My Favorite Photoplays
Started in 2010 this list of films (and in a number of cases works kindred to this medium) are favorites that I have accumulated since then.
As opposed to having them ranked according to some notions of preference any given new favorite is added to the top of the list, hence it starts with most recent additions and goes back in time. This also makes it function as a sort of chronicle of my adventures in film that may or may not exhibit some personal evolution or at least reflect some changes of interests, preoccupations, tastes, etc. over the years.
It mostly comprises of first-time viewings, but also features rewatches in cases where I hadn't held the film in high personal regard before but which upon rewatch made a big impression on me. Those rewatches I have marked with a "°" in the comments.
Within "[ ]" I added "personalized genre descriptions".

- DirectorHenwar RodakiewiczWithout sound, in three movements. Title cards declare that what a person likes and his manner of liking them reveals character. There are long looks at forms and rhythms. The light makes dappled patterns. In the second movement, a leafy tree branch gives way to water then shots of the sky and clouds. The third movement returns to the shore, with long takes looking out far, past the beach to outcroppings under the horizon. Small breakers interrupt the patterns of light on water.

The controversial bill sparked immediate outrage over widespread fear of arbitrary detention and politically motivated trials that would decimate Hong Kong's autonomy under 'one country, two systems.' - DirectorMarc AllégretA love partner of the writer André Gide, as well as his travel companion in their journey to the French colonies of Central Africa, Marc Allégret decided to film their 11-month wandering in the exotic continent, though stripping away the element of adventure. Contrary to the newly established type of documentaries, such as Nanook of the North, that made use of suspense to permeate the action with epic qualities, Allégret, despite having no prior training in cinema, proved to be a pioneer by creating a strictly ethnographically-driven type of documentary. His camera's approach is tactful as he captures the glance of a privileged white man in a world of natural and spiritual purity, paving the way to a new cinema genre.

- DirectorDavid LarcherIt begins with a meditative, vibrating drone in the dark auditorium and ends with a word scratched onto the film strip: REFLECT - an invitation to viewers to think about what they have seen, but also the description of one of the many techniques used by David Larcher in his two-and-a-half-hour experimental film epic. Such dual and multiple meanings are a recurring motif in the film, as is the desire to decipher the foundational structures of cinematic perception. There is a fascination for the psychedelic expansion of consciousness and for the complex web of relationships between experience and memory - the film can be read as both a hippie-esque, elliptical diary film as well as an encyclopaedia of experimental image systems. "Mare's tail" is the term used in England for elongated, fraying clouds resembling a horse's tail that herald a coming rain. And just as one must learn to first see this symbol and then interpret it, David Larcher teaches us cinematic seeing in a kind of creation story of visual representation, which is at the same time a section of the director's own history, bathed in the period colours of late 1960s.

- DirectorPaul CollinsAnlo SepulvedaStarsTony Two Hawks MolinaJeremy GutierrezJacqueline ClaireYakona, meaning "water rising" in the language of the indigenous people of the San Marcos River in Texas. This multi-award winning film is a visual journey through the crystal clear waters of the San Marcos River and its headwaters at Spring Lake, which is home to seven threatened or endangered species. The story takes you from prehistoric times, through the modern era, on an impressionistic journey from the perspective of the river. While filming, many extraordinary changes occurred surrounding the springs and river, including the removal of the Aquarena Springs theme park, the restoration of Spring Lake and the uncovering of ancient human remains. We follow the river from source to sea, through the changing seasons, interpreting the river's time and memory by documenting the relationship between the natural world and humanity. Yakona speaks directly with its beauty while appealing to a higher nature. You begin to understand this is a river that yearns to remain unchanged despite everything that is changing around it.
