The Other Mexican Directors
Alfonso Cuarón, Alejandro G. Iñárritu and Guillermo del Toro, The Three Amigos, have put Mexican cinema in the spotlight, winning five of the last six directing Oscars and making films that sum over 70 nominations since 2006.
But they are far from being the only Mexican directors, and many others have recognition either from critics or box office both in Mexico and abroad.
From these other Mexican directors, whose filmography would you like to explore the most? if you are already familiar with them, who is your favorite?

Hermosillo was one of the most successful Mexican directors. Born in Aguascalientes, a small city in central Mexico, Hermosillo's films dissected the hypocrisy of Mexican middle class and "torn the curtain" behind which many perversities are hidden. He became an important figure in Mexican contemporary cinema, and was known for treating themes of sexual diversity from a personal approach. One of the few openly gay Mexican directors, Hermosillo found great success with Doña Herlinda y su hijo (1985), a comedy about a mother of a gay doctor who manipulates her son, his male lover and his fiancée to fulfill her desire of becoming a grandmother. Homosexual themes in Hermosillo's films can be found in Matinee, El Cumpleaños del Perro, and Las apariencias engañan (1978). Hermosillo was also an explorer of film language. La Tarea is one of the most complex exercises in film style in recent years (the film consists of one long shot, from the POV of a camcorder). Hermosillo's films presented a fresh look at Mexican society. A strong advocate of digital cinema, he made ten feature films in this format.Main accolades: 4 times Ariel Award Winner. Mario Van Peebles is a highly regarded director, actor, producer and writer. His directorial skills can be seen in the retelling of the epic mini-series "Roots" starring Forest Whitaker and Matthew Goode. Van Peebles has directed award-winning shows such as the recent hit "Empire" and "The Last Ship," as well as "Sons of Anarchy," "Lost," "Damages," and "Boss." As an actor Van Peebles has credits are as equally impressive.
An independent filmmaker to his core, Van Pebbles grew up watching Melvin Van Peebles, his maverick filmmaker father. A true master craftsman in his own right, Van Peebles is defined as a director, screenwriter, playwright, novelist and composer; known for funding his own work.
His many talents can be seen in films like his directorial breakout hit "New Jack City," "Posse" and "Panther;" plus Michael Mann's Oscar® nominated "Ali," in which he received critical acclaim for his role as real life minister and human rights activist Malcom X; the multi-award-winning "Cotton Club" written and directed by Francis Ford Coppola; Clint Eastwood's "Heartbreak Ridge;" and several projects with Ava DuVernay.
Throughout his career, Van Peebles has brought challenging, compelling material to the screen, including his hip hop coming-of-age film "We the Party," for which he wrote, directed and produced; his documentary short "Bring You're a Game;" and, of course, "Baadasssss!" This was Van Peebles' odyssey about the making of his father's groundbreaking film "Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song" and was one of Ebert and Roeper's ten best movies of the year for 2004.
As a director, Van Pebbles has affected unusually strong performances from his fellow actors. They often remark that he creates a collaborative climate where they feel free to do their best work. He believes his background as an actor helps him approach the actor's character development process internally. Conversely, he believes being a director has made him a more trusting, nuanced actor. Being able to do both is like creative crop rotation for Van Peebles. Not many directors get the privilege of being directed by other strong filmmakers. Acting for others is still "super exciting" to him.
In 1994, Hofstra University awarded Van Peebles an honorary doctorate of humane letters. After earning a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Columbia University, Van Peebles spent two years working at New York's Department of Environmental Protection before moving to Hollywood to try his hand at acting writing and directing.
In addition to directing and acting in features, Van Peebles is passionate about supporting education and eco-consciousness through media. With his reality show, Mario's Green House, he teamed up with his five children and his father to chronicle the Van Peebles family's often-humorous attempts to raise their eco-consciousness as they try to go green in Hollywood. Green "We never got to the full green, more like Olive green," jokes Van Peebles.Main accolades: 1 Independent Spirit Award nomination. 1 Philadelphia Film Festival Audience Award. 1 Directors Guild of America nomination.

Son of stage actor-director Ignacio Retes and actress Lucila Balzaretti, Gabriel Retes began acting classical theater when he was twelve years old. In early 70s he began directing short films in S8mm. and developed an extensive filmography in that format. Rigoberto Castañeda was born in Mexico City, studied in the Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica (Mexico City's film school). Helmer of several school short films, standing out "Necrophilia" and "Sin Sentido", making a worldwide recognition at film festivals. His dream has always been to make Horror films, one of his favorite genres, as Science Fiction and Fantasy.
He wrote his first feature based on a widely known Mexican legend, "La Llorona". Immediately optioned by Mexican mini studio Lemon Films. He directed the horror film based on his own script "Kilometer 31" - Km 31 - in 2007, starred by Iliana Fox ("Señor Ávila"), Raúl Méndez ("El Señor de los Cielos", "Narcos"), and the Spanish Adriá Collado ("Aquí no hay Quién Viva", "Lo que se Avecina"); the result, the highest-grossing film of 2007 in Mexico, and number one box-office Mexican horror film of all time. His first film also swept the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of Mexico awards, with 6 nominations and taking a total of 5 statuettes.
The success of this film creates the opportunity to direct the Hitchcockian psychological thriller "Blackout", released in 2008. The independent film premiered in Mexico, Uk, and other European countries. International figures starred the film, like Amber Tamblyn ("The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants", "Two and a Half Men", "House"), Armie Hammer ("Call Me by Your Name", "The Social Network", "Death on the Nile"), and Aidan Guillen ("Game of Thrones", "Peaky Blinders", "Bohemian Rhapsody").
During the same period, he created, directed, wrote, and produced the series "M13DOS" for Televisa, an anthology horror series in prime time for Mexican National channel XHGC. The series is one of the very few "horror themed" titles ever made for Mexican television.
In 2010, he debuted as a producer, carrying the bestselling book of Mexican writer Juan Jose Rodríguez entitled "Murder in a Chinese Laundry", the film was released in 2012 and finally titled "Reincarnation".
Rigoberto also has directed many different TV series, winning experience in a wide variety of genres. He led "Terminales" for Televisa, a successful drama series about a group of -out of the ordinary- terminal illness patients, becoming friends and supporting each other. Starring Ana Claudia Talancón ("El Crimen del Padre Amaro", "Arráncame la Vida") and Poncho Herrera ("La Reina del Sur", "Sense8", "The Exorcist" series) the series had such great success, a remake was requested in the United States.
Another series he directed was the action/drama for Channel 11 "Paramedics"; an intensity charged story of real-life cases from paramedics working at the Mexican Red Cross, starring Irene Azuela ("Hotel de los Secretos", "Monarca") and a multi-talented cast.
For Disney, Rigoberto directs a dramatic biography series, portraying the famous Mexican singer Juan Gabriel. "Hasta que te Conocí", starring Julián Román ("Historia de un Crimen"), was a massive success in Latin America and the Latin audiences in the United States, being nominated for the 45th International Emmy Awards.
After the resounding success of "KM31" he writes and directs the sequel, "Km31-2", also based on the crying lady legend and released in 2016, with Carlos Aragón ("Señor Ávila", "Cantinflas"), film nominated for several technical achievements in the Mexican Academy Awards.
Rigoberto directs Netflix original "Diablero", a fantastic new horror-comedy, demon-hunters concept, based on the book by Francisco Haghenbeck. The series starred by Horacio García Rojas ("La Carga", "Narcos"), and Christopher Von Uckermann ("Rebelde", "Kdabra"), gain a grand reception in Mexico, but surprisingly, more with Latin audiences in the United States.
In the last few months, Rigoberto has directed and adapted for the screen "Sin Origen" (Unsourced), a vampire story set in Mexico, and produced "Karem's Diary" a possession/exorcism film based on real events, both films to be released in 2020. He also directed all 8 episodes of an Amazon Zombies themed series ("Narcos Vs.
