- DirectorMike NewellStarsJulia RobertsKirsten DunstJulia StilesA free-thinking art professor teaches conservative 1950s Wellesley girls to question their traditional social roles.7/10 A nice warm fuzzy message with a good character based story but also, it was basically Dead Poets Society with women.
- DirectorTodd HaynesStarsCate BlanchettRooney MaraSarah PaulsonAn aspiring photographer develops an intimate relationship with an older woman in 1950s New York.5/10 It was alright....pretty dull.
- DirectorJoe PearlmanDavid SoutarStarsLuke GossMatt GossRon PerlmanIn the 1980s, "BROS" were on of the biggest bands in the world - for 15 minutes. A raw and emotional look into the aftermath of fame and the re-connection between two twins torn apart by their past.8/10 Bros as a band were a little before my time, this doc was recommended to me and I am so glad I made time for it. Had me in fits of laughter at the amazing quotables from Matt Goss but I did also feel quite sorry for both of them as they struggled to balance their alpha male personalities and set ego aside at the expense of their relationship. A great watch.
- DirectorM. Night ShyamalanStarsJames McAvoyAnya Taylor-JoyHaley Lu RichardsonThree girls are kidnapped by a man with a diagnosed 23 distinct personalities. They must try to escape before the apparent emergence of a frightful new 24th.8/10 I enjoyed it from start to finish, one of the better recent* Shyamalan films, still pretty tropey, but less tropey than most of his movies.
*anything post Signs. - DirectorM. Night ShyamalanStarsJames McAvoyBruce WillisSamuel L. JacksonSecurity guard David Dunn uses his supernatural abilities to track Kevin Wendell Crumb, a disturbed man who has twenty-four personalities.6.5/10 The first 15 minutes are great fun, everything I wanted but I found myself growing more and more annoyed and unsatisfied as the movie went on. Hated the ending. Wont spoiler it but the movie needed more Bruce Willis.
- DirectorChris SmithStarsBilly McFarlandJason BellGabrielle BluestoneAn exclusive behind the scenes look at the infamous unraveling of the Fyre music festival.7/10. A decent documentary that covers everything that happened at Fyre in fascinating detail, but I would have liked it to have delved a little deeper into Why it happened rather than just What happened. It felt like a bit of a witch hunt also, they managed to get a lot of good contributors that were more than happy to point their finger at Billy McFarland and absolve all responsibility, which made it seems like it was a completely 1 man operation - which of course it wasn't so the doc could have asked more questions and been a little more even in that way. I would quite like to see Hulu's version of events to see if it differs at all.
- DirectorJonathan DemmeStarsJodie FosterAnthony HopkinsScott GlennA young F.B.I. cadet must receive the help of an incarcerated and manipulative cannibal killer to help catch another serial killer, a madman who skins his victims.10/10 A perfect movie.
- DirectorAaron HancoxMichael McNamaraStarsKim LangilleSeamusBobbyMeet the fascinating felines and the people who pamper then in this whimsical look at the ins and outs of Canada's competitive cat show circuit, where the claws come out when a Turkish Angora and an adorable fluffy red Persian face off to take home the national award for Best in Show.5/10 Interesting subject and some real characters, with some pretty stand out use of graphics but the storytelling was not the best and it didn't have much of a narrative, was a bit dull.
- DirectorRobert RodriguezStarsRosa SalazarChristoph WaltzJennifer ConnellyA deactivated cyborg's revived, but can't remember anything of her past and goes on a quest to find out who she is.6/10 It was OK- very pretty with some impressive CGI and good character & world design but it lacked substance, was predictable and pretty cliche - I hated the love story in it and was disappointed at the pacing at the end of the movie.
- DirectorYorgos LanthimosStarsOlivia ColmanEmma StoneRachel WeiszIn early 18th-century England, the status quo at the court is upset when a new servant arrives and endears herself to a frail Queen Anne.8/10 I liked it, it wasn't LOL funny but I was amused and intrigued throughout.
- DirectorMichael ShowalterStarsKumail NanjianiZoe KazanHolly HunterPakistan-born comedian Kumail Nanjiani and grad student Emily Gardner fall in love but struggle as their cultures clash. When Emily contracts a mysterious illness, Kumail finds himself forced to face her feisty parents, his family's expectations, and his true feelings.7/10 A nice enough story with some funny moments but there was nothing particularly stand out about it, a pleasantly funny Apatow movie.
- DirectorDaniel J. ClarkStarsMark K. SargentPatti SargentHannalore Gerling-DunsmoreMeet real Flat Earthers, a small but growing contingent of people who firmly believe in a conspiracy to suppress the truth that the Earth is flat.7/10 was interesting and funny (I enjoyed how the flat earthers kept contradicting themselves) but I don't think it was a great documentary. They didn't interview many people.
- DirectorPhil JohnstonRich MooreStarsJohn C. ReillySarah SilvermanGal GadotSix years after the events of "Wreck-It Ralph," Ralph and Vanellope, now friends, discover a wi-fi router in their arcade, leading them into a new adventure.8/10 surprisingly good, not the strongest story and pretty predictable from the start but I was laughing throughout, some really fun references that I enjoyed.
- DirectorDon BluthStarsElizabeth HartmanDerek JacobiDom DeLuiseTo save her ill son, a field mouse must seek the aid of a colony of rats, with whom she has a deeper link than she suspected.9/10 Really enjoyed it, the story got more and more interesting as it went along and the old school animation is beautiful. Only thing I didn't like was that the main character, whilst she was a strong, protagonist that kicked arse, a lot of her identity was based off her dead husband, I mean, she didn't even have a first name, she was just Mrs Bisby or sometimes Mrs Jonathan Bisby, I was really hoping we'd find out her first name at some point, we didn't. Other than that, a surprisingly good movie.
- DirectorTodd Strauss-SchulsonStarsRebel WilsonLiam HemsworthAdam DevineA young woman disenchanted with love mysteriously finds herself trapped inside a romantic comedy.6/10 it was alright, it was kind of the same joke over and over and the end was a contradiction of what I thought was the whole message of the movie.
- DirectorAnna BodenRyan FleckStarsBrie LarsonSamuel L. JacksonBen MendelsohnCarol Danvers becomes one of the universe's most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races.8/10 Jude Law was in serious danger or ruining this movie, this was a worry for the first half hour or so when everything was super serious and exposition-y. Everything that happened on early 90's earth was great fun and overall I really enjoyed it but it felt a little long... and it should have been called The Amazing Adventures of Carol. Captain Marvel is a dumb name that wasn't really referenced.
- DirectorSilas HowardStarsClaire DanesJim ParsonsOctavia SpencerThe loving parents of a four-year-old must come to terms with the fact that their child is gay.6/10 I enjoyed the movie, the acting was great from all cast but it wasn't what I was expecting - it was completely about the parents struggle and there was very little screentime from Jake, I would have liked to have seen more about him and his struggles to give it more balance and address the topic more directly.
- DirectorChris FogginStarsJames PurefoyMeadow NobregaDavid HaymanTen fisherman from Cornwall are signed by Universal Records and achieve a top ten hit with their debut album, "Sea Shanties."6/10 Not really my kind of movie to be honest, heartwarming and nice but for me the story was a little dull.
- DirectorSusanna FogelStarsJustin TherouxKate McKinnonBlanka Györfi-TóthBest friends Audrey and Morgan unwittingly become entangled in an international conspiracy when one of them discovers that the boyfriend who dumped her was actually a spy.6/10 Pretty basic / dumb spy comedy. Had some decent laughs and fun action scenes to keep you entertained but it was tropelicious.
- DirectorDavid F. SandbergStarsZachary LeviMark StrongAsher AngelA newly fostered young boy in search of his mother instead finds unexpected super powers and soon gains a powerful enemy.6.5/10 the comedy parts of the movie were so funny, lots of laugh out loud moments. Such a shame that the rest of the movie is poorly written, with bad character development and lazy stereotypes, I found all attempts at plot very tedious but the action and comedy very entertaining... conflicting.
- DirectorJohn Lee HancockStarsKevin CostnerWoody HarrelsonKathy BatesThe untold true story of the legendary detectives who brought down Bonnie and Clyde.7/10 a bit dull in places but good cinematography, costumes and solid performance,I liked that it was quite subtle and true to events but I was expecting a little more humourous banter from Costner and Harrelson which was a but of a shame.
- DirectorJennifer Kaytin RobinsonStarsGina RodriguezLaKeith StanfieldBrittany SnowAfter a devastating break up on the eve of her cross-country move, Jenny enjoys one last NYC adventure with her two best pals. Someone Great is a romantic comedy about love, loss, growth and the everlasting bond of female friendship.7.5/10 Whilst the story is not exactly original, I really enjoyed it. The main cast had great chemistry and the soundtrack was awesome.
- DirectorRyan MurphyStarsJulia RobertsJavier BardemRichard JenkinsA married woman realizes how unhappy her marriage really is, and that her life needs to go in a different direction. After a painful divorce, she takes off on a round-the-world journey to "find herself".2/10 soooooo long, so dull, soooooo self indulgent, not for me.
- DirectorJohn G. AvildsenStarsSylvester StalloneTalia ShireBurt YoungA small-time Philadelphia boxer gets a supremely rare chance to fight the world heavyweight champion in a bout in which he strives to go the distance for his self-respect.9/10 Timeless classic. Loses a point for its slightly misogynistic approach to the one and only woman in the movie, but overall, a real winner.
- DirectorAnthony RussoJoe RussoStarsRobert Downey Jr.Chris EvansMark RuffaloAfter the devastating events of Avengers: Infinity War (2018), the universe is in ruins. With the help of remaining allies, the Avengers assemble once more in order to reverse Thanos' actions and restore balance to the universe.7.5/10 - Not as exciting as the one before, a great battle scene in the middle but everything after that was loooong and tying up loose ends mostly.
