Horror movies of 2018
A list of my most-anticipated horror movies of 2018.
My rating's and/or a review below each one that I've seen - the list will be updated daily.
When you see a "Gonna skip this one" written under a title, that means that the movie has come out & is available for watching, but I'm not planning on seeing it.
Some of these are set for release/released in 2016 or 2017, but they're on this list because theatrical, VOD and/or DVD releases for them are set in 2018 (I don't count festival-circuit releases).
For example: "Mom and Dad" premiered at festivals in 2017 but VOD release (a.k.a. the moment when I get my hands on the movie) is set in January 19th.

Recently I've created a new list - "Horror movies of 2019", where I also moved a few ones from this list, the ones that are most definitely not coming out in 2018 & also added a few new ones that weren't on this list before.

- DirectorAdam RobitelStarsLin ShayeLeigh WhannellAngus SampsonParapsychologist Dr. Elise Rainier faces her most fearsome and personal haunting yet, as she is drawn back to her ghostly childhood home where the terror began.Falls well below the franchise's standarts. Too much comedy - the work of the studio, I imagine. The villain (main demon) was a bit of a letdown. The story's okay, ties in with other parts nicely, but it wasn't half as scary or entertaining as the 1st three parts. 5/10
- DirectorTyler MacIntyreStarsBrianna HildebrandAlexandra ShippJack QuaidA twist on the slasher genre, following two death-obsessed teenage girls who use their online show about real-life tragedies to send their small mid-western town into a frenzy, and cement their legacy as modern horror legends.Got available world-wide in January 23th, 2018.
A modern slasher comedy that's something between "Scream" and "The Final Girls". It's very appealing and quite enjoyable but also easily forgetable. Want a fun watch for the sunday evening? Go for it. 6/10 - DirectorHèctor Hernández VicensStarsSophie SkeltonJohnathon SchaechJeff GumA small group of military personnel and survivalists dwell in an underground bunker as they seek to find a cure in a world overrun by zombies.Gonna skip this one.
- DirectorMatt AngelSuzanne CooteStarsDylan MinnettePiercey DaltonPatricia BethuneA teenager and his mother find themselves besieged by threatening forces when they move into a new house.Gonna skip this one.
- DirectorSean CarterStarsBella ThorneChandler RiggsIoan GruffuddA family become imprisoned in their home by intruders who force them to play a life and death game where the mysterious rules become clear as the night unfolds.Became available world-wide in February 5th, 2018.
Gonna skip this one. - DirectorBrian TaylorStarsNicolas CageSelma BlairAnne WintersA teenage girl and her younger brother must survive a wild 24 hours during which a mass hysteria of unknown origin causes parents to turn violently on their own kids.Got available world-wide in January 19th, 2018.
A definiton of "guilty pleasure". Batshit crazy black comedy with a story line that's non existant. Who gives a fuck? It's parents killing kids? It's the Nic Cage you've been dying to see! Very well shot movie. Approach with caution and low expectations. 7/10 - DirectorAdam GreenStarsParry ShenKane HodderLaura OrtizTen years after the events of the original movie, Victor Crowley is mistakenly resurrected and proceeds to kill once more.Got available world-wide in January 28th, 2018.
I didn't expect much but it's actually better than the 2nd and 3rd parts. I think it's obvious that this has the least production value, but it also got the better script. Funny and grindhous-ey as shit. Only for horror dope fiends. 6/10 - DirectorJulius OnahStarsGugu Mbatha-RawDavid OyelowoDaniel BrühlOrbiting a planet on the brink of war, scientists test a device to solve an energy crisis, and end up face-to-face with a dark alternate reality.Whoa, what? 1st of all, it's barely a "Cloverfield" movie, references are quite forced. 2nd of all, most theories (the praising ones) are bullshit. 3rd of all, it's like a very average "Black Mirror" episode. Huge disappointment. Just another sci-fi drama. 5/10
- DirectorDavid BrucknerStarsRafe SpallArsher AliRobert James-CollierA group of old college friends reunite for a trip to a most dangerous country in Europe - Sweden, encountering a menacing presence there stalking them.Became available world-wide in February 5th, 2018.
The 1st half is really good - mysterious, moody, atmospheric horror with the spooky swedish forest setting. The 2nd half is very predictable and loses half of the charm. Overall it's a very good looking, well acted, well directed supernatural horror flick. 7/10 - DirectorMarc MeyersStarsRoss LynchAlex WolffAnne HecheA young Jeffrey Dahmer struggles to belong in high school.Became available world-wide in February 6th, 2018.
Cons: Slow, a bit over-long, zero action & a teeny tiny bit dissapointing finale. Pros: Superb acting, fascinating character of a growing-up serial killer, mostly a completely true story & the fucked up part of you knowing the future truth about the main character. 7/10 - DirectorMiguel Ángel VivasStarsRachel NicholsLaura HarringBen TempleA woman in her third trimester of pregnancy is stalked by a stranger who is obsessed with her unborn child.Became available world-wide in January 12th, 2018
A very unnecessary remake & a definite failure, less extreme than the original, less dynamic, less entertaining, less in fuckin everything. The portrayal of the police is the dumbest ever & it's completely unjustified. You'll probably enjoy it if u haven't seen the original. 3/10 - DirectorPascal LaugierStarsCrystal ReedMylène FarmerAnastasia PhillipsA mother of two who inherits a house is confronted with murderous intruders on the first night in their new home and fights for her daughters' lives. Sixteen years later when the daughters reunite at the house, things get really strange.Went to the cinema expecting something mellow, got surprised a lot and saw great combination of "Martyrs" and every Rob Zombie film out there. It's scary, brutal (maybe even too brutal) keeps you guessing & does make complete sense in the end. Awesome acting. 8/10
- DirectorAdam MacDonaldStarsLaurie HoldenNicole MuñozChloe RoseA frustrated, angst-ridden teenage girl awakens something in the woods when she naively performs an occult ritual to evoke a witch to kill her mother.Cons: Very slow, the plot is quite narrow, no gore. Pros: Well-acted, very atmospheric, can manage to creep you out with no gore, definitely a great piece of occult-themed horror. After this & "Backcountry" I expect something good out of the director. 7/10
- DirectorPaco PlazaStarsSandra EscacenaBruna GonzálezClaudia PlacerMadrid, 1991. A teen girl finds herself besieged by an evil supernatural force after she played Ouija with two classmates.Became available world-wide in March, 2018.
One of the better modern possesion/religion/etc. horror movies out there - it's good looking, has a few good scares, is acted well enough and, well, it's a very enjoyable flick but nowhere near as good as Facebook campaign told you. 7/10 - DirectorJohannes RobertsStarsChristina HendricksMartin HendersonBailee MadisonA family of four staying at a secluded mobile home park for the night are stalked and then hunted by three masked psychopaths.Went in with low expectations, so actually enjoyed it quite a bit. The 1st half drags and makes you think that this will be nothing but dissapointment, but the 2nd half picks up a bit and provides with one quite memorable sequence. Decent enough slasher. 6/10
- DirectorJason HenneChristopher LetoStarsAshley Nicole AllenLibby BlakeMichael Ray DavisA group of coeds goes looking for fun at a cabin on the lake, but find out that the cabin wasn't always used for rest and relaxation.Became available world-wide in February 5th, 2018.
Saving this for that day, when I'll want something really whack... - DirectorMichael SpierigPeter SpierigStarsHelen MirrenSarah SnookFinn Scicluna-O'PreyEnsconced in her sprawling San Jose, California mansion, eccentric firearm heiress Sarah Winchester (Dame Helen Mirren) believes she is haunted by the souls of people killed by the Winchester repeating rifle.Interesting premise, intriguing characters, awesome locations, lots of potential - all ruined by mediocre dorection and even worse script. It starts out good & slowly descends into a generic piece og hollywood horror crap. Overall it can be barely called "mediocre". 5/10
- DirectorCoralie FargeatStarsMatilda Anna Ingrid LutzKevin JanssensVincent ColombeNever take your mistress on an annual guys' getaway, especially one devoted to hunting - a violent lesson for three wealthy married men.Got available worl-wide in April, 2018.
Rape-revenge horror movies are not as good nowadays, but this one is quite a milestone in the particular sub-genre. While it could've been shorter, it's a very good looking piece & has all the elements needed to fit the sub-genre or rape/revenge. 8/10 - DirectorGary J. TunnicliffeStarsDamon CarneyRandy WayneAlexandra HarrisDetectives Sean and David Carter are on the case to find a gruesome serial killer terrorizing the city. Joining forces with Detective Christine Egerton, they dig deeper into a spiraling maze of horror that may not be of this world.Haven't seen all the prequels, so this will have to wait.
- DirectorMarcel WalzStarsRobert RuslerCaroline WilliamsSophie MonkAfter having moved to France, Fuad works night shifts at a museum for Egyptian culture. During long nights, he is repeatedly drawn to a statue representing the seductive ancient goddess Ishtar and becomes allured by her visions.Got available world-wide in February 1st, 2018.
- DirectorDylan ReynoldsStarsJamie BernadetteVanessa ReynoldsStacey DangerFive women go camping in the woods to celebrate a friend's birthday over 4/20 weekend, but when they cross the turf of an illegal marijuana grow-operation, they must fight to survive the living nightmare. As a stoner & horror movie addict I should probably watch this one evening...
- DirectorJohn KrasinskiStarsEmily BluntJohn KrasinskiMillicent SimmondsA family struggles for survival in a world invaded by alien creatures with ultra-sensitive hearing. It's a rare phenomena - a new horror that has a rating above 8.0 on IMDb. This time I feel like it's not justified. It's a solid, suspenseful, good-looking horror that, in my opinion, lacks depth. Because of the critical acclaim I was hyped for something I never got. 8/10
- DirectorTed GeogheganStarsKaniehtiio HornEzra BuzzingtonEamon FarrenLate in the War of 1812, a young Mohawk woman and her two lovers battle a squad of American soldiers hell-bent on revenge.Became available world-wide in February 22, 2018.
- DirectorXavier GensStarsRay StevensonDavid OakesAura GarridoA young man arrives at a remote island to take a post of weather observer only to find himself defending the watchtower from deadly creatures which live in the island shores.Became available world-wide in February 15, 2018.
It's what they call "Lovecraftian" horror - rightly so. While there's not much story & little answers to your questions, it's a good looking, decently acted action-ey horror, without a real scare factor tho. The setting is real nice, that's the candy here. 6/10 - DirectorBrian O'MalleyStarsCharlotte VegaBill MilnerEugene SimonA family curse confines orphaned twins Rachel and Edwards to their home, in punishment for their ancestors' sins. Bound to the rules of a haunting childhood lullaby, the twins must never let any outsiders inside the house.Became available world-wide in February 23, 2018.
Gonna skip this one.
