Game of Thrones - Season 8 Review
Season rating - 8.0/10
Highlight episode - The Long Night
MVP: Peter Dinklage
I'll get it out of the way: this was a a massive disappointment. The first two episodes were methodically slow, and that was fine as I knew it was building towards the big battle. The third episode being poorly lit to begin with wasn't a big problem for me, and the soundtrack was phenomenal. As for the Night King threat being contained in one episode? Yeah, not a fan of that decision and although it may have been cliche, I actually wanted to see some Jon vs. Night King action. Reducing the enemy to some brainless, "let's wipe out humanity" was a massive misstep and the lack of consequences from the battle itself was underwhelming. Having said all that, I still enjoyed the episode A LOT and the spectacle did win me over.
As for the penultimate episode, yet again the writing was shoddy and Jamie and Cersei's end was contrived and uncharacteristic. Of course, the reason I rate it so highly is Sapochnik's direction of the King's Landing massacre. Absolutely amazing stuff. Daenerys' decision was foreshadowed, but needed a much longer build-up and suffered from the limited episodes. This bridges towards the main problem of the season, and how the transition period between each 'villain' was so jarring.
The finale played it as safe as they could and was actually quite boring towards the end. The show managed to make me lose my investment in characters and save for the Iron Throne scene - still very predictable - I was left very deflated. I guess this is what comes of high expectations and showrunners trying to subvert them in order to be shocking, when really they're discrediting all the show built up for 7 seasons.
