2014 Movies
I'm doing the same thing as last year. I like to keep track of what I watch and hopefully some of my comments will be useful and/or entertaining. My movie goal of this year is to finish watching the AFI top 100 movies that I haven't seen yet.

- DirectorJoel SchumacherStarsMatthew McConaugheySandra BullockSamuel L. JacksonIn Canton, Mississippi, young lawyer Jake Brigance and his aide Harry Vonner defend black Carl Lee Hailey accused of killing two white men who raped his ten-year-old daughter Tonya, inciting violent retribution. From John Grisham's novel.(1/2)
- DirectorSteve McQueenStarsChiwetel EjioforMichael Kenneth WilliamsMichael FassbenderIn the antebellum United States, Solomon Northup, a free Black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery.(1/5)
Great movie. Extremely hard to watch. It was extremely well done and had a great story, but I didn't feel as though the director did anything new or unique. The acting was fantastic especially considering literally everyone is British in real life. - DirectorSpike JonzeStarsJoaquin PhoenixAmy AdamsScarlett JohanssonIn a near future, a lonely writer develops an unlikely relationship with an operating system designed to meet his every need.(1/5)
I love this movie. It does have some weird moments (intentionally), but it is extremely interesting and well done. This is a unique story and it really made me think afterwards. This is one of my new favorites. - DirectorFrancis Ford CoppolaStarsMarlon BrandoAl PacinoJames CaanThe aging patriarch of an organized crime dynasty transfers control of his clandestine empire to his reluctant son.(1/7)
Fantastic storytelling. I think my generation does a poor job with long movies because I may have gotten bored in the middle. I do appreciate how complex and well made the movie is. It has to be a great movie if it can make a violent gangster so lovable. - DirectorAlfred HitchcockStarsJames StewartGrace KellyWendell CoreyA wheelchair-bound photographer spies on his neighbors from his Greenwich Village courtyard apartment window and, despite the skepticism of his fashion-model girlfriend, becomes convinced one of them has committed murder.(1/10)
I had much more fun watching this than the Godfather. I love how it is in the perspective of a man trapped in one place. Grace Kelly ain't too bad to look at either. This is a fun movie. - DirectorFrancis Ford CoppolaStarsAl PacinoRobert De NiroRobert DuvallThe early life and career of Vito Corleone in 1920s New York City is portrayed, while his son, Michael, expands and tightens his grip on the family crime syndicate.(1/11)
I felt the same way about this movie as the first. I did like seeing Michael's evolution. My favorite part of the movie was de Niro. Apparently Vito will always be my favorite character of the series. - DirectorJean-Marc ValléeStarsMatthew McConaugheyJennifer GarnerJared LetoIn 1985 Dallas, electrician and hustler Ron Woodroof works around the system to help AIDS patients get the medication they need after he is diagnosed with the disease.(1/19)
This movie is also hard to watch due to its material, but the acting holds it together. I thought this movie did a really good job of showing character arc and I'm very happy that the actors are getting rewarded accordingly. - DirectorJoseph L. MankiewiczStarsBette DavisAnne BaxterGeorge SandersSeemingly timid but secretly ruthless ingenue Eve Harrington insinuates herself into the lives of aging Broadway star Margo Channing and her circle of theater friends in this Oscar-winning story.(1/26)
I loved this movie. The actors were all great. I have old Hollywood fever. I especially loved Eve's character. She's kind of an evil badass. - DirectorDavid FisherStarsDavid FisherA filmmaker and his siblings research the experiences of their late father, who survived the Holocaust during World War II.(1/30)
- DirectorReginald HudlinStarsEddie MurphyRobin GivensHalle BerryA successful executive and womanizer finds his lifestyle choices have turned back on him when his new female boss turns out to be an even bigger deviant than he is.(2/1)
I love movies like this once in a while. They're really ridiculous and really fun. - DirectorWoody AllenStarsWoody AllenDiane KeatonTony RobertsAlvy Singer, a divorced Jewish comedian, reflects on his relationship with ex-lover Annie Hall, an aspiring nightclub singer, which ended abruptly just like his previous marriages.(2/1)
I usually like Woody Allen type humor, but I didn't actually like this movie as much as I thought I would. I did enjoy how Allen broke the 4th wall and there were some funny moments. I ended up watching this one tonight because Brandeis was randomly mentioned in the trailer. Brandeis represent. - DirectorBilly WilderStarsJack LemmonShirley MacLaineFred MacMurrayA Manhattan insurance clerk tries to rise in his company by letting its executives use his apartment for trysts, but office politics and his own romantic hopes complicate matters.(2/12)
I've never seen Shirley MacLaine in a movie from this era. She was great and I really liked the premise of the movie. It was very clever. - DirectorRobert AltmanStarsDonald SutherlandElliott GouldTom SkerrittThe staff of a Korean War field hospital uses humor and hijinks to keep their sanity in the face of the horror of war.(2/17)
I am squeamish so I got a little grossed out during some scenes, but the football game was pure gold. Sally Kellerman rocked this movie. She was hilarious. - DirectorWilliam FriedkinStarsGene HackmanRoy ScheiderFernando ReyA pair of NYPD detectives in the Narcotics Bureau stumble onto a heroin smuggling ring based in Marseilles, but stopping them and capturing their leaders proves an elusive goal.(2/17)
The car chase scene in this movie is epic still to this day. This movie is very well crafted and I really enjoyed it. Gene Hackman is great. - DirectorFrank CapraStarsJames StewartJean ArthurClaude RainsA naive youth leader is appointed to fill a vacancy in the U.S. Senate. His idealistic plans promptly collide with corruption at home and subterfuge from his hero in Washington, but he tries to forge ahead despite attacks on his character.(2/21)
This movie didn't stand the test of time as much as I hoped it would. It was still fun, but a lot of the child actors were terrible and hard to watch. It's funny that there were only 48 states during the movie. Sometimes I even forget about Hawaii and Alaska. Jimmy Stewart is young and adorable. I really liked the scene where the camera follows Stewart's hat rather than his face. - DirectorLotfy NathanStarsCocoPugFunmi SodipoPug, a young boy growing up on a combative West Baltimore block, finds solace in a group of illegal dirt bike riders known as The 12 O'Clock Boys.(2/22)
