- DirectorPaul SchraderStarsEthan HawkeAmanda SeyfriedCedric The EntertainerA minister of a small congregation in upstate New York grapples with mounting despair brought on by tragedy, worldly concerns and a tormented past.Jan 1
Slow moving film that is carried by Hawke’s performance. It could have done better with getting to the point faster, but once it did the plot became much more interesting. The end of the film was disappointing with the direction they decided to go. 7/10 - DirectorAndy TennantStarsDrew BarrymoreAnjelica HustonDougray ScottThe Brothers Grimm arrive at the home of a wealthy Grande Dame who speaks of the many legends surrounding the fable of the cinder girl before telling the "true" story of her ancestor.Jan 1
An unremarkable retelling of the Cinderella story made worthwhile by Drew Barrymore’s presence. Without her and the moments of familiarity from the cinderella story I would have likely turned the movie off. 6/10 - DirectorPaul FeigStarsAnna KendrickBlake LivelyHenry GoldingStephanie is a single mother with a parenting vlog who befriends Emily, a secretive upper-class woman who has a child at the same elementary school. When Emily goes missing, Stephanie takes it upon herself to investigate.Jan 1
From the trailer this looked like an interesting thriller. I was pleasantly surprised to find there was a fun mix of comedy in it too. Anna Kendrick is always a pleasure to watch. 7/10 - DirectorAndrew StantonAngus MacLaneStarsEllen DeGeneresAlbert BrooksEd O'NeillFriendly but forgetful blue tang Dory begins a search for her long-lost parents and everyone learns a few things about the real meaning of family along the way.Jan 2
Plenty of funny new characters and a story that takes the returning characters out of the ocean for much of the film. The end with the truck is the only downside to the film. 9/10 - DirectorDavid SladeStarsFionn WhiteheadCraig ParkinsonAlice LoweA young programmer starts to question reality when he adapts a mad writer's fantasy novel into a video game.Jan 2
Cool concept with the choose your own adventure aspect. At the same time this seemed to distract from it having the full on Black Mirror effect. Some of the choices at the beginning had little to no effect on the story which leaves you wondering if any of your choices have and effect. The twists towards the end are what make it worthwhile. 7/10 - DirectorMalcolm D. LeeStarsKevin HartTiffany HaddishRob RiggleA group of high school dropouts is forced to attend night school in hopes that they will pass the GED exam to finish high school.Jan 3
A truly terrible collection of performances and a painfully unfunny script. Even the jokes that could have been funny were uncomfortable because thanks to the impossible to believe characters. The only genuine performance was from the fiancé and that was a minimal role. Lots of dumb comedies manage to be good, and some are so bad they are funny. This movie is neither of those. 2/10 - DirectorJohn LasseterAsh BrannonLee UnkrichStarsTom HanksTim AllenJoan CusackWhen Woody is stolen by a toy collector, Buzz and his friends set out on a rescue mission to save Woody before he becomes a museum toy property with his roundup gang Jessie, Prospector, and Bullseye.Jan 4
I was thinking this was my least fav of the 3 films, but there is so much fun stuff here I’m not so sure now. Solid trilogy...hopefully the 4th doesn’t end this strong run. 9/10 - DirectorYorgos LanthimosStarsOlivia ColmanEmma StoneRachel WeiszIn early 18th-century England, the status quo at the court is upset when a new servant arrives and endears herself to a frail Queen Anne.Jan 4
Even though I’m really not a fan of costume dramas, the Favourite made for an enjoyable film. This is mostly thanks to the humour that was added in. The strong performances didn’t hurt either. The best aspect of the film was the cinematography and the set pieces. Beautiful looking film. Not something I’d necessarily want to see again though. 7/10 - DirectorBob HathcockStarsAlan YoungChristopher LloydTerence McGovernScrooge McDuck takes Huey, Dewey, and Louie to Egypt to find a pyramid and magic lamp.Jan 5
I had a lot of fun watching this with Sawyer for the first time. I remember watching duck tales a lot when I was younger so the nostalgia is driving the score up for sure. 7/10 - DirectorTravis KnightStarsHailee SteinfeldJorge Lendeborg Jr.John CenaOn the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small California beach town. On the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, Charlie Watson discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken.Jan 7
This was a very welcome change from how the previous transformers films have been handled. Even though I really enjoyed the first one and the first Wahlberg one, this is a better movie. Great action, strong performances and lots of fun 80s references. 8/10 - DirectorAdam McKayStarsChristian BaleAmy AdamsSteve CarellThe story of Dick Cheney, an unassuming bureaucratic Washington insider, who quietly wielded immense power as Vice President to George W. Bush, reshaping the country and the globe in ways that are still felt today.Jan 7
This film felt more one sided than a Michael Moore documentary. Bale’s performance was great. Everything else about the film was a mess. The style that worked in the Big Short only managed to take the viewer out of the moment repeatedly. As somebody who doesn’t know much about the subject the movie covered, I would have expected to leave the movie knowing much more about it. Instead the topic is as unclear as ever, not knowing whether to believe what i was seeing or not. 5/10 - DirectorBrett SimmonsStarsFran KranzAlyson HanniganBrittany S. HallA camp counselor suffering from blackouts finds himself surrounded by murder victims. He turns to his horror movie enthusiast friend for advice, and to contend with the idea he may be the killer.Jan 10
I really wanted to like this film. Unfortunately, I didn’t find the attempts at humour worked very well. The meta aspect made it somewhat unique at least, but not enough to carry the film. Overall a blah horror comedy. 5/10 - DirectorAndrew BowlerStarsAsa ButterfieldSophie TurnerSkyler GisondoA genius teenage boy is in love with a girl who breaks up with him after a year. He invents a time machine and tries to fix the breakup repeatedly. He finally goes a year back with his friend to fix the bad days.Jan 11
Underwhelming for a time travel romcom. Many moments that had potential to be something more were cut short. The Infinite Man is the high bar for the sub genre. This film doesn’t come close to matching that. The recent When We First Met is also a better version of the same story. 6/10 - DirectorPhil JohnstonRich MooreStarsJohn C. ReillySarah SilvermanGal GadotOn a quest to save the video game 'Sugar Rush' and to find a replacement, Ralph and his best friend Vanellope travel to the World Wide Web through a Wi-Fi router they find at the arcade.Jan 13
Plenty of great Disney references and internet references. Like still lots that I missed even the 2nd time through. Again I felt like it needed more scenes with the princesses. I could have done without the part about the virus at the end. 8/10 - DirectorLuca GuadagninoStarsChloë Grace MoretzTilda SwintonDoris HickA darkness swirls at the center of a world-renowned dance company, one that will engulf the artistic director, an ambitious young dancer, and a grieving psychotherapist. Some will succumb to the nightmare. Others will finally wake up.Jan 16
Stylish, yet slow moving horror remake. A tighter edit under 2 hours would have made this a much more satisfying film. Thankfully there is plenty to enjoy with the gore, the cinematography and set pieces. 7/10 - DirectorJohn McPhailStarsElla HuntMalcolm CummingSarah SwireA zombie apocalypse threatens the sleepy town of Little Haven - at Christmas - forcing Anna and her friends to fight, slash and sing their way to survival, facing the undead in a desperate race to reach their loved ones. But they soon discover that no one is safe in this new world, and with civilization falling apart around them, the only people they can truly rely on are each other.Jan 17
Musical comedy about zombies? Count me in! The songs were catchy and enjoyable, but the humour doesnt compare to Shaun of the Dead. An enjoyable film thanks to the musical aspect but not something I'd want to watch over and over like Shaun of the Dead. 7/10 - DirectorRob MarshallStarsEmily BluntLin-Manuel MirandaBen WhishawA few decades after her original visit, Mary Poppins, the magical nanny, returns to help the Banks siblings and Michael's children through a difficult time in their lives.Jan 17
I still had the same concerns with this sequel that I had with the original Mary Poppins film. The animated sequence seemed like an unnecessary gimmick and the characters did little to draw me into their story. That being said, I did enjoy this one more than the original. Perhaps some tightening up of the story and removing the animated sequence would have made for a better film. 7/10 - DirectorM. Night ShyamalanStarsJames McAvoyAnya Taylor-JoyHaley Lu RichardsonThree girls are kidnapped by a man with a diagnosed 23 distinct personalities. They must try to escape before the apparent emergence of a frightful new 24th.Jan 18
I decided to rewatch this film before seeing Glass. I was able to appreciate the style a bit more this time around. Better than average camerawork and some good performances from the leads. I'm still not sure why they bothered with 23 personalities if they were only going to show less than 10 of them. 7/10 - DirectorM. Night ShyamalanStarsJames McAvoyBruce WillisSamuel L. JacksonSecurity guard David Dunn uses his supernatural abilities to track Kevin Wendell Crumb, a disturbed man who has twenty-four personalities.Jan 18
While it was nice to see the 3 main characters come together, it seems that Shyamalan held back too much. The characters took too long to follow through on anything and then we were given an underwhelming twist to end what could have been a strong trilogy of films. Much like split, the style was the real star of the film. 7/10 - DirectorAnnabel JankelRocky MortonStarsBob HoskinsJohn LeguizamoDennis HopperTwo Brooklyn plumbers, Mario and Luigi, must travel to another dimension to rescue a princess from the evil dictator King Koopa and stop him from taking over the world.Jan 18
I made the mistake of mentioning the existence of this movie to Sawyer. Being a fan of the Mario game franchise he wanted to watch the movie. Super disappointing film as a fan of the games. They put in no effort to make it like the game. Just some names that were the same and thats it. Even when they were given boots to make them jump high, they didnt use them to jump on bad guys. Terrible script and performances on top of those other issues makes for a film that has earned its place on the bottom 100 movies on imdb. 2/10 - DirectorJames WhaleStarsClaude RainsGloria StuartWilliam HarriganA scientist finds a way of becoming invisible, but in doing so, he becomes murderously insane.Jan 23
I had better memories of this from the first time I saw it. The fact that it starts with him already invisible and we don’t get to see his origin hurts the film. As the movie goes on the viewer is meant to have empathy for the invisible man, but it’s not that effective because we’ve never seen the actual person. The effects are very impressive for the time though. 6/10 - DirectorJoe CornishStarsLouis Ashbourne SerkisDenise GoughDean ChaumooAlex, a 12-year-old boy, and his friends fight an evil sorceress with the help of Excalibur, the sword of King Arthur, in a bid to save the world from her atrocities.Jan 25
Surprisingly entertaining kids movie considering I’d never heard of it before going to see it. Like most kids movies there are silly, over the top moments. Overall it was just a fun twist on the King Arthur and the sword in the stone story. 7/10 - DirectorJonas ÅkerlundStarsMads MikkelsenVanessa HudgensKatheryn WinnickA retiring assassin suddenly finds himself on the receiving end of a hit, contracted by none other than his own employer seeking to cash in on the pensions of aging employees.Jan 26
The presence of Mads makes the film worth watching right off the bat. The same story with a different style could have made for a better film. The idea of the hired killer being the target has been done before, though still interesting. The odd style with the text on screen introducing each killer was distracting. The good action and killings throughout the film could have carried it without the unnecessary stylistic flair. 6/10 - DirectorBryan SingerStarsRami MalekLucy BoyntonGwilym LeeThe story of the legendary British rock band Queen and lead singer Freddie Mercury, leading up to their famous performance at Live Aid (1985).Feb 2
For somebody with such a crazy life, Freddy Mercury’s story has an all around safe feeling to it. Most problems he runs across throughout the film are solved within a few mins and none of the characters showed enough emotion (positive or negative) for the viewer to care. The biggest problem seems to be Rami Malik’s inability to reach his lips over the fake teeth. The first 20 mins of the film is just watching him wrestle with those teeth. The movie got to be much better once he joined the band. The performances were the best part of the film.
This was the last of the best pic noms for this year I hadn’t seen and it’s easily one of the worst. 6/10 - DirectorYarrow CheneyScott MosierStarsBenedict CumberbatchCameron SeelyRashida JonesA grumpy Grinch plots to ruin Christmas for the village of Whoville.Feb 2
I had pretty low expectations for this since I’m such a fan of the original. Thankfully it wasn’t bad like the Jim Carrey version. Mostly good remake but I wish they hadn’t changed the grinch’s demeanor so much. He was a nicer guy in general which made the transformation at the end less effective. 6/10
