Books and the Movies That Undid Them
you ever read a good book and then get excited when you find out it was made into a movie.
YOU EXCITEDLY SIT DOWN WITH YOUR POPCORN! dud.
Degrading plot and characters. killing off people who never died in the book. miss casting parts so bad, that it destroys the story. the emotional effect of the original story not seen much less recognized.

- DirectorHenry KingStarsTyrone PowerMaureen O'HaraLaird CregarAn ex-pirate contends with rowdy buccaneers and a love/hate relationship with an aristocratic woman who's tougher than she seems.Only thing that is the same is the title. Maybe if you watch the movie first you can enjoy it. I just cringe.
- DirectorMichael CurtizStarsErrol FlynnBrenda MarshallClaude RainsGeoffrey Thorpe, a buccaneer, is hired by Queen Elizabeth I to nag the Spanish Armada. The Armada is waiting for the attack on England and Thorpe surprises them with attacks on their galleons where he shows his skills on the sword.Once again, What happened to the plot of the book. This movie can stand on its own but nothing like the book
- DirectorAshley LazarusFreddie FrancisStarsRichard HarrisAnn TurkelGordon JacksonOn a cargo ship converted into a cruise-liner, First Officer John Carter foils the plan of international hijackers to use his vessel as bait for a passing U.S. Treasury ship carrying gold bullion.how you can take a thrilling book and change it to an amoral romp is beyond me.
- DirectorEtienne PérierStarsAnthony HopkinsJack HawkinsRobert MorleyIn a vein similar to the James Bond movies, British Agent Philip Calvert (Sir Anthony Hopkins) is on a mission to determine the whereabouts of a ship that disappeared near the coast of Scotland. It was fine until the very end. They had to change the ending the dogs.
- DirectorMark RobsonStarsFrank SinatraTrevor HowardRaffaella CarràAn American POW leads a group of mainly British prisoners to escape from the Germans in WWII.once again had to change the ending. terrible. plus they added a woman to the cast. this was a prison train trying to escape, no time to stop for a thrown in moral issue. I felt it detracted form the main story.
- StarsElizabeth GarvieDavid RintoulMoray WatsonWhile the arrival of wealthy gentlemen sends her marriage-minded mother into a frenzy, willful and opinionated Elizabeth Bennet matches wits with haughty Mr. Darcy.dull
- DirectorEarl BellamyStarsHoward DuffVictor JoryMargaret FieldWhile doing a good deed, the title hero has to shoot a man in self defense, and go into hiding. His peace is interrupted when a cattle baron rides into his territory, and decides to settle there. When no locals want to sell, Jared Tetlow turns to murdering the locals with his hired gun Dee Havalik, and starting a range war. Blackjack finds he has to kill the Tetlow gang off one by one, to restore peace in this movie sharing nothing in common with its real-name historical outlaw.book called "Kilkenny". movie. eck
- DirectorBernard KnowlesStarsJean KentGuy RolfePaul DupuisAn English governess marries a complete stranger while he is on his deathbed. After he dies, she inherits his estate but is soon involved with some French spies working for Napoleon. At the same time, she finds herself attracted to her late husband's cousin.another one of my favorite authors ,Georgette Heyer. with all of her novels to choose from ,why this one?
the answer maybe somebody new how badly they were going to butcher it. this novel was not her best.
She is one person who can write romantic comedies. Most of her books should be made into movies but not if this is what they would do to them.
One of the biggest problems with movies is they almost always bring modern morals to the movie and that throws all the comedy and plot and everything else away. When your novel deals with proprieties of a past area; one should not be surprised when the movie flops when you bring modern proprieties to it. - DirectorRichard BoleslawskiStarsMarion DaviesGary CooperJean ParkerUnion spy Gail Loveless impersonates a black maid in the early days of the Civil War, but complications arise when she falls in love with a Confederate officer.made a hash of it.
there is a song I like from the movie, called "Sleepyhead"
The book showed the emotional struggle a whole lot better. I see this as more of a comedy. plus they killed off a person who did not die in the book. eck - DirectorMichael AndersonJohn FarrowStarsDavid NivenCantinflasFinlay CurrieA Victorian Englishman bets that with the new steamships and railways he can circumnavigate the globe in eighty days.my problem with the movie is the leading lady. I do not think she could make you believe she was princess of anything. It gets worse not only was she suppose to play a princess but an Indian princess. wrong race, wrong disposition. probably not her fault. whom ever cast the role failed epically. I think every culture has certain presence that you can feel, I hate to see that disrespected. If It calls for an Indian actress cast one. the jacki chan version was worse
- DirectorCy EndfieldStarsMichael CraigJoan GreenwoodMichael CallanDuring the Civil War a group of Union soldiers, a Confederate and a civilian escape the stockade using a hot-air balloon and end up on a strange Pacific island.words fail me.
- DirectorHugh HudsonStarsChristopher LambertAndie MacDowellRalph RichardsonA missing heir of respected Scottish family, raised in African jungles by animals, finally returns to his estate only to realize that difference between the two worlds is really significant.don't watch it ever.
- DirectorKevin ConnorStarsPatrick WayneDoug McClureSarah DouglasIn 1919, a British expedition in the Antarctica region is searching for a lost American explorer and finds a hidden prehistoric world instead. This is a sequel the the movie "land that time for got" which was ok.
then in this one they kill off one of the main characters of the previous movie. when in the book both survive. eck. Kill two books with one movie how about that. - DirectorRoger MichellStarsAmanda RootCiarán HindsSusan FleetwoodTheatrical film of Persuasion with Ciaran Hinds & Amanda Root. Directed by Roger Michell.dull and a miscast hero
- DirectorPeter CollinsonStarsRichard CrennaStephen BoydRosanna SchiaffinoAn amnesiac gunfighter, aided by a sympathetic outlaw, tries to discover his own identity and past.remember what I said about degrading characters
- DirectorTom GriesStarsCharles BronsonBen JohnsonRichard CrennaJohn Deakin is being transported, as a prisoner, on a train with supplies and medicine to Fort Humboldt, Nevada.this one just missed. you might give it a try and see what you think
- DirectorKen AnnakinStarsJohn MillsDorothy McGuireJames MacArthurA Swiss family must survive being shipwrecked on a deserted island.I actually like this movie. It is a good family movie. Nothing like the book. four one thing there were four sons in the book. If I remember the missing son's name is Jack. It has been many years since I read it.
It was Jack character in the movie but with the name of the youngest son Francis. Fritz left the island and it was Ernest that staid.
Needles to say they mixed quiet a few things up.
I don't think there was a girl caught by pirates either. More like a man marooned. my memory is a little hazy on this part. - DirectorGeorge CukorStarsSophia LorenAnthony QuinnMargaret O'BrienStory of theatrical troupe that travels through the Old West.An okay book at best.
never watched all of this movie just could not take the punishment
