Best to Worst (Oscar 2013)
This list is a bit different than the lists i usually make. I have decided to make a best to worst based on this year's best picture nominations. This is incredibly hard to do, because all of these are considered great movies, and i might even put my own life on the line by placing a movie at the bottom...Not really, but i might get some funny comments. Enjoy!
(PS: I don't consider any of these movies bad. Best to Worst are lists i make every month, where i rank something form best to worst. This doesn't always mean that whatever i place at the bottom is bad. It just means its what i consider the worst of out all entries in the list. What i mean is that Best to Worst doesn't necessarily mean "Good to Bad".

- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsLeonardo DiCaprioJonah HillMargot RobbieBased on the true story of Jordan Belfort, from his rise to a wealthy stock-broker living the high life to his fall involving crime, corruption and the federal government. My favorite movie of 2013, and a movie i absolutely love. I have always been a big martin scorsese fan, and he did not disappoint with "The Wolf of Wall Street". Although it's a good adaption of Jordan Belfort's memoir. It actually is even a better representation of Wall Street and it's ups and downs. This movie is crazy and thought provoking at the same time, and i haven't been this entertained in the cinema for a long time. It's everything i look for in a movie, and therefore is my favorite to win the Oscar's 2013. Is it possible it will win the best picture nomination? Nope, but i still think it deserves it .
- DirectorSpike JonzeStarsJoaquin PhoenixAmy AdamsScarlett JohanssonIn a near future, a lonely writer develops an unlikely relationship with an operating system designed to meet his every need. Her is a science fiction movie. But what makes it stand out from other movies in its genre, is that its actually a fantastic social commentary on our modern and future technology. Her is about a man's relationship with an A.I. One that bears a huge resemblance to Siri, the iphone A.I. I think what i like about "Her" so much is that it doesn't really make a big deal out of it. It could have been a comedy where every character reacted to his bizarre relationship with "Funny" comments. But instead the main character just has a normal relationship with the A.I. Her is a great romantic science fiction movie, that you absolutely should watch. Its thought provoking, entertaining and an all around great movie.
- DirectorSteve McQueenStarsChiwetel EjioforMichael Kenneth WilliamsMichael FassbenderIn the antebellum United States, Solomon Northup, a free Black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery. This movie has recieved a bit of critiscism for being "Just another slavery movie". And to those people i say...so? There are still interesting and horrifying stories about this time period, that the people should know about. 12 Years a Slave is exactly that. Its a horrifying and sad movie. When other movies have dealt with the topic of slavery, there has been always been this sort of "We cant show everything" shadow looming over them. 12 Years a Slave drops that notion completely. Its a fantastic movie, but also a movie that will make you cry your eyes out.
- DirectorDavid O. RussellStarsChristian BaleAmy AdamsBradley CooperA con man, Irving Rosenfeld, along with his seductive partner Sydney Prosser, is forced to work for a wild F.B.I. Agent, Richie DiMaso, who pushes them into a world of Jersey powerbrokers and the Mafia.Every oscar there is always this great drama film, that is a step above others by having a great script. This year, american hustle is that movie. Its a movie where the dialouge is the most entertaining part about the plot. But thats not saying, the movie doesn't have one. American Hustle is a heist movie without the heist. And that is perfectly fine. Its what makes this movie so different and entertaining.
- DirectorJean-Marc ValléeStarsMatthew McConaugheyJennifer GarnerJared LetoIn 1985 Dallas, electrician and hustler Ron Woodroof works around the system to help AIDS patients get the medication they need after he is diagnosed with the disease.Oh Matthew McConaughey, will you ever stop being so great? I sure hope not, because whatever you're doing right now to be such a great actor, is really working out for you and the viewers. Dallas Buyers club might be his acting gig yet. It's a movie about A man diagnoses with AIDS, who decides to help other AIDS patients get the medication they deserve. Dallas Buyers club makes you think about life, and also makes you appreciate it. That coupled with great acting performances by Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto, makes for a really stand out movie.
- DirectorAlexander PayneStarsBruce DernWill ForteJune SquibbAn aging, booze-addled father makes the trip from Montana to Nebraska with his estranged son in order to claim a million-dollar Mega Sweepstakes Marketing prize. But the oscars always has that unique and interesting movie in the cooking pot that is "The Best Picture Nominations". Here is Nebraska. A movie shot without colors, and with an interesting yet weird concept. One man on a journey from Montana to Nebraska with his son to get a huge amount of money. In between we get these interesting interview shots, and dialogue between him and his son. We also get some really great scenes with him and his wife. I thought this movie was fantastic and i am glad so many others are discovering it after it received nominations on this years Oscars.
- DirectorAlfonso CuarónStarsSandra BullockGeorge ClooneyEd HarrisDr Ryan Stone, an engineer on her first time on a space mission, and Matt Kowalski, an astronaut on his final expedition, have to survive in space after they are hit by debris while spacewalking. But how could i possibly forget the movie that garnered the most water cooler discussions this year. Gravity was a huge box office success and is therefore this years big audience movie, in the best picture nominations. Does it deserve it? Of course it does.
Gravity is a good movie!. When i first watched it i was blown away. When i watched it a second time i really enjoyed myself but wasn't blown away. See the point I'm trying to get across? Gravity is a visual feast, and is definitely the prettiest movie i saw last year. But... in terms of plot and acting its nothing to write home about. But that's okay, it was never meant to be that kind of movie any ways. If you want to watch a beautiful and entertaining popcorn movie? Watch gravity. If you want to watch a thought provoking and deep cinematic story? Don't watch gravity. But don't criticize it for not being Citizen Kane. - DirectorStephen FrearsStarsJudi DenchSteve CooganSophie Kennedy ClarkA world-weary political journalist picks up the story of a woman's search for her son, who was taken away from her decades ago after she became pregnant and was forced to live in a convent. And talking about thought provovking Dramas. Philomena is definetely one. Steve Coogan plays the best role he has ever played with Judi Dench who plays a woman who haven't yet given up hope of ever finding the son she lost several decades before. Although its a sad movie about dealing with loss, what it really serves as, at least for me is a really deep character study that brings to mind the idea of never giving up. And at least never giving up on love.
- DirectorPaul GreengrassStarsTom HanksBarkhad AbdiBarkhad AbdirahmanThe true story of Captain Richard Phillips and the 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates of the U.S.-flagged MV Maersk Alabama, the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in two hundred years.I'm going to be honest here, and i will probably receive hate for this. I didn't really like Captain Phillips. To be honest? I don't know why. It has everything a movie should have to entertain me. I have always enjoyed hostage thrillers, and when its even based on a real life situation, it should make for the perfect movie for me. Still, i never found myself really enjoying this movie. Sure it's shot well, its well directed and the movie has a beginning and an end. I just never really cared.
Ill give Captain Phillips this though. The last scene where Tom Hanks or "Captain Phillips" deals with what he has just experiences, and is still in shock. Is a beautiful scene, that made me teary eyed. I cant lie. It truly did, but the rest of the movie was just alright. Nothing spectacular, but nothing bad either. I know it's not my business to suggest other nominees, but i have to be honest. I would much rather see "Rush" on this years Best Picture nominations than Captain Phillips.
