Annoying as HECK movie posters 〴⋋_⋌〵
When you go into a video [rental] store, what's the very first thing you see?
COVERS! Tons & tons of DVD covers - some of them grab your attention, others you're glad they don't grab your attention.
They used to be very creative & artist back in the day especially when DREW STRUZAN, a relatively unknown paint artist, created them. But nowadays they seem to lose their flavor - just lazily posting celebrity faces together, sucking out all the epic quality. When you look at old time posters, especially Drew Struzan's (with the likes of Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Hook, Hellboy, Blade Runner, Harry Potter , Back to the Future, etc) you could get the idea they were trying to tell a story , and they wanted to share that story with us!
Now, I'm not saying ALL movie posters should be done by Drew, but they should at least LEARN a good example from his designer technique.
When you look at poster today, all you see is an AD, a lazy marketing tool that just wanted you to buy TICKETS. Now granted, this IS what a poster is supposed to do, but it's also supposed to DISGUISE that fact, and many posters just don't seem to do that anymore. What about the "SHREK" poster?? All they're doing is SITTING there (in most of them) (Woooo, I guess?)
And how many times have we seen just one egotistical FACE take up the entire poster? A lot of them quite unsurprisingly like Jennifer Lawrence, Tom Cruise, Amanda Seyfriend, Hugh Grant, Reese Witherspoon, Julia Roberts, and Nicolas Cage. These posters don't tell us what the movie's about; they just suck, they don't even give us a reason to SEE the film, outside the fact they have a celebrity who obviously got top-billing.
Whether these films are good or not is another issue, but most of these films are ones I particularly DISLIKE anyway, though some are okay.
