- DirectorShane BlackStarsRussell CroweRyan GoslingAngourie RiceIn 1970s Los Angeles, a mismatched pair of private eyes investigate a missing girl and the mysterious death of a porn star.Nothing will top this, seriously this is one of the greatest movies I've ever seen. Yes the acting was good and Jackson Healy and Holland March are two PHENOMENAL and likeable main characters but the real stars of the show are Shane Black and Anthony Bagarozzi as this is the best screenplay I've seen in a movie in YEARS, even more than great movies like 'The Hateful Eight' and 'Nightcrawler'. If this movie starred Samuel L. Jackson, I would honestly feel like I'm watching a Tarantino movie, it's certainly good enough to be one, it's up there with some of his best work. This movie is legitimately flawless. A modern masterpiece in every sense of the word. A* (5/5)
- DirectorByron HowardRich MooreJared BushStarsGinnifer GoodwinJason BatemanIdris ElbaIn a city of anthropomorphic animals, a rookie bunny cop and a cynical con artist fox must work together to uncover a conspiracy.I wasn't expecting anything, what i actually got was one of Disney's best in the near 80 years they've been in the game. It had a great cast of characters, clever animation and a story about overcoming prejudice which wasn't cheesey, this film is SO close to perfect A (4.9/5)
- DirectorRon ClementsJohn MuskerDon HallStarsAuli'i CravalhoDwayne JohnsonRachel HouseIn ancient Polynesia, when a terrible curse incurred by the demigod Maui reaches Moana's island, she answers the Ocean's call to seek out Maui to set things right.Wow, I thought 'Zootopia' would be Disney's peak for a number of years but they nearly outdid themselves just 6 months later! What a movie this was with likeable characters (Moana possibly being my favourite Disney princess ever) beautiful animation, a touching story and quite possibly, the best soundtrack in Disney history. Even being this close to perfect and this movie making me being the happiest whilst watching a movie I've been in YEARS, I can't believe this didn't take my number 1! A (4.8/5)
- DirectorAnthony RussoJoe RussoStarsChris EvansRobert Downey Jr.Scarlett JohanssonPolitical involvement in the Avengers' affairs causes a rift between Captain America and Iron Man.Even though I enjoyed my most anticipated movies from other years ('Iron Man 3', 'Godzilla' and 'Age of Ultron') I didn't like them as much as I wanted to. This came VERY close to meeting my ridiculous expectations. I honestly loved every second and unlike most superhero movies I was completely invested in the plot. A (4.7/5)
- DirectorJames WanStarsVera FarmigaPatrick WilsonMadison WolfeEd and Lorraine Warren travel to North London to help a single mother raising four children alone in a house plagued by a supernatural spirit.I enjoyed the original and went into this expecting a decent horror movie that was slightly less good than the original. What I actually got was a sequel that surpassed the original in every way, I enjoyed it more, I was more invested in the characters and the storyline and most importantly, it was scarier. A (4.5/5)
- DirectorThea SharrockStarsEmilia ClarkeSam ClaflinJanet McTeerA girl in a small town forms an unlikely bond with a recently-paralyzed man she's taking care of.I'm not a romcom person at all, but this was genuinely stunning. The characters were incredible thanks to brilliant acting. The genuine plot and the relationship between Lou and Will was moving, I was completely locked in from start to finish and even though I had a feeling what would happen, the ending did make me cry. A (4.5/5)
- DirectorM. Night ShyamalanStarsJames McAvoyAnya Taylor-JoyHaley Lu RichardsonThree girls are kidnapped by a man with a diagnosed 23 distinct personalities. They must try to escape before the apparent emergence of a frightful new 24th.Wow. This was very good! I really did enjoy the supporting cast's performances in this, I thought Anya Taylor-Joy was very good as Casey and Betty Buckley as the psychiatrist, and the plot of the film where - despite only having one kidnapper, the girls are essentially held captive by 23 people - was very creative. Of course though, the real star of the show is James McAvoy. He absolutely knocked it out of the park as Kevin and his 23 personalities, really showcasing an incredible range. The only gripe I had with the film was its realistic tone (which personally, I really love) was dampened in the third act when Kevin's 24th personality is uncovered (which I won't spoil). Otherwise, this was a great film and one of Shyamalan's best in my opinion. A (4.5/5)
- DirectorTim MillerStarsRyan ReynoldsMorena BaccarinT.J. MillerA wisecracking mercenary gets experimented on and becomes immortal yet hideously scarred, and sets out to track down the man who ruined his looks.I didn't expect to enjoy this as much as I did, I honestly couldn't find a flaw with this movie (until I rewatched it and realised it isn't as good the second time round). It did everything it was meant to do and it did it excellently. This was just the second movie I saw in 2016, and walking out of that cinema, I thought nothing could top it! A- (4.4/5)
- DirectorJon FavreauStarsNeel SethiBill MurrayBen KingsleyAfter a threat from the tiger Shere Khan forces him to flee the jungle, a man-cub named Mowgli embarks on a journey of self discovery with the help of panther Bagheera and free-spirited bear Baloo. What a surprise this was. I was expecting a cheese-fest but I adored it. The kid playing Mowgoli was excellent and all the characters in the movie were just as good as they were in the animated disney version with Shere Khan still being my favourite and it was very entertaining! A- (4.3/5)
- DirectorAndrew StantonAngus MacLaneStarsEllen DeGeneresAlbert BrooksEd O'NeillFriendly but forgetful blue tang Dory begins a search for her long-lost parents and everyone learns a few things about the real meaning of family along the way.Pixar have done it again with this heartfelt animation. Yes, it's not as good as 'Finding Nemo' but it's still well above average with impeccable animation, a sweet story about Dory looking for her parents, an incredible cast of characters (both old and new) and being very entertaining (especially for me as 'Finding Nemo' was the first film I ever saw in the cinema when I was just 3 years old) A- (4.1/5)
- DirectorIlya NaishullerStarsSharlto CopleyTim RothHaley BennettHenry is resurrected from death with no memory, and he must save his wife from a telekinetic warlord with a plan to bio-engineer soldiers.Easily the most entertaining movie of the year, I had a great time and I like the idea of it all being in first person. This would be higher if Henry had more depth (I know he had to be a cyborg in order to make the movie work as if he wasn't he'd be dead pretty early on in the movie) but he did feel like a weak main character, otherwise, it was great. A- (4.1/5)
- DirectorBo BurnhamChristopher StorerStarsBo BurnhamBo Burnham tackles life, death, sexuality, hypocrisy, mental illness and Pringles cans in his dazzling new stand-up special.I don't care what you think, I'm counting this because I can, without the Kanye part dragging on for an eighth of it's run time, this would be easily in the top 5, I loved it. A- (4.1/5)
- DirectorAlessandro CarloniJennifer Yuh NelsonStarsJack BlackBryan CranstonDustin HoffmanContinuing his "legendary adventures of awesomeness", Po must face two hugely epic, but different threats: one supernatural and the other a little closer to home.A Very enjoyable animation courtesy of Dreamworks. The animation was fantastic, as to be expected from Dreamworks and I liked the story of Po becoming the dragon warrior. I liked that the movie focused a lot on the relationship between Po and his father but I wish that the reoccurring characters (outside of Po and Crane) had more screen time. A- (4/5)
- DirectorDavid F. SandbergStarsTeresa PalmerGabriel BatemanMaria BelloRebecca must unlock the terror behind her little brother's experiences that once tested her sanity, bringing her face to face with a supernatural spirit attached to their mother.I like the concept of the film and it's executed pretty well. Whilst this film isn't pushing any boundaries in terms of a new peak for the genre but it's a breath of fresh air as the scares aren't all false jump-scares and build tension nicely and I liked characters like Rebecca and Martin. The performances are also pretty good by the horror genre standards, especially Gabriel Bateman as Martin. It's also very entertaining B (3.8/5)
- DirectorPeter BergStarsMark WahlbergKurt RussellDouglas M. GriffinA dramatization of the disaster in April 2010, when the offshore drilling rig called the Deepwater Horizon exploded, resulting in the worst oil spill in American history. This is a good, fun disaster movie with a solid cast and an enthralling story. All in all, this is a good film with elements of greatness like the visual effects and the direction. It's also a very fun film B (3.8/5)
- DirectorJustin LinStarsChris PineZachary QuintoKarl UrbanThe crew of the USS Enterprise explores the furthest reaches of uncharted space, where they encounter a new ruthless enemy, who puts them, and everything the Federation stands for, to the test.Enjoyable Sci-Fi flick, but I do think it's the weakest film in the reboot so far as I did feel less invested in the story this time round but with great characters (Scotty and Spock being my favourites) good action directed by Justin Lin and of course, being entertaining, it's still a good movie overall B (3.8/5)
- DirectorGareth EdwardsStarsFelicity JonesDiego LunaAlan TudykIn a time of conflict, a group of unlikely heroes band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire's ultimate weapon of destruction.I don't see where all the praise is coming from. Yes the film is well directed, yes Felicity Jones is great as Jin and the story is good and connects the prequels and the originals well, but this film did bore me at times and the only new character I care about is K-2S0. Not as bad as the prequels but it doesn't hold a candle to the originals or even 'The Force Awakens' B- (3.5/5)
- DirectorNicholas StollerStarsSeth RogenRose ByrneZac EfronWhen their new next-door neighbors turn out to be a sorority even more debaucherous than the fraternity that lived there before, Mac and Kelly team with their former enemy, Teddy, to bring the girls down.I liked the first movie a lot, but after 'Zoolander 2', I had no idea what to expect. Thankfully, this is one of the better comedy sequels I've seen as it's nearly as good as the original with the returning characters (Teddy in particular) getting better. B- (3.5/5)
- DirectorScott DerricksonStarsBenedict CumberbatchChiwetel EjioforRachel McAdamsWhile on a journey of physical and spiritual healing, a brilliant neurosurgeon is drawn into the world of the mystic arts.To be honest, if anything I felt like this got TOO much credit. Don't get me wrong, it was still a decent watch and I'm looking forward to seeing how they integrate Strange into the MCU, mainly due to how good Benedict Cumberbatch is as Stephen Strange. The first act drags quite a lot, until Ancient One comes in and some of the jokes do fall a little flat. Certainly not bad, but not one of my highlights in the MCU (it's no 'Winter Soldier' or 'Guardians of the Galaxy') C+ (3.4/5)
- DirectorAkiva SchafferJorma TacconeStarsAndy SambergJorma TacconeAkiva SchafferWhen it becomes clear that his solo album is a failure, a former boy band member does everything in his power to maintain his celebrity status.I had no idea what to expect here, but it looks like Andy Samberg still has potential as all around this was a pretty good movie. It had it's fair share of laughs and Connor was actually a pretty good lead character who I cared about. C+ (3.4/5)
- DirectorBryan SingerStarsJames McAvoyMichael FassbenderJennifer LawrenceIn the 1980s, the X-Men must defeat an ancient all-powerful mutant, En Sabah Nur, who intends to thrive by bringing destruction to the world.I was sceptical about this as we had two generations of actors in this movie, and it was entertaining but it was very flawed. For example, this may seem like a nitpick but Wolverine being in Stryker's possession contradicts the ending of Days Of Future Past and Mystique is in human form in most scenes even though she's written as this "mutant and proud" character. Also, Quicksilver's scene in the mansion was very disappointing and Apocalypse wasn't the best villain. That being said, Magneto still remains awesome (even if Fassbender fails to live up to the exceptionally high standards of Ian McKellen) and I like the new, younger cast like Tye Sheridan as Cyclops and it was entertaining C (3.25/5)
- DirectorDuncan JonesStarsTravis FimmelPaula PattonBen FosterAs an Orc horde invades the planet Azeroth using a magic portal, a few human heroes and dissenting Orcs must attempt to stop the true evil behind this war.Despite being far from the best movie ever made, this very enjoyable fantasy flick has restored my hope in video game movies. I'd put this up there with the original 'Mortal Kombat' and 'Silent Hill' for my favourite video game movies. Very enjoyable with a solid cast of Orc characters. The humans however...they're a different story. C (3.2/5)
- DirectorJohn HillcoatStarsCasey AffleckChiwetel EjioforAnthony MackieA gang of criminals and corrupt cops plan the murder of a police officer in order to pull off their biggest heist yet across town.Whilst the action and cast were very solid in this, I can't give it a higher score because it's so predictable and it's just so similar to other heist movies and whilst the actors in the movie are very good, the actual characters themselves are bland and generic. I wouldn't go out of my way to watch this again but it's still a decent film. C (3.15/5)
- DirectorLouis LeterrierStarsSacha Baron CohenMark StrongRebel WilsonA new assignment forces a top spy to team up with his football hooligan brother.Yes, the plot was pretty lacklustre and the acting wasn't Oscar-winning but it had it's fair share of laughs (even if some were a bit disgusting like the elephant scene) and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't entertained. C- (3.1/5)
- DirectorLev L. SpiroStarsAlan RitchsonDarin BrooksJames CadeWhen the Dean of Blue Mountain State threatens to sell the Goat House, Alex throws Thad the party of his dreams in an effort to get him to buy it.And now, we have a movie I was expecting to be awful. This was actually pretty funny and had a cast of interesting characters. But the story and acting were a little sub-par. C- (3/5)
