- DirectorGareth EvansStarsDan StevensRichard ElfynPaul HigginsIn 1905, a drifter on a dangerous mission to rescue his kidnapped sister tangles with a sinister religious cult on an isolated island.Atmospheric, pretty creepy, rather gruesome and somewhat disturbing.
- DirectorTim MillerStarsRyan ReynoldsMorena BaccarinT.J. MillerA wisecracking mercenary gets experimented on and becomes immortal yet hideously scarred, and sets out to track down the man who ruined his looks. It was okay, I chuckled a few times, but I don't get the hype.
- DirectorSteven SoderberghStarsGeorge ClooneyNatascha McElhoneUlrich TukurA troubled psychologist is sent to investigate the crew of an isolated research station orbiting a bizarre planet. It was... okay. Really sad in some parts and a nice twist, but there was still a weird detachment to it.
- DirectorAdam GreenStarsRay WiseAdam GreenWill BarrattA documentary exploring genre based monster art takes an odd turn when the filmmakers are contacted by a man who claims he can prove that monsters are indeed real.Doesn't amount to a whole lot, but an okay fun ride. Ray Wise is great.
- DirectorDemián RugnaStarsMaximiliano GhioneNorberto GonzaloElvira OnettoWhen strange events occur in a neighborhood in Buenos Aires, a doctor specializing in the paranormal, her colleague, and an ex police officer decide to investigate further.Weird little movie.
- DirectorJoe DanteStarsDennis QuaidMartin ShortMeg RyanA test pilot is miniaturized in a secret experiment, and accidentally injected into a hapless store clerk.A rewatch, hadn't seen it for nearly 30 years. Still fun.
- DirectorFelix van GroeningenStarsSteve CarellMaura TierneyJack Dylan GrazerBased on the best-selling pair of memoirs from father and son David and Nic Sheff, Beautiful Boy chronicles the heartbreaking and inspiring experience of survival, relapse and recovery in a family coping with addiction over many years. Not AS heartwrenching as I'd expected it to be, but still very good. Of course, the scenes between Steve Carell and Timothée Chalamet were outstanding.
- DirectorJohn R. LeonettiStarsJoey KingRyan PhillippeKi Hong LeeA teenage girl discovers a box that carries magic powers and a deadly price for using them. Not good, but wasn't bored.
- DirectorChristopher LandonStarsJessica RotheIsrael BroussardRuby ModineA college student must relive the day of her murder over and over again, in a loop that will end only when she discovers her killer's identity.Quite funny.
- DirectorDaniel FarrandsStarsJohn RobinsonChelsea RickettsPaul Ben-VictorOn the night of November 13, 1974, Ronald DeFeo, Jr. took a high-powered rifle and murdered his entire family as they slept. At his trial, DeFeo claimed that "voices" in the house commanded him to kill. This is their story. Not too bad, actually.
- DirectorGregory PlotkinStarsCynthea MercadoStephen ConroyAmy ForsythA masked serial killer turns a horror-themed amusement park into his own personal playground, terrorizing a group of friends while the rest of the patrons believe that it is all part of the show.Wow, that was an unexpectedly pleasant surprise. It had all the makings of a movie I'd hate, but it was very atmospheric, surprisingly funny and tender (yes!), and all the main characters - including the dudebro-ish guy and the normally bitchy girl - were really likeable. You actually didn't want any of them to die.
- CreatorLeslye HeadlandNatasha LyonneAmy PoehlerStarsNatasha LyonneCharlie BarnettGreta LeeA cynical young woman in New York City keeps dying and returning to the party that's being thrown in her honor on that same evening. She tries to find a way out of this strange time loop.Very funny and surprisingly sweet and creepy.
- DirectorDean AliotoStarsBenz AntoineKristian AyreGillian BarberAfter a mysterious blackout, a son goes out to investigate and captures footage of actual aliens. When the aliens follow him and his brothers back to their home, all hell breaks loose.Unexpectedly tense and creepy, and it did a very good job of making me hate the racist brother. F**k that guy!
- DirectorNicholas McCarthyStarsTaylor SchillingJackson Robert ScottPeter MooneyA mother concerned about her young son's disturbing behavior thinks something supernatural may be affecting him.Surprisingly good. One of the better possessed/evil kids movies. It was neither a jumpscarepalooza nor a special effects extravaganza; it was actually pretty subtle most of the time with only a few jolts.
- DirectorBill WattersonStarsMeera Rohit KumbhaniNick ThuneAdam BuschDave, an artist who has yet to complete anything significant in his career, builds a fort in his living room out of pure frustration, only to wind up trapped by the fantastical pitfalls, booby traps, and critters of his own creation.Totally bonkers.
- DirectorAnna BodenRyan FleckStarsBrie LarsonSamuel L. JacksonBen MendelsohnCarol Danvers becomes one of the universe's most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races.Better than I expected.
- CreatorDave CaplanBruce HelfordBruce RasmussenStarsJohn GoodmanLaurie MetcalfSara GilbertFollow-up to the comedy series Roseanne (1988), centering on the family members of the matriarch after her sudden death.Fine-ish.
- DirectorJordan PeeleStarsDaniel KaluuyaAllison WilliamsBradley WhitfordA young African-American visits his white girlfriend's parents for the weekend, where his simmering uneasiness about their reception of him eventually reaches a boiling point.Okay, but I don't get the hype.
- DirectorJordan PeeleStarsLupita Nyong'oWinston DukeElisabeth MossAdelaide Wilson and her family are attacked by mysterious figures dressed in red. Upon closer inspection, the Wilsons realize that the intruders are exact lookalikes of them.I guess it was fine?
Lupita Nyong'o was, of course, outstanding. The visuals were stunning. The story had some neat ideas. But the father was a f*****g pain in the ass, and a textbook example of why I hate too much humour in horror movies.
So, ultimately no biggie, but a lot of freaky visuals. I guess that's something. - DirectorDavid YatesStarsEddie RedmayneKatherine WaterstonDan FoglerGellert Grindelwald plans to raise an army of wizards to rule over non-magical beings. In response, Newt Scamander's former professor, Albus Dumbledore, seeks his help to stop him.The darkest, but also weakest, in the Potterverse.
- DirectorBob PersichettiPeter RamseyRodney RothmanStarsShameik MooreJake JohnsonHailee SteinfeldTeen Miles Morales becomes the Spider-Man of his universe and must join with five spider-powered individuals from other dimensions to stop a threat for all realities.Really liked the meta-ness of it.
- DirectorJeff WadlowStarsLucy HaleTyler PoseyViolett BeaneA harmless game of Truth or Dare among friends turns deadly when someone - or something - begins to punish those who tell a lie or refuse the dare. Not bad for a Blumhouse-produced teen-flick.
- DirectorDavid VictoriStarsBelén RuedaDarío GrandinettiMireia OriolWhen Monica finds out her daughter is about to die she takes extreme measures to save her.Atmospheric as all hell.
- DirectorYeon Sang-hoStarsGong YooJung Yu-miMa Dong-seokWhile a zombie virus breaks out in South Korea, passengers struggle to survive on the train from Seoul to Busan.Best zombie movie in ages.
- DirectorAnthony RussoJoe RussoStarsRobert Downey Jr.Chris EvansMark RuffaloAfter the devastating events of Avengers: Infinity War (2018), the universe is in ruins. With the help of remaining allies, the Avengers assemble once more in order to reverse Thanos' actions and restore balance to the universe. Not as emotional a gutpunch as Infinity War, and surprisingly light on big action set-pieces. They could have trimmed the first half an hour a bit, but overall very enjoyable.
- DirectorDavid LeitchStarsRyan ReynoldsJosh BrolinMorena BaccarinFoul-mouthed mutant mercenary Wade Wilson (a.k.a. Deadpool) assembles a team of fellow mutant rogues to protect a young boy with abilities from the brutal, time-traveling cyborg Cable. No biggie, maybe some better jokes than in the first.
- DirectorJohn CampopianoJustin WhiteStarsBrad GreenquistSean ClarkMark E. AnastasioThis documentary is a detailed look into the making of Pet Sematary (1989).Could have been so much better
- DirectorJimmy ChinElizabeth Chai VasarhelyiStarsAlex HonnoldTommy CaldwellJimmy ChinAlex Honnold faces the biggest challenge of his career, climbing El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. He pursues it Free Solo, which means climbing without a rope and alone. There was some stunning photography and, because of my big-ass fear of heights, the last 15 minutes were like a horror movie for me, but the 97 minute runtime seemed too long, maybe because the guy it was all about wasn't that interesting.
- DirectorDK WelchmanHugh WelchmanStarsDouglas BoothJerome FlynnRobert GulaczykIn a story depicted in oil painted animation, a young man comes to the last hometown of painter Vincent van Gogh to deliver the troubled artist's final letter and ends up investigating his final days there.Stunningly done, but the story was not quite as engaging as I'd expected.
- DirectorKirby DickStarsAndrea PinoAnnie ClarkClaire PotterAn exposé of rape crimes on U.S. college campuses, their institutional cover-ups, and the devastating toll they take on students and their families.Made my blood boil.
- DirectorSteven S. DeKnightStarsJohn BoyegaScott EastwoodCailee SpaenyJake Pentecost, son of Stacker Pentecost, reunites with Mako Mori to lead a new generation of Jaeger pilots, including rival Lambert and 15-year-old hacker Amara, against a new Kaiju threat.I am a big fan of the first one and didn't have half an expectation of this one. It wasn't awful, exactly, but too much of it just seemed like a Transformers/Power Rangers Sunday morning cartoon crossover, and there was too little kaiju action.
- DirectorLinda MendozaStarsWanda SykesWanda Sykes, delivers a sharp-witted and hilarious critique on the state of the world, addressing her perspective on the current political and cultural climate, which she can only describe as, well - not normal.Very funny.
- DirectorAnna NolskogStarsCharlie GustafssonJoakim LangSophie AdolfssonJohn and Nicholas are 15 years old and best friends. They are both very interested in girls but feel insecure when it comes to a first sexual encounter with a woman. That's why they decide that they will get some 'practice' on each other...Sweet and funny.
- DirectorRobert HiltzikStarsFelissa RoseJonathan TierstenKaren FieldsBunks and showers are a mad stabber's beat at a summer camp strictly for teens.Weird-ass movie.
- DirectorJimmy LowereeStarsErin WayEric MathenyRyan SmaleAfter her unborn baby is snatched from her womb, Liz and her husband take a vacation to help them overcome the horrifying and mysterious loss. Her brother documents the trip as Liz continues to be terrorized by an unknown force.I kinda liked it, mostly because the characters were somewhat natural and mostly likeable, but there wasn't a whole lot of horror.
- DirectorDavid YaroveskyStarsElizabeth BanksDavid DenmanJackson A. DunnWhat if a child from another world crash-landed on Earth, but instead of becoming a hero to mankind, he proved to be something far more sinister? Not a big movie in any way, but better than something like Us, because Brightburn didn't try to be more than "What if Superman was an evil child?". Some creepy visuals and some lovely, gruesome kills.
- DirectorChristopher LandonStarsJessica RotheIsrael BroussardPhi VuTree Gelbman discovers that dying over and over was surprisingly easier than the dangers that lie ahead.Even more fun than the first one, which was a pleasant surprise, and more science fiction-y. Not high art, but I do like multiverse-stuff.
- DirectorGary DaubermanStarsVera FarmigaPatrick WilsonMckenna GraceWhile babysitting the daughter of Ed and Lorraine Warren, a teenager and her friend unknowingly awaken an evil spirit trapped in a doll. The best of the Annabelle movies, if only because it didn't try to make the story more convoluted than neccessary (it was basically just going from point A to point B) and because there was a wonderful lack of jumpscares and stupid, loud music. Also, the teens weren't annoying.
- DirectorMike JudgeStarsLuke WilsonMaya RudolphDax ShepardCorporal Joe Bauers, a decidedly average American, is selected for a top-secret hibernation program but is forgotten and left to awaken to a future so incredibly moronic that he's easily the most intelligent person alive.Dunno whether I should laugh or be terrified.
- DirectorFlorian GottschickStarsAnna GrisebachVladimir BurlakovBenno FürmannTwo couples visit a home from their past, and sexual tension brings out the worst in each other. Long-buried grudges resurface.
I thought I was going to watch a semi-rom com, but boy was I wrong. It is close to being a psychological thriller, weaving in and out of dreams and reality, giving it a sense of magical realism. The mood, visuals, and colors give it an almost apocalyptic vibe. - DirectorMichael RadfordStarsShirley MacLaineChristopher PlummerMarcia Gay HardenA withdrawn senior experiences life in new ways when he begins spending time with the free-spirited woman who lives across the hall.Sweet, if somewhat predictable, elevated by the performances of Shirley MacLaine and Christopher Plummer.
- DirectorGilles Paquet-BrennerStarsMax IronsStefanie MartiniGlenn CloseIn Agatha Christie's most twisted tale, a spy-turned-private-detective is lured by his former lover to catch her grandfather's murderer before Scotland Yard exposes dark family secrets.Took a surprisingly dark turn :D
- DirectorJon WattsStarsTom HollandSamuel L. JacksonJake GyllenhaalFollowing the events of Avengers: Endgame (2019), Spider-Man must step up to take on new threats in a world that has changed forever.A lot of fun and with a cameo that is sure to delight most long-time Spider-Fans :D
- DirectorMike MitchellStarsChris PrattElizabeth BanksWill ArnettIt's been five years since everything was awesome and the citizens are facing the huge new threat of Lego Duplo, invaders from outer space, wrecking everything faster than they can rebuild.Nowhere as good as the first one, which I found surprisingly good. It was too busy, but redeemed itself in the 3rd act. The raptors were the best part :D
- DirectorJoel EdgertonStarsLucas HedgesNicole KidmanJoel EdgertonThe son of a Baptist preacher unwillingly participates in a church-supported gay conversion program after being forcibly outed to his parents.Powerful. You wanted to punch Joel Edgerton's character in the face.
- DirectorJon FavreauStarsDonald GloverBeyoncéSeth RogenAfter the murder of his father, a young lion prince flees his kingdom only to learn the true meaning of responsibility and bravery. So sweet :) Simba kitten!
- DirectorSimon HunterStarsSheila HancockKevin GuthriePaul Brannigan83 year old Edie believes that it is never too late - packing an old camping bag, leaving her life behind and embarking on an adventure she never got to have - climbing the imposing Mount Suilven in Scotland.Really adorable.
- DirectorLee CroninStarsSeána KerslakeJames Quinn MarkeyKati OutinenA single mother living in the Irish countryside with her son begins to suspect he may not be her son at all, and fears his increasingly disturbing behavior is linked to a mysterious sinkhole in the forest behind their house.I... didn't expect that level of creepiness and dread. The visuals, sound design, story, the acting. The creepiest movie I've seen in almost a year.
- DirectorVincente DiSantiStarsDrew LeightyVincente DiSantiKatie SchwartzA hiker's survival skills are put to the test, when he stumbles upon the remains of an old abandoned camp and discovers its long dark secrets.Fine, I guess, for a fan-made movie.
- DirectorPaul DavisStarsTom BatemanRebecca RittenhouseAurora PerrineauA sophisticated hitman with a cynical view on modern society finds his work made more difficult when he has to transport a body on Halloween night, but everyone is enamored by what they think is his killer costume.Okay, but too long.
- CreatorLisa McGeeStarsSaoirse-Monica JacksonLouisa HarlandTara Lynne O'NeillThe personal exploits of a 16-year-old girl and her family and friends during the Troubles in the early 1990s in Northern Ireland.Really funny and surprisingly tender.
- DirectorPatrick LussierStarsDermot MulroneyDiana SilversTembi LockeKimberly, a teenager suffering from agoraphobia, has not left the house since her mother's unsolved murder. On the eve of Thanksgiving, she begins to suspect that the safe harbor of home and her doting father may be a dangerous mirage.Would have benefitted from being half as long.
- DirectorJonathan HopkinsStarsMaggie QWill KempSophia WisemanA sleep doctor tries to protect a family from a demon that feeds on people in their nightmares. The first hour or so was above average and actually quite good, but as often happens with this kind of movies the last 25 minutes went into meh-nes..
- DirectorAlexandre AjaStarsKaya ScodelarioBarry PepperMorfydd ClarkA young woman, while attempting to save her father during a category 5 hurricane, finds herself trapped in a flooding house and must fight for her life against alligators.Okay fun, but undoubtedly a B-horror movie. Clunky and expository dialogue and a very abrupt ending.
Didn't make me a bigger fan of Aja, and newcomers probably won't be persuaded to be fans of his. Piranha 3D is still the best movie he has made. - DirectorMatthew HolnessStarsSean HarrisAlun ArmstrongAndy BlitheAfter returning to his childhood home, a disgraced children's puppeteer is forced to confront his wicked stepfather and the secrets that have tortured his entire life.I'm not quite sure I understood it (something about escping your demons, maybe?) but I liked it. Really unsettling. Kinda as if Mike Leigh made a horror movie while on acid.
- DirectorVincenzo NataliStarsLaysla De OliveiraAvery WhittedPatrick WilsonAfter hearing a young boy's cry for help, a sister and brother venture into a vast field of tall grass in Oklahoma but soon discover there may be no way out...and that something evil lurks within. It differs enough from the short story that it's worth a look, but no biggie.
- DirectorJake KasdanStarsDwayne JohnsonKaren GillanKevin HartFour teenagers are sucked into a magical video game, and the only way they can escape is to work together to finish the game.It was cute, I guess, but nowhere near as good as the original. None of the heart and (mild) dread from the first was present in this one, it was too safe. Surprisingly, it was a short scene with Nick Jonas that had the most heart.
I liked the play on identities, though. - StarsVanda ChaloupkováHana BaronováVojtech HýzdalA chilling glimpse into the first-person accounts from people who have witnessed horrifying, peculiar, extraordinary supernatural events and other unexplained phenomena that continue to haunt them.Season 2. No masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination, but still far superior to season 1.
- DirectorCiarán FoyStarsCharlie ShotwellKelly ReillyMax MartiniA boy receiving treatment for his auto-immune disorder discovers that the house he's living in isn't as safe as he thought.Surprisingly good. It went a little overboard towards the end, but at least it took an unexpected turn.
- DirectorMichael DoughertyStarsKyle ChandlerVera FarmigaMillie Bobby BrownThe crypto-zoological agency Monarch faces off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah.Shallow characters, nonsensical and messy story, actors who are too good for movies like this, but at least it was visually stunning, and there were a lot of monsters.
- DirectorJosh CooleyStarsTom HanksTim AllenAnnie PottsWhen a new toy called "Forky" joins Woody and the gang, a road trip alongside old and new friends reveals how big the world can be for a toy.Really sweet and so much fun.
- DirectorEmma TammiStarsCaitlin GerardJulia Goldani TellesAshley ZukermanA plains-woman faces the harshness and isolation of the untamed land in the Western frontier of the late 1800s.Atmospheric, but didn't amount to a whole lot.
- CreatorGary DaubermanMark VerheidenStarsCrystal ReedVirginia MadsenAndy BeanAbby Arcane returns home to Marais, Louisiana to investigate a deadly swamp-borne virus, only to discover the dark, terrifying mysteries of the swamp.I can't remember if I ever read the comics as a kid, but was it also this batsh*t insane?
Anyway, I liked it. - DirectorAndré ØvredalStarsZoe CollettiMichael GarzaGabriel RushIn 1968, the night of Halloween brings mayhem in a small town when a group of friends discovers a notebook written by a mysterious girl that foretells terrifying events.A fun ride, with some rather dark stuff for what is esentially a kids' movie.
- DirectorJohn McPhailStarsElla HuntMalcolm CummingSarah SwireA zombie apocalypse threatens the sleepy town of Little Haven - at Christmas - forcing Anna and her friends to fight, slash and sing their way to survival, facing the undead in a desperate race to reach their loved ones. But they soon discover that no one is safe in this new world, and with civilization falling apart around them, the only people they can truly rely on are each other.Funny, with a few catchy songs. Also some gore.
- DirectorJohannes RobertsStarsSophie NélisseCorinne FoxxBrianne TjuTwo sisters diving in a ruined underwater city quickly learn they've entered the territory of the deadliest shark species in the claustrophobic labyrinth of submerged caves.More people, more action. Bigger doesn't always mean better, and though it was fun, it didn't have the same paranoia-inducing tension as the first.
- DirectorJ.J. AbramsStarsDaisy RidleyJohn BoyegaOscar IsaacThe surviving Resistance faces the First Order once again in the conclusion of the Skywalker saga.My biggest gripe is, that it was a very busy film and that it sometimes felt a bit rushed. But I could never diss the final chapter in the Skywalker-saga, ripe as it was with fan service and nostalgia porn. Good, but not as good as The Last Jedi, which I find the best of the sequel trilogy.
- CreatorJon FavreauStarsPedro PascalChris BartlettKatee SackhoffThe travels of a lone bounty hunter in the outer reaches of the galaxy, far from the authority of the New Republic. Not quite as gritty as I'd hoped/expected, but Baby Yoda <3
