- DirectorDustin HoffmanStarsMaggie SmithMichael GambonBilly ConnollyAt a home for retired musicians, the annual concert to celebrate Composer Giuseppe Verdi's birthday is disrupted by the arrival of Jean (Dame Maggie Smith), an eternal diva and the former wife of one of the residents.A fitting start to 2013. Dustin Hoffman's directorial debut was a very competently made charming film with wonderful performances from all the cast with special mention to Tom Courtney who gave a real standout turn. Hoffman also accomplishes what others haven't been able to , and manages to bring the true comedic talents of Billy Connolly to the big screen. An absolute pleasure from start to finish.
- DirectorChristopher McQuarrieStarsTom CruiseRosamund PikeRichard JenkinsA homicide investigator digs deeper into a case involving a trained military sniper responsible for a mass shooting.A very competent investigative thriller, this and a pleasant surprise. I am not sure if this is just down to my low expectations given Cruise's recent output (Knight & Day a career low and MI4 offering little new to the franchise) but it was an enjoyable film that I would recommend. It was a tad slack in the editing and could definitely have had 10-15 minutes removed, which I feel would have benefited it enormously but the performances are reasonable and nothing else offended. Another plus point, in my book, was employing Werner Herzog as the main villain. When on screen his distinctive German voice befitted the film hugely but he wasn't used nearly enough and given a bit more to do could have created a truly great villain. Shame. All told a very good Friday night at the movies which, ultimately, is all you want from most Tom Cruise films. So well played Mr Cruise.
- DirectorRobert LorenzStarsClint EastwoodAmy AdamsJohn GoodmanA daughter tries to remedy her dysfunctional relationship with her ailing father, a decorated baseball scout, by helping him in a recruiting trip which could be his last.I only really wanted to see this as I was intrigued to see why Clint Eastwood felt the need to act again. I hoped it was because there was something I hadn't seen him do before. Well, there is nothing on offer here that I haven't seen any of the actors do before, including Clint. I think, the only reason Clint agreed to be in this is to give his long standing assistant director, Robert Lorentz a shot in the main seat and his name helped green light the project. That said, it isn't an offensive film, just one we've seen countless times before. The direction was quite flat and lacking any real spark that may have elevated the feelings the film was trying to created but it failed to emote any real emotion despite it's attempts. The film is mesmerizing in it's predictability and very by the numbers. Not great and a shame that it may well end up being Clints' last film as an actor rather than the supreme Gran Torino.
- DirectorJohn LuessenhopStarsAlexandra DaddarioTania RaymondeScott EastwoodA young woman travels to Texas to collect an inheritance. Little does she know that an encounter with a chainsaw-wielding killer is part of the reward.Well, I have to watch any film that has Chainsaw in it's title! I didn't know an awful lot about this version of a "Chainsaw" film. It didn't know if it was a re-boot, re-imagining, prequel, sequel or what. I just knew it was a Leatherface film in 3D this time which poked my interest, somewhat. Well, it turns out it is more a direct sequel to the very first film (I thought there had already been one of those?). I won't go into the plot as it can be summarized in IMDB but suffice to say that there is little going for this other than some fanboy geekyness about seeing parts of the original in 3D and polished up and seeing The Family fleshed out (no pun intended) a bit more. The cast are uniformly standard teen slasher victims and the gore is there, but not in abundance compared to the other, better, Chainsaw remakes and prequels. For horror fans only who have an interest in the franchise (and which one us doesn't) but everyone else could watch something better.
- DirectorPeter SegalStarsSteve CarellAnne HathawayAlan ArkinMaxwell Smart, a highly intellectual but bumbling spy working for the CONTROL agency, is tasked with preventing a terrorist attack from rival spy agency KAOS.Brilliant, wonderful, silly, fun spoof of all Bond/espionage movies. Loved it! All cast are, uniformly, on comedic form and recommend to anyone seeking a laugh.
- DirectorJ.A. BayonaStarsNaomi WattsEwan McGregorTom HollandThe story of a tourist family in Thailand caught in the destruction and chaotic aftermath of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.Wasn't sure what to expect from this. The film is really standard fare until the wave hits and then the movie becomes rivetting. The film's tone could have been misjudged but I think Juan Antonio Beyona (The Orphange) got it spot on. The Tsunami footage is incredible and shows just how unrelenting and powerful it must have been. How these people survived is truly remarkable and the story presented before your eyes is told incredibly well. Take your hankies and don't drink too much as you will not want to miss anything.
