Face-off: Exaggerated Acting vs Undercooked Acting

There are many different reasons why an acting performance can be considered poor. Two of these reasons are because an actor may give too much or too little on screen.

Sometimes it's funny to see an actor give an over-the-top and hammy performance, whereas other times we wish the character they played just stayed in the background where they belong, like a brick wall.

So in general, which do you prefer, if you had to choose - chewing the scenery or being the scenery?
