- DirectorSam MendesStarsDaniel CraigJavier BardemNaomie HarrisJames Bond's loyalty to M is tested when her past comes back to haunt her. When MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost. Not only the best Bond film in many decades, the best film I saw this year period. This film took the best of the previous two films and combined them into one and has set the course for great things to come.
- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsChristian BaleTom HardyAnne HathawayEight years after the Joker's reign of chaos, Batman is coerced out of exile with the assistance of the mysterious Selina Kyle in order to defend Gotham City from the vicious guerrilla terrorist Bane. For once, a comic to film franchise trilogy ends at an equal level as it started. This is not The Dark Knight, but it beautifully ends Nolan's trilogy.
- DirectorJoss WhedonStarsRobert Downey Jr.Chris EvansScarlett JohanssonEarth's mightiest heroes must come together and learn to fight as a team if they are going to stop the mischievous Loki and his alien army from enslaving humanity. The Marvel strategy of releasing individual films previous to this pays off handsomely when all the characters are combined. A slow beginning builds to a very satisfying end. Can't think of a more perfect combining of separate solo characters.
- DirectorGary RossStarsJennifer LawrenceJosh HutchersonLiam HemsworthKatniss Everdeen voluntarily takes her younger sister's place in the Hunger Games: a televised competition in which two teenagers from each of the twelve Districts of Panem are chosen at random to fight to the death.Jennifer Lawrence owns the screen, period. This is not your typical action film. It is a slow character build and there is a lot told without any kind of dialog. I absolutely love this film.
- DirectorMarc WebbStarsAndrew GarfieldEmma StoneRhys IfansAfter Peter Parker is bitten by a genetically altered spider, he gains newfound, spider-like powers and ventures out to save the city from the machinations of a mysterious reptilian foe. There were doubters aplenty with this. But Mark Web and Co. flat knocked this out of the park. Much more practical Spiderman rather than CGI Spiderman and a familiar tale re-told in a more contemporary spin. Garfield and Stone exhibit 100 times more chemistry together than McGuire and Dunst could muster in 3 films combined.
- DirectorPeter JacksonStarsMartin FreemanIan McKellenRichard ArmitageA reluctant Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, sets out to the Lonely Mountain with a spirited group of dwarves to reclaim their mountain home and the gold within it from the dragon Smaug.Admittedly longer than it needs to be, still, it was like going back to an old friend's home. It is the least critically loved of Jackson's Tolkien adapted films, but fits nicely into the world he has created.
- DirectorBill CondonStarsKristen StewartRobert PattinsonTaylor LautnerAfter the birth of Renesmee/Nessie, the Cullens gather other vampire clans in order to protect the child from a false allegation that puts the family in front of the Volturi.Free of the whole three-way love triangle and constant lovelorn stares, the franchise, IMO, ends with the best film since the first film. Stewart, free of the human confines, she blossoms as the finally turned vampire. The spin on the book's ending was great fun.
- DirectorAdam ShankmanStarsJulianne HoughDiego BonetaTom CruiseA small-town girl and a city boy meet on the Sunset Strip while pursuing their Hollywood dreams. This was not the best film I saw this year in the theater, but it was definitely the most fun I had. It is a total 80's kid dream movie. Cruise is at his most over-the-top and best in this film. I could watch this once a week for a year and not tire of it.
- DirectorAlex KurtzmanStarsChris PineElizabeth BanksMichelle PfeifferWhile settling his recently deceased father's estate, a salesman discovers he has a sister whom he never knew about, leading both siblings to re-examine their perceptions about family and life choices. The quietest film I saw this year and one of the most entertaining. Performances are fantastic all around. For a film like this that lacks much of the punch of the previous films listed, for it to be in my top 10 it had to really pack a WOW factor and it does. You really need to give this film a look.
- DirectorMike McCoyScott WaughStarsAlex VeadovRoselyn SanchezNestor SerranoAn elite team of Navy SEALs embark on a covert mission to recover a kidnapped CIA agent.I have watched this film more times than any other film on my top 10 list. It is one of those films that no matter how many times you watch, you are absolutely pulled into the action. There is something to be said for having the real-deal military do action.
