is the episode that brought Doctor Who into the 21st Century in my eyes. The production, acting and storytelling for the revived series really feel like they come into their own in this episode.

12. Doctor Who (2005–2022)
Episode: Army of Ghosts (2006)

TV-PG | 45 min | Adventure, Drama, Sci-Fi

When ghosts of loved ones appear all over the world the Doctor traces the phenomena to the Torchwood Tower, where some old friends and enemies are waiting.

Director: Graeme Harper | Stars: David Tennant, Billie Piper, Camille Coduri, Noel Clarke

Votes: 7,784

13. Doctor Who (2005–2022)
Episode: Doomsday (2006)

TV-PG | 45 min | Adventure, Drama, Sci-Fi

Earth becomes a battleground for the Daleks and the Cybermen. With the whole planet at stake and the Genesis Ark activated, how much will the Doctor sacrifice in order to end the war?

Director: Graeme Harper | Stars: David Tennant, Billie Piper, Camille Coduri, Noel Clarke

Votes: 10,363

As the finale to series 2, Doomsday is a satisfying conclusion which delivers the ultimate fanservice in the form of the Daleks and the Cybermen going to war and hurling petty insults at each other. Yet like Army of Ghosts, it's a little too reliant on exposition, and Rose Tyler's departure doesn't emotionally resonate with me personally due to my dislike for the character during series 2.

14. Doctor Who (2005–2022)
Episode: Rose (2005)

TV-PG | 45 min | Adventure, Drama, Sci-Fi

When ordinary shop-worker Rose Tyler meets a mysterious stranger called the Doctor she is drawn into his strange and dangerous world; her life will never be the same again.

Director: Keith Boak | Stars: Christopher Eccleston, Billie Piper, Camille Coduri, Noel Clarke

Votes: 10,447

Although the episode's main threat is overshadowed by the number of characters that need establishing, this is a great return to form that still holds up almost 17 years later.

15. Doctor Who (2005–2022)
Episode: Tooth and Claw (2006)

TV-PG | 45 min | Adventure, Drama, Sci-Fi

The Doctor and Rose are transported to 19th Century Scotland, where they meet Queen Victoria, and try to protect her from a ravenous werewolf and a band of assassinating warrior-monks

Director: Euros Lyn | Stars: David Tennant, Billie Piper, Pauline Collins, Ian Hanmore

Votes: 8,022

Tooth and Claw is a very strong historical episode, with a great guest performance from Pauline Collins as Queen Victoria and a werewolf which still holds up today, only slightly bogged down by Rose's inappropriately toned bet.

16. Doctor Who (2005–2022)
Episode: The End of the World (2005)

TV-PG | 45 min | Adventure, Drama, Sci-Fi

The Doctor takes Rose on her first voyage through time, to the year five billion and the end of planet Earth.

Director: Euros Lyn | Stars: Christopher Eccleston, Billie Piper, Simon Paisley Day, Yasmin Bannerman

Votes: 9,190

The End of the World has some impressive production design and visual effects for 2005 and some beautiful scenes, sure not all of it holds up nowadays and parts of the narrative don't feel properly thought out but it's a strong first trip in the TARDIS.

17. Doctor Who (2005–2022)
Episode: Rise of the Cybermen (2006)

TV-PG | 45 min | Adventure, Drama, Sci-Fi

The TARDIS crash lands in London on a parallel world, where Rose's dad is still alive, people are disappearing off the streets and one of the Doctor's deadliest enemies is about to be reborn.

Director: Graeme Harper | Stars: David Tennant, Billie Piper, Camille Coduri, Noel Clarke

Votes: 7,564

18. Doctor Who (2005–2022)
Episode: Boom Town (2005)

TV-PG | 45 min | Adventure, Drama, Sci-Fi

Stopping off in present-day Cardiff to recharge the TARDIS, The Doctor, Rose and Jack meet up with Mickey and encounter an old foe in the midst of hatching a scheme that could destroy the entire planet.

Director: Joe Ahearne | Stars: Christopher Eccleston, Billie Piper, William Thomas, Annette Badland

Votes: 7,578

Boom Town's first 30 minutes are a surprisingly mature morality game with Annette Badland firing on all cylinders, but it's a shame that it chooses to cop out in its ending, not to mention it brings Rose's questionable treatment of Mickey to a head.

19. Doctor Who (2005–2022)
Episode: The Christmas Invasion (2005)

TV-PG | 60 min | Adventure, Drama, Sci-Fi

It's Christmas Eve, but this is to be a far from silent night - the cruel Sycorax have come to Earth to enslave mankind and, as ever, only The Doctor can stop them. Unfortunately, he's lying in a coma in Jackie's home...

Director: James Hawes | Stars: David Tennant, Billie Piper, Camille Coduri, Noel Clarke

Votes: 8,531

Doctor Who's first proper Christmas special is a mixed bag. The decision to have the Tenth Doctor incapacitated for most of the episode makes David Tennant's debut even more impactful, but the juxtaposition of killer Christmas with the near-suicide of one third of Earth's population is too tonally jarring for my tastes.

20. Doctor Who (2005–2022)
Episode: World War Three (2005)

TV-PG | 45 min | Adventure, Drama, Sci-Fi

The Slitheen have infiltrated Parliament and have the Doctor and his friends trapped as the Doctor works to prevent them from starting World War Three.

Director: Keith Boak | Stars: Christopher Eccleston, Billie Piper, David Verrey, Camille Coduri

Votes: 8,057

The 9/11 and government satire in World War Three is surprisingly poignant, plus Harriet Jones, MP for Flydale North is an absolute legend. But the tonal issues brought on by the Slitheen drag it down overall.

21. Doctor Who (2005–2022)
Episode: The Age of Steel (2006)

TV-PG | 45 min | Adventure, Drama, Sci-Fi

The Cybermen take control of London as the population is enslaved and the Doctor and his friends become fugitives.

Director: Graeme Harper | Stars: David Tennant, Billie Piper, Camille Coduri, Noel Clarke

Votes: 7,472

The Age of Steel unfortunately takes a lot of the wind out of its predecessor's sails due to its sluggish pace and unclear plotting, but serves as a very strong showcase for Mickey Smith's character development.

22. Doctor Who (2005–2022)
Episode: Aliens of London (2005)

TV-PG | 45 min | Adventure, Drama, Sci-Fi

The Doctor returns Rose to her own time - well, sort of - but her family reunion is ruined when a spaceship crashes in the middle of London. What is the origin of the spaceship, and where has the Prime Minister gone in this time of crisis?

Director: Keith Boak | Stars: Christopher Eccleston, Billie Piper, Camille Coduri, Corey Doabe

Votes: 8,320

The London part of Aliens of London is handled really well, but it's unfortunately hurt by the juvenile tone brought on by the Slitheen's farting.

23. Doctor Who (2005–2022)
Episode: The Long Game (2005)

TV-PG | 45 min | Adventure, Drama, Sci-Fi

In the year 200,000 the Doctor discovers that a satellite with a dark secret is controlling humanity and slowing its development.

Director: Brian Grant | Stars: Christopher Eccleston, Billie Piper, Bruno Langley, Colin Prockter

Votes: 7,935

The Long Game is a very fitting title, because this is an episode, which, despite containing a great performance from Simon Pegg as The Editor, never really feels like it comes alive because of the wonky pacing, not to mention Adam Mitchell.

24. Doctor Who (2005–2022)
Episode: Love & Monsters (2006)

TV-PG | 45 min | Adventure, Drama, Sci-Fi

Elton Pope is an ordinary man intrigued by the world of the Doctor. When he and fellow enthusiasts - L.I.N.D.A. - meet the mysterious Victor Kennedy, their lives will never be the same again.

Director: Dan Zeff | Stars: David Tennant, Billie Piper, Camille Coduri, Peter Kay

Votes: 8,852

Love & Monsters isn't quite as bad as its reputation suggests, the idea of an episode centred around ordinary people in the Doctor Who universe is actually novel and Peter Kay is a lot of fun as Victor Kennedy/The Abzorbaloff, but the tone is all over the place and the sex joke during the ending is still cringeworthy.

25. Doctor Who (2005–2022)
Episode: The Idiot's Lantern (2006)

TV-PG | 45 min | Adventure, Drama, Sci-Fi

As the coronation of Elizabeth II nears, the streets of London live in fear. Faceless people are stolen from their homes in the night and something evil is lurking in the television.

Director: Euros Lyn | Stars: David Tennant, Billie Piper, Maureen Lipman, Ron Cook

Votes: 7,647

Normally, I would write The Idiot's Lantern off as a middling episode with a few decent moments of darkness for the Tenth Doctor, but it's ending's refusal to outright condemn Mr. Connelly's treatment of his son and have Rose encourage Tommy to go back to him seriously struck a nerve with me.

26. Doctor Who (2005–2022)
Episode: New Earth (2006)

TV-PG | 45 min | Adventure, Drama, Sci-Fi

The Doctor and Rose arrive on New Earth and meet old friends and enemies in a hospital which can cure every disease. But the cures come at a terrible cost.

Director: James Hawes | Stars: David Tennant, Billie Piper, Camille Coduri, Noel Clarke

Votes: 7,964

Much like The Christmas Invasion, New Earth suffers from a tonal crisis. It's hard to take the walking lepers and the attempt at a poignant ending seriously when you have David Tennant and Billie Piper's ridiculously hammy performances when they're possessed by Cassandra, and it ultimately gets Series 2 off to a shaky start.

27. Doctor Who (2005–2022)
Episode: Fear Her (2006)

TV-PG | 45 min | Adventure, Drama, Sci-Fi

When children vanish into thin air in 2012 London, the Doctor and Rose find the answers in a seemingly ordinary household and a girl whose drawings can come to life.

Director: Euros Lyn | Stars: David Tennant, Billie Piper, Nina Sosanya, Abisola Agbaje

Votes: 7,904

A bottle episode made to take the place of an overexpensive script by Stephen Fry, Fear Her is truly as dire as its reputation suggests. Whilst the effects for the scribble monster are laughably terrible, the episode also suffers from overly broad characterisation of the Doctor and a weak supporting cast, not to mention the ending denouement is especially cheesy even for this show's standards.

28. Doctor Who (2005–2022)
Episode: The Runaway Bride (2006)

TV-PG | 60 min | Adventure, Drama, Sci-Fi

The Doctor is baffled when a young woman is transported to the TARDIS on her wedding day, and attempts to find out how she is connected to an alien plot to destroy Earth.

Director: Euros Lyn | Stars: David Tennant, Catherine Tate, Sarah Parish, Don Gilet

Votes: 8,028
