- DirectorYeon Sang-hoStarsGong YooJung Yu-miMa Dong-seokWhile a zombie virus breaks out in South Korea, passengers struggle to survive on the train from Seoul to Busan.Netflix. Fantastic. What a movie to start the new year! This is how you blend horror with solid drama and well-developed characters. Very few films succeed with that (Jaws and A Quiet Place come to mind). Hollywood should learn a thing or two. I sincerely hope there will be no remake to the already perfect movie. Watch it, nevermind the subtitles. (Korean)
- DirectorPeter FarrellyStarsViggo MortensenMahershala AliLinda CardelliniA working-class Italian-American bouncer becomes the driver for an African-American classical pianist on a tour of venues through the 1960s American South.Full of heart. Beautiful story of friendship in the face of intolerance.
- DirectorHans Petter MolandStarsStellan SkarsgårdBruno GanzPål Sverre HagenAfter his son is murdered by drug dealers, a snowplow driver starts seeking revenge.Netflix. Interesting pacing and dark humour for an action movie. Definitely different from a standard Hollywood fare, and that's a good thing. (Norwegian)
- DirectorKatsuhiro ÔtomoStarsMitsuo IwataNozomu SasakiMami KoyamaA secret military project endangers Neo-Tokyo when it turns a biker gang member into a rampaging psychic psychopath who can only be stopped by a teenager, his gang of biker friends and a group of psychics.Borrowed from the library. A very impressive animation considering its age. The story engaged me throughout. I only wish that character design was a bit more varied, as some looked identical in some situations. Often Kei and Kaneda could only be distinguished by their clothing, for example. (Japanese)
- DirectorJohn KrasinskiStarsEmily BluntJohn KrasinskiMillicent SimmondsA family struggles for survival in a world where most humans have been killed by blind but noise-sensitive creatures. They are forced to communicate in sign language to keep the creatures at bay.Netflix. Had to rewatch A Quiet Place the moment it came to Netflix. Still just a good. Great horror that goes beyond cliches.
- DirectorYorgos LanthimosStarsOlivia ColmanEmma StoneRachel WeiszIn early 18th-century England, the status quo at the court is upset when a new servant arrives and endears herself to a frail Queen Anne.If it was another historical drama, it would have been uneventful. But the creative camerawork, quirky directing, fun characters, and dark humour all make The Favourite a standout in its genre.
- DirectorDaniel KwanDaniel ScheinertStarsPaul DanoDaniel RadcliffeMary Elizabeth WinsteadA hopeless man stranded on a deserted island befriends a dead body, and together they go on a surreal journey to get home.Netflix. Bizarre, but imaginative. You'd think Swiss Army Man was just another low-brow indie flick if you just briefly glanced at it. But underneath all the fart jokes and the odd plot developments there is true heart that makes you care about these characters. Cinematography is also gorgeous.
- DirectorDavid AyerStarsWill SmithJared LetoMargot RobbieA secret government agency recruits some of the most dangerous incarcerated super-villains to form a defensive task force. Their first mission: save the world from the apocalypse.Netflix. I was staying away for as long as I could thanks to all the bad reviews and word of mouth. But it was the last DC movie for me to watch before Aquaman, so I caved. That was painful. Yes, Margot Robbie is great as Harley Quinn, but that was the only positive that I could come up with. Writers wasted 40 minutes to brief us on who is who, yet we still knew or cared very little. Bad choice to begin your film with a montage. There were so many plot lines that were conveniently shoved under a rug not to deal with them properly. Slipknot, for example, was inserted without the aforementioned intro and disposed of within minutes. The villain's storyline is contradictory and underbaked. So was her heart vital to her existence, or not? Lazy writing and haphazardly thrown together characters do not make a good movie.
- DirectorRich MooreStarsJohn C. ReillyJack McBrayerJane LynchA video game villain wants to be a hero and sets out to fulfill his dream, but his quest brings havoc to the whole arcade where he lives. So good. It made me feel all the feels. What took me so long?
- DirectorPhil JohnstonRich MooreStarsJohn C. ReillySarah SilvermanGal GadotSix years after the events of "Wreck-It Ralph," Ralph and Vanellope, now friends, discover a wi-fi router in their arcade, leading them into a new adventure. Not even close to the predecessor. The plot was lacking. The heart and soul were not there. Ralph, the usually lovable chum, is now a needy nuisance. The writers focused more on clever ways to portray the internet, rather than develop a story that is fun and heartfelt like it was before.
- DirectorEthan CoenJoel CoenStarsTim Blake NelsonWillie WatsonClancy BrownSix tales of life and violence in the Old West, following a singing gunslinger, a bank robber, a traveling impresario, an elderly prospector, a wagon train, and a perverse pair of bounty hunters.Netflix. Look at that photography! Brilliant colours and atmospheric angles. I am in love with Coens' vision of the wild west. Each segment is like an observation, rather than a complete story with a beginning and an end, but it makes it that much more fun. The last segment even gave off some spooky vibes. I wish I saw a little more of that story.
- DirectorAdam McKayStarsChristian BaleAmy AdamsSteve CarellThe story of Dick Cheney, an unassuming bureaucratic Washington insider, who quietly wielded immense power as Vice President to George W. Bush, reshaping the country and the globe in ways that are still felt today.Valuable movie in the message it's trying to relay, but something is lacking to make it fully engaging.
- CreatorGreg BerlantiSera GambleStarsPenn BadgleyVictoria PedrettiTati GabrielleA dangerously charming, intensely obsessive young man goes to extreme measures to insert himself into the lives of those he is transfixed by.Netflix. Season 1. Started out great. I was hooked on episode 1, and then it quickly became a chore to watch. A lot of episodes feel like a senseless filler, chock full of repetitive and immature relationship struggles. The main female character quickly became unbearable in her stupidity and vapidness. It's sad when you cheer for the psycho to finish the lead off.
- DirectorJonah HillStarsSunny SuljicKatherine WaterstonLucas HedgesFollows Stevie, a thirteen-year-old in 1990s-era Los Angeles who spends his summer navigating between his troubled home life and a group of new friends that he meets at a Motor Avenue skate shop.Brutal reality of 90's youth, when it was cool to be a rude slacker. Perfectly captured time period and loyalty of friendship.
- DirectorJacques AudiardStarsJohn C. ReillyJoaquin PhoenixJake GyllenhaalEli and Charlie Sisters, an infamous duo of gunslinging assassins, chase a gold prospector and his unexpected ally in 1850s Oregon.I missed something along the way. The soundtrack is cool though.
- DirectorYarrow CheneyScott MosierStarsBenedict CumberbatchCameron SeelyRashida JonesA grumpy Grinch plots to ruin Christmas for the village of Whoville.Colorful and cute. Nothing overly special as far as current standards for feature animation go, and on the technical side it's a treat to see, so it's fine for what it is.
- DirectorTravis KnightStarsHailee SteinfeldJorge Lendeborg Jr.John CenaOn the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small California beach town. On the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, Charlie Watson discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken.Bee is the cutest, and it's great to watch his interactions with the main lead. As expected from a Transformers movie, there are cringey, cliched moments, and John Cena should not be an actor, but to see it once is pretty cool.
- DirectorJames WanStarsJason MomoaAmber HeardWillem DafoeArthur Curry, the human-born heir to the underwater kingdom of Atlantis, goes on a quest to prevent a war between the worlds of ocean and land.I did not expect much, because trailer looked cartoon-y at best, but I actually had fun. I was not bored at any point, like it happens with some 2+ hrs superhero movies. The only thing I hated about Aquaman is Nicole Kidman's performance, but thankfully her appearances are limited. DC has been on the roll.
- DirectorFede AlvarezStarsClaire FoyBeau GadsdonSverrir GudnasonYoung computer hacker Lisbeth Salander and journalist Mikael Blomkvist find themselves caught in a web of spies, cybercriminals and corrupt government officials.Never seen any other films in the franchise or read the book, so I have nothing to compare. Okay, average action movie.
- DirectorBjörn RungeStarsGlenn CloseJonathan PryceMax IronsA wife questions her life choices as she travels to Stockholm to see her husband receive the Nobel Prize for Literature.Lovely family drama with great performances from the leads.
- DirectorMarielle HellerStarsMelissa McCarthyRichard E. GrantDolly WellsWhen Lee Israel falls out of step with current tastes, she turns her art form to deception.Fascinating account of a daring and desperate act. Melissa McCarthy sort of delivers the same sarcastic, dry humour she is usually known for.
- DirectorJeffrey NachmanoffStarsKeanu ReevesAlice EveThomas MiddleditchA scientist becomes obsessed with bringing back his family members who died in a traffic accident. The idea explored in this movie is exciting and very interesting to pick apart. Also, I do imagine we'll have to ponder similar questions of ethics and morality soon enough as humanity. For that alone I do not regret watching Replicas. The human element, however, is severely lacking. Stilted dialogue, wooden acting, odd reactions, plot holes, bad CGI of the robot, and stupid ending all ruin what could have been a great sci-fi thriller.
- DirectorSteve McQueenStarsViola DavisMichelle RodriguezElizabeth DebickiFour women with nothing in common except a debt left behind by their dead husbands' criminal activities take fate into their own hands and conspire to forge a future on their own terms. Not a heist thriller, like I thought it would be. Heavy on drama, but in a really good way. The movie takes its time slowly unfolding each character, and features a nice twist by the end. You gotta suspend your disbelieve in some places, but it's not distracting to overall enjoyment.
- DirectorJulius AveryStarsJovan AdepoWyatt RussellMathilde OllivierA small group of American soldiers find horror behind enemy lines on the eve of D-Day.I have to say Overlord was well filmed. That opening scene is worthy of a blockbuster. The blend of war and zombie genres is also rather refreshing. The movie is not afraid to push the envelope. I did get irritated by the main character a few times, as he was just too morally good. He needed to get off his cross for me to like him more. However, really fun flick!
- CreatorLaurie NunnStarsAsa ButterfieldGillian AndersonNcuti GatwaA teenage boy with a sex therapist mother teams up with a high school classmate to set up an underground sex therapy clinic at school.Netflix. This show will push your boundaries if you are a conservative type. It explores the issues that modern teenagers might face with a heart and wit that would appeal to anyone. One of the best Netflix originals out there.
