- DirectorChuck SmithStarsBob DylanRichard ForemanAllen GinsbergBarbara Rubin's twenty-nine-minute experimental film 'Christmas on Earth' caused a sensation when it first screened in New York City in 1963. Its orgy scenes, double projections and overlapping images shattered artistic conventions and announced a powerful new voice in the city's underground film scene. All the more remarkable that the vision belonged to an 18-year-old girl. A virtual Zelig of the '60s, Barbara Rubin introduced Andy Warhol to the Velvet Underground, Bob Dylan to Kabbalah and bewitched Allen Ginsberg. The same unbridled creativity that inspired her to make films when women simply didn't, saw her breach yet another male domain, Orthodox Judaism, before her mysterious death at thirty-five years old. Life-long friend Jonas Mekas saved all her letters, creating a rich archive that film-maker Chuck Smith carefully sculpts into this fascinating portrait of a nearly forgotten artist. An avant-garde maverick, a rebel in a man's world, Barbara Rubin regains her rightful place in film history.

In a letter addressed to him in the form of a film, I return to Greece. The list of victims of the crisis has only grown longer, this destitution echoing another that Théo had sensed was coming: that of the massive arrival of refugees who find themselves trapped in Greece by the closure of the borders. - DirectorTsai Ming-liangStarsKang-sheng LeeTsai Ming-liangRadically rethinking the tired talking-heads template, Tsai Ming-liang's latest digital experiment turns the human face into a subject of dramatic intrigue. Comprised of a series of portrait shots of mostly anonymous individuals (Tsai devotees will no doubt recognize his long-time muse, Lee Kang-sheng), the film shrewdly deemphasizes language while reducing context to a bare minimum. In their place, the beauty and imperfections of each face take center stage. Accompanied by Ryuichi Sakamoto's soundtrack of dynamically modulating drone frequencies, Tsai's subjects variously speak, stare, and, at one point, sleep as the camera quietly registers the weight of personal history and accumulated experience writ beautifully across every last pore and crevasse.

- DirectorSol de CarvalhoStarsShcozo IchiyamaWilton BoeneHorácio GuiambaMABATA BATA is a trip to the African modern rural world in Mozambique, where the magical universe is still very present on people's life who have few options to face poverty. Their great dream, still now, is to reach the 'other side', where they believe they can find potential solutions for their lives. But what is the point of making plans if the war can keep you from accomplishing them? The film is an adaptation of THE DAY MABATA BATA EXPLODED, a short story by international awarded writer MIA COUTO, published in VOICES MADE NIGHT, the author's first short stories book. The original story talks about a shepherd boy who wants to go to school, but he is not allowed to do it because he has to take care of the herd for the lobolo (traditional dowry) of his uncle, who works in the mines of South Africa. Above all, he has to take care of MABATA BATA, the herd's biggest ox. In the adaptation, the film gains a magical dimension, with the introduction of a ceremony, with an invocation of the spirit that may or may not bless the marriage that was preceded by tragic events. The war is present: the ox explodes, the boy runs away, which triggers a series of events that will end unpredictably. The film was made in co-production with the Mozambican company PROMARTE, and the Portuguese company BANDO À PARTE.

- DirectorPhil CollinsStarsPhil CollinsMaxine PeakeWhat is the relationship between Manchester in 2018 and the Russian Revolution of 1917? The German philosopher Friedrich Engels, who wrote the Communist Manifesto with Karl Marx, lived for years in this British industrial city. Through this founder of communist theory, artist Phil Collins investigates what remains of his ideas in today's United Kingdom. How would Engels view the world today? And has anything changed for 'the working poor'? Collins not only brings Engels back to Manchester metaphorically, but also literally. We follow the journey that a statue of the philosopher makes from a Ukrainian village through Europe and back 'home'. With his visually layered Ceremony, a combination of documentary road movie and social-activist pamphlet, Collins proposes a renewed link between Manchester and the idea of communism as a radical and visionary alternative for the 'tyranny of capital' that still has a grip on our political, economic and emotional life.
