DISCOVER--25 sexy horror films that remembered to put in the sex and nudity
And let's face it, an extraordinary number of them don't, although curiously the marketing department usually remembers to imply it. This list is in chronological order. I've no objection to films being listed under their original foreign language titles, but all attempts to put it in alphabetical order were constantly stymied by the IMDB's infuriating habit of putting films under their second or third alternate titles, rather than the one they are best known for (and indeed often released on DVD as).

- DirectorBruno GantillonStarsDominique DelpierreAlfred BaillouMireille SauninTwo French girls get lost in the woods and accidentally enter the realm of sorceress Morgana Le Fay - who gives them the choice of either staying young forever as her lovers, or rot in a dungeon for eternity.Or, to put it another way, bizarre dreamlike fantasy about two girls on a driving holiday in France who stumble into a world of witchcraft and the supernatural. In the tradition of Jean Rollin.
- DirectorJean RollinStarsMarie-Pierre CastelMireille DargentPhilippe GastéTwo girls on the run get lost in the French countryside, and wind up in a haunted chateau occupied by an ailing vampire and his servants. Here's the real Jean Rollin, with what's better known as Requiem for a Vampire... A bizarre dreamlike fantasy about two girls on the run from the law in France, who stumble into a world of vampirism and the supernatural...
- DirectorJean RollinStarsSandra JulienJean-Marie DurandJacques RobiollesA young honeymooning couple stop for the night at an ancient castle. Unbeknownst to them, the castle is home to a horde of vampires, who have their own plans for the couple. This is Shiver of the Vampires, one of Jean Rollin's finest. With the perfect body of Sandra Julien, who is shown to better effect here than in many of her lame-o porn films. That's not her on the Redemption sleeve, by the way...
- DirectorNicolas RoegStarsJulie ChristieDonald SutherlandHilary MasonA married couple grieving the recent death of their young daughter are in Venice when they encounter two elderly sisters, one of whom is psychic and brings a warning from beyond.Sold to the public on the strength of its explicit sex scene, which was deliberately shot to be humdrum and matter-of-fact, this is in fact a superb psychic thriller, incredibly suspenseful and unnerving. A masterpiece.
- DirectorJesús FrancoStarsLina RomayJack TaylorAlice ArnoA beautiful female vampire lures men to their doom.Introducing the stunning Lina Romay. The film, a typical Jess Franco sleaze-and-cheese party, never surpasses the unforgettable opening iconic image of Romay striding through the mist in nothing but boots, belt and cape. But it certainly tries. A thousand restless nights start here.
- DirectorDenis SandersStarsWilliam SmithAnitra FordVictoria VetriA powerful cosmic force is turning Earth women into queen bees who kill men by wearing them out sexually.Bleak and banal but strangely atmospheric Z-grade low-budget sci-fi, showcasing the lovely Victoria Vetri.
- DirectorJoseph W. SarnoStarsNadia HenkowaAnke SyringUlrike ButzA lesbian vampire's soul is kept on in the bodies of her descendants. This is actually Joe Sarno's Vampire Ecstasy, which has loads of nudity but is not remotely erotic. It has atmosphere by the truckload however, and is strangely compelling, despite going on a bit.
- DirectorJesús FrancoStarsAlice ArnoRobert WoodsHoward VernonTwo wealthy aristocrats lure a virginal girl to a Spanish island for a night of sex, death and cannibalism.Better known as Countess Perverse, this combination of cannibalism and Cornell's Most Dangerous Game climaxes with a naked Alice Arno hunting an equally naked Lina Romay around a Mediterranean island. A superb print was recently released on DVD by Mondo Macabre.
- DirectorJean RollinStarsJoëlle CoeurJohn RicoWilly BraqueA gang of pirates rape the two sole survivors of a ship wreck. The violated girls are rescued by the strange inhabitants of a supposedly haunted island, where they are granted supernatural powers to strike revenge against the pirates. With the astonishingly beautiful Joelle Couer, among other pleasures. Pirates, ghosts, clowns, hypnotists, and spooky ruins... it could be Scooby-Doo if it wasn't for the sex, nudity, and murder. Jean Rollin's masterpiece, also known as Les Demoniaques, and not to be confused with Jess Franco's Demoniac. For this, and numbers 2, 3, and 14 in this list make sure you purchase the slightly more pricey Encore editions; you'll only regret it later if you don't. The booklets and deleted scenes are not to be missed, particularly on this one.
- DirectorJesús FrancoStarsPamela StanfordGuy DelormeLina RomayA man is tormented by an ex-lover, Lorna, who posseses a strange power over a women, including the man's daughter.Weirdly unsettling, directed by Jess Franco under one of his numerous pseudonyms, and featuring quite a bit of rampant exhibitionism from the leading ladies while the male lead roams around a barren 1970s landscape.
- DirectorLuigi BatzellaStarsRita CalderoniStelio CandelliGiuseppe MatteiItalian Gothic horror that tells the tale of a man who stops at a remote castle hoping to get medical help for an injured woman, only to find the inhabitants mirror the darker sides of the woman and himself.Better known as Nude for Satan, a shamelessly brazen come-on title that usually means nobody gets nude for Satan (Jon's first rule of DVD consumer advice: if it has Naked in the title, nobody gets naked). But as it happens, quite a few people get nude for Satan in this ridiculous but enjoyable Twilight Zone-ish gothic fantasy. Daft but fun.
- DirectorJosé Ramón LarrazStarsMarianne MorrisAnulka DziubinskaMurray BrownA pair of women lure passers-by to their countryside mansion to feed on them to satisfy their need for blood.A bleak typically '70s British horror, saved by a European director who puts the emphasis on the vampire girls but still delivers the requisite gore and horror. Doesn't quite work, but enough of it does. A recognised cult classic.
- DirectorJesús FrancoStarsLina RomayCatherine LafferièreJesús FrancoA madman conducts a private inquisition to exorcise demons by torturing women to death. This is actually Jess Franco's Exorcism, although it is known under several other titles as well, including Sexorcism, Demoniac, and The Sadist of Notre Dame. Lots of unintentional laughs to be had. Just ensure you obtain the longest cut available, as it's all about Lina Romay and the other girls who get their kit off.
- DirectorJean RollinStarsJean-Loup PhilippeAnnie BelleNatalie PerreyFrederick sees a photograph of a ruined seaside castle, which triggers a strange childhood memory. He then goes on a strange quest to find the castle and the beautiful woman who lives there.Better known as Lips of Blood. The fifth and final of Jean Rollin's erotic vampire fantasies of the 1970s. Ignore yet another inappropriate sleeve design, there are several others to choose from including the bells and whistles Encore addition.
- DirectorBrian De PalmaStarsSissy SpacekPiper LaurieAmy IrvingCarrie White, a shy, friendless teenage girl who is sheltered by her domineering, religious mother, unleashes her telekinetic powers after being humiliated by her classmates at her senior prom.A borderline entry, as this classic template for every shock ending of the next thirty years is more about sex than showing anything. A tour-de-force from Brian De Palma, who never did anything anywhere near as good again. Sissy Spacek is quite extraordinary in what amounts to three different roles--mouse, prom queen, and demonic monster. Much copied but never bettered.
- DirectorMichel LemoineStarsMichel LemoineNathalie ZeigerHoward VernonA businessman, who's a descendant of a brutal Russian count, can't discern hallucinations from reality when he sees visions of extreme violence against young women staying at his castle.Better known as Seven Women for Satan. Absolutely mental.
- DirectorCarlos PuertoJuan Piquer SimónStarsÁngel ArandaSandra AlbertiMariana KarrA young couple are tricked into going into a sinister house where a coven of devil-worshipers waits for them.Better--and more sensibly--known as Satan's Blood. The clue is often in the cover art, IMDB. More bleak discomfiting Twilight Zone-y weirdness from the '70's, with the usual pleasingly ambivalent attitude towards sex and nudity, of which there is plenty.
- DirectorMario BianchiStarsJaqueline DupréMariangela GiordanoAldo SambrellIn the crypt of the remote castle of the Aguilars lies the recently-deceased body of Maria. Her husband Antonio is a jealous bully, his mute brother Ignazio is in a wheelchair peeping on his caretaker Sol, a novice. Also present are Miria, the couple's virginal daughter, and Isidro, a factotum who fears Satan's power. A frequent visitor is Juan Suarez, a doctor who wants Miria in a sanatorium for a month. She doesn't want to go. Isidro tries to exorcize the castle's evil spirits. Bodies pile up. Is Miria's mother truly dead, and who is Satan's tool?Translated to the deliciously trashy Satan's Baby Doll. A sleaze-fest.
- DirectorJesús FrancoStarsLina RomayAntonio MayansMabel EscañoA group of vacationing waitresses visit a resort hotel on the Canary Islands, only to find that the former monastery's monks nearby have returned as living blind dead.Better known as Mansion of the Living Dead. A hopeless effort from Jess Franco, who--being completely incapable of delivering anything remotely resembling a horror film at this dreary and deserted run-down tourist trap he's chosen to film in--fortunately concentrates on getting the clothes off his four sexpot leads.
- DirectorTim KincaidStarsTeresa FarleyLance LewmanFrances ShermanThe Manhattan General Hospital admitted a string of young women raped by something otherworldly. Dr. Pace and Detective Andriotti try and isolate the strange organic material found on the victims to find the fiend. What could potentially have been a low-budget classic to accompany other '80's sleaze and cheese like The Terminator, Trancers, etc. etc. is botched by appalling acting from the leads and a total lack of help from script or director. Fortunately, a fair number of girl-next-door types take their clothes off for as long as possible. Good save.
- DirectorTerry M. WestStarsJennifer LeighSergio JonesClark Beasley Jr.Six parapsychologists investigate a reputed haunted mansion and are set upon by three flesh-eating succubus ladies under the control of the sinister warlock owner bent on finding a mysterious amulet to give himself more power.A few camera angles short of being a classic, this fannish fantasy divided the audience right down the love it or hate it middle. Gory, with a fair bit of nudity. But it could have been better. By the way, the plot synopsis above is a spoiler. Nuffin' to do wiv me, guv.
- DirectorLloyd A. SimandlStarsKira Reed LorschJames LuksonEva NemethA group of women while visiting a castle studying the history of a mad noblewoman from medieval times finds themselves drawn back into time and into her evil lair where they are expected to become her new handmaidens and endure her debauchery.Early appearances from Bound Heat beauties Lucie Haluzikova, Eva Nemeth, and Marie Vecek in this vampire castle yarn featuring Sexcetera's Kira Reed as a Countess Bathory type. Fun.
- StarsJennifer LimSean PertweeDominique PinonWhen Evil Calls centres around the mysterious appearance of a text message that grants the students of at Wilburn High School their wildest desires."I know, let's make a horror film and cut it up into chunks for people to watch on their mobile 'phones. What could possibly go wrong?". Based on vintage chestnut The Monkey's Paw, one segment has a guy wishing for x-ray glasses and watching the girls in the gym play basketball naked. Fun as it is, you'll see even more on the Making of...
- DirectorLloyd A. SimandlStarsAndrea NemcovaSabine MalloryKira Reed LorschBound Heat's take on the Countess Bathory legend. It doesn't surpass Borowczyk's Immoral Tales for eroticism, but it's not bad.
- DirectorAlexandre AjaStarsElisabeth ShueJerry O'ConnellRichard DreyfussAfter a sudden underwater tremor sets free scores of the prehistoric man-eating fish, an unlikely group of strangers must band together to stop themselves from becoming fish food for the area's new razor-toothed residents. What could be more fun than a CGI octodinosharktopus cheese-o-rama? One with loads of skin and a lengthy skinny dipping session, of course. Having got this one so right, there was no way to screw up the sequel, right? Wrong...
