- DirectorAlfonso CuarónStarsSandra BullockGeorge ClooneyEd HarrisDr Ryan Stone, an engineer on her first time on a space mission, and Matt Kowalski, an astronaut on his final expedition, have to survive in space after they are hit by debris while spacewalking.I couldn't put any other movie here. This technological achievement is astonishing to say the least. The acting is near perfect. The effects are amazing. By the end of this 90 minute adventure, you're going to be gasping for breath. A fantastic film in every way.
- DirectorFrancis LawrenceStarsJennifer LawrenceJosh HutchersonLiam HemsworthKatniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark become targets of the Capitol after their victory in the 74th Hunger Games sparks a rebellion in the Districts of Panem. The Empire Strikes Back of the Hunger Games. Is it as great as Empire? No, I guess not. But it's nonetheless fantastic. I put this over Captain Phillips just because the pacing was just a tad bit better. That's right; this movie is just as emotion and exhausting as Captain Phillips was. And yes, it triumphs over the first Hunger Games by a significant margin, and I really liked that one too.
- DirectorPaul GreengrassStarsTom HanksBarkhad AbdiBarkhad AbdirahmanThe true story of Captain Richard Phillips and the 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates of the U.S.-flagged MV Maersk Alabama, the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in two hundred years.Tom Hanks' portrayal of Phillips is extraordinary. The pirates are fantastic actors. The story is gripping and pulse-pounding. Other than a little part around 2/3rds in the movie it slows down, but builds once again to a sensational climax and an amazing ending.
- DirectorPeter JacksonStarsIan McKellenMartin FreemanRichard ArmitageThe dwarves, along with Bilbo Baggins and Gandalf the Grey, continue their quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain, their homeland, from the dragon Smaug. The second movie in the hobbit trilogy is even better than the first, but still not as epic as the Lord of the Rings trilogy. That doesn't stop this movie from being entertaining, enthralling, and overall just great all-around.
- DirectorEvan GoldbergSeth RogenStarsJames FrancoJonah HillSeth RogenSix Los Angeles celebrities are stuck in James Franco's house after a series of devastating events just destroyed the city. Inside, the group not only have to face the apocalypse, but themselves.A comedy that's violent, raunchy, and incredibly funny movie with a spectacular cast of A-list celebrities. There wasn't two minutes of this movie where I wasn't laughing, and is by far the funniest movie released this year.
- DirectorStephen SommersStarsAnton YelchinAshley SommersLeonor VarelaIn a California desert town, a short-order cook with clairvoyant abilities encounters a mysterious man with a link to dark, threatening forces.Didn't hear about it? It wasn't released in the theaters due to copyright issues, but can still be watched on the internet and, from what I've heard, bought on amazon. This low-budget Dean Koontz adaptation was done incredibly well. The ending is absolutely fantastic.
- DirectorMarc ForsterStarsBrad PittMireille EnosDaniella KerteszFormer United Nations employee Gerry Lane traverses the world in a race against time to stop a zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments and threatens to destroy humanity itself. The best zombie movie released in years, period. Brad Pitt is the lead in this apocalyptic nightmare, and when things start to hit the fan, before you know it, you're cheering him on against all the impossible odds. Besides, it's not your average zombie-survival horror movie. It's a thriller that actually has an ending, and a good one at that.
- DirectorLouis LeterrierStarsJesse EisenbergCommonMark RuffaloAn FBI agent and an Interpol detective track a team of illusionists who pull off bank heists during their performances, and reward their audiences with the money.A very creative heist-movie. Several things didn't work in this film, but the pros far outweigh the cons. I loved the twist ending, as well as most of the characters.
- DirectorZack SnyderStarsHenry CavillAmy AdamsMichael ShannonAn alien child is evacuated from his dying world and sent to Earth to live among humans. His peace is threatened when other survivors of his home planet invade Earth. An above-par superhero movie that would've been higher if not for excessive use of CGI and the extended fight scenes. At it's core, there's a heart and the character of Superman was very relatable and likeable. General Zod was a great villain too.
