Movies I want to see in 2019
These are the films that are on my radar for the 2019 movie season. Probably will not see a 1/4 of them until digital/video release, but they will get a viewing eventually. The list will continue to grow as I become aware of more movies.

- DirectorAdam RobitelStarsTaylor RussellLogan MillerJay EllisSix strangers find themselves in a maze of deadly mystery rooms and must use their wits to survive. For most of the film, there are plenty of thrills, chills and twists that you are fully engaged in the plight of the characters. The film's weakness is an ending which is less story serving/satisfying as it is sequel baiting.
- DirectorCharles Martin SmithStarsAshley JuddJonah Hauer-KingEdward James OlmosA female dog travels four hundred miles in search of her owner throughout a Colorado wilderness.Pretty much follows the story line of previous films that follow the adventure of a pup whose inner thoughts we are privy to. All around a fun watch, if not entirely predictable. It does lose some of the emotional impact with the use of some poorly rendered CGI animals. A solid 7 out of 10 stars.
- DirectorJeffrey NachmanoffStarsKeanu ReevesAlice EveThomas MiddleditchA scientist becomes obsessed with bringing back his family members who died in a traffic accident.
- DirectorM. Night ShyamalanStarsJames McAvoyBruce WillisSamuel L. JacksonSecurity guard David Dunn uses his supernatural abilities to track Kevin Wendell Crumb, a disturbed man who has twenty-four personalities. The culmination of M. Night's "comic trilogy", it lives up to most expectations while the ending/twist will definitely split fans. Everyone returns with wonderful performances that help to even out the rough spots of the story. Maybe it doesn't play to all fan expectations, but it, in my opinion, plays to the story started and doesn't try to be too cleaver with its resolution.
- DirectorJoe CornishStarsLouis Ashbourne SerkisDenise GoughDean ChaumooAlex, a 12-year-old boy, and his friends fight an evil sorceress with the help of Excalibur, the sword of King Arthur, in a bid to save the world from her atrocities.A smaller scale film than what you would expect, it ends up being a fun adventure with a twist on the Arthurian legend. Quality CGI helps this work and wonderfully cast kids and adults. Ultimately it does feel very much made-for-TV and this is probably why the box office was less than stellar. Still, this should get some solid PPV and disk action once it is released to the home market. A fun 7 out of 10 star adventure.
- DirectorMike MitchellStarsChris PrattElizabeth BanksWill ArnettIt's been five years since everything was awesome and the citizens are facing the huge new threat of Lego Duplo, invaders from outer space, wrecking everything faster than they can rebuild.Throughout this film I kept waiting for the spark of adventure and fun the first film had in spades. Though it does find that spark, it never really measures up to the first film. It is still entertaining and worth at least a rental, but definitely a paler cousin to the original film. A still solid 7 out of 10 starts
- DirectorAdam ShankmanStarsTaraji P. HensonKristen LedlowJosh BrenerA woman is boxed out by the male sports agents in her profession, but gains an unexpected edge over them when she develops the ability to hear men's thoughts. Not a lot to be touted or complained about, it is a serviceable enough comedy that ultimately is a little too by-the-numbers.
- DirectorStephen MerchantStarsDwayne JohnsonLena HeadeyVince VaughnA former wrestler and his family make a living performing at small venues around the country while his kids dream of joining World Wrestling Entertainment.Star-making role for Pugh and a wonderfully eccentric supporting performances from Frost and Heady, all in all, a solid biopic that hits all the right feels.
- DirectorChristopher LandonStarsJessica RotheIsrael BroussardPhi VuTree Gelbman discovers that dying over and over was surprisingly easier than the dangers that lie ahead.
- DirectorRobert RodriguezStarsRosa SalazarChristoph WaltzJennifer ConnellyA deactivated cyborg's revived, but can't remember anything of her past and goes on a quest to find out who she is.Wonderful performances and ground breaking SFX, Alita brings Rodriquez's low-budget sensibilities to a large scale film. A little easy to predict, none the less, entertaining and thought provoking, hopefully with help from the international box office, we get more adventures.
- DirectorTodd Strauss-SchulsonStarsRebel WilsonLiam HemsworthAdam DevineA young woman disenchanted with love mysteriously finds herself trapped inside a romantic comedy. It is a fun night out for a couple, or just for someone that enjoys these kinds of films. The twist here is the romantic movie within the movie. Rebel continues to be a fun actress to follow adventures on and a supporting cast which is along for the fun. Liam Hemsworth gets to stretch his comedic skills, like his brother. A fun 7 out of 10 stars.
- DirectorDean DeBloisStarsJay BaruchelAmerica FerreraF. Murray AbrahamWhen Hiccup discovers Toothless isn't the only Night Fury, he must seek the Hidden World, a secret Dragon Utopia before a hired tyrant named Grimmel finds it first.
- DirectorTyler PerryStarsTyler PerryCassi DavisPatrice LovelyA joyous family reunion becomes a hilarious nightmare as Madea and the crew travel to backwoods Georgia, where they find themselves unexpectedly planning a funeral that might unveil unsavory family secrets.
- DirectorAnna BodenRyan FleckStarsBrie LarsonSamuel L. JacksonBen MendelsohnCarol Danvers becomes one of the universe's most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races.Never living up to the ballyhoo cultural event it was supposed to be, the film is entertaining, yet nothing out of the norm. With too much retcon and lacking emotional story and lead, here is hoping, like other origin films in the MCU, additional outings will only improve my opinion of it.
- DirectorKatt SheaStarsSophia LillisZoe ReneeMackenzie GrahamA bit of an outsider struggling to fit into her new surroundings, Nancy and her pals set out to solve a mystery, make new friends, and establish their place in the community.
- DirectorJordan PeeleStarsLupita Nyong'oWinston DukeElisabeth MossAdelaide Wilson and her family are attacked by mysterious figures dressed in red. Upon closer inspection, the Wilsons realize that the intruders are exact lookalikes of them.Totally engrossed for 3/4 of the movie, the last 1/4 you either love or hate and I am in the latter. It is not a horrible ending, but one that is both telegraphed and confounding at the same time. Wonderful performances with Lupita Nyong'o a force in both roles, ultimately it is those performances that counter my disappointment with the ending. A solid scare 7 out of 10 stars.
- DirectorTim BurtonStarsColin FarrellMichael KeatonDanny DeVitoA young elephant, whose oversized ears enable him to fly, helps save a struggling circus, but when the circus plans a new venture, Dumbo and his friends discover dark secrets beneath its shiny veneer. In a year of Disney animated classics being given the live-action treatment, Dumbo serves as a good entry, albeit a pedestrian Burton film. Excellent performances and well done CGI that bring Dumbo to life. There is an expectation of Burton doing a movie which this film seems to have less of his Gothic influence. Still, a good entry if not unnecessary.
- DirectorDavid F. SandbergStarsZachary LeviMark StrongAsher AngelA newly fostered young boy in search of his mother instead finds unexpected super powers and soon gains a powerful enemy.More of a Saturday morning entry than the dark and brooding adventures the DCEU is known for, Shazam brings with it a lighter air of entertainment. All of the performances are spot on and help to make it a fun film. A less-than-stellar box office has future films in question. Hopefully we get to explore more territory with these characters.
- DirectorKevin KölschDennis WidmyerStarsJason ClarkeAmy SeimetzJohn LithgowDr. Louis Creed and his wife, Rachel, relocate from Boston to rural Maine with their two young children. The couple soon discover a mysterious burial ground hidden deep in the woods near their new home.Overall, a well made film, though perhaps a little too polished. There are wonderfully scary bits and atmosphere with strong performances. But it lacks a sense of charm that the original still evokes. It is a case of maybe being a little too polished of a film when it needed to have a bit more grit.
- DirectorNeil MarshallStarsDavid HarbourMilla JovovichIan McShaneCaught between the worlds of the supernatural and human, Hellboy battles an ancient sorceress bent on revenge. Not a total waste of your time to rent at home, still, while David Harbour brings similar flare to the role, you do miss Ron Pearlman and Del Toro magic.
- DirectorAnthony RussoJoe RussoStarsRobert Downey Jr.Chris EvansMark RuffaloAfter the devastating events of Avengers: Infinity War (2018), the universe is in ruins. With the help of remaining allies, the Avengers assemble once more in order to reverse Thanos' actions and restore balance to the universe. While it offers up a fitting end for our original crew of Avengers, there is a lot more frivolous fan servicing that works against it. Less winks to the audience and more substance would make this easily the best film in the MCU. As is, ranks in the top 5, right at #5 rather than higher with Infinity War.
- DirectorRob LettermanStarsRyan ReynoldsJustice SmithKathryn NewtonIn a world where people collect Pokémon to do battle, a boy comes across an intelligent talking Pikachu who seeks to be a detective. It just barely gets a "recommend" rating. All in all, it entertains, but if you are not immersed in the world, not sure just how much enjoyment you will get from it. There are a lot of nods to the Pokemon world that totally went over my head, so purely based on entertainment value it gets a passing grade. Just don't expect TOO much from it.
- DirectorDome KarukoskiStarsNicholas HoultLily CollinsColm MeaneyTolkien's novels were inspired by his mom's storytelling, falling in love with another orphan, Edith, forming a brotherhood with 3 other misfits at school, the trench war of WWI and later telling stories to his own kids.
- DirectorChad StahelskiStarsKeanu ReevesHalle BerryIan McShaneJohn Wick is on the run after killing a member of the international assassins' guild, and with a $14 million price tag on his head, he is the target of hit men and women everywhere. While not as good as the 1st film in the series, it is right on par with the 2nd with ratcheted up action and body count. The ever expanding canvas of the world and the inventive action pieces continue to be the benchmark for how to do an action franchise right. Add in additional cast such as Halle Berry and you have a winning formula. Bring on John Wick 4!
- DirectorGail MancusoStarsJosh GadDennis QuaidKathryn PrescottA dog finds the meaning of his own existence through the lives of the humans he meets.Another solid film in the "Dog's" franchise that manages to bring enough heart and soul with entertainment.
