- DirectorMel GibsonStarsAndrew GarfieldSam WorthingtonLuke BraceyWorld War II American Army Medic Desmond T. Doss, serving during the Battle of Okinawa, refuses to kill people and becomes the first man in American history to receive the Medal of Honor without firing a shot.A late member to the list, Hacksaw is an absolutely wonderful movie top to bottom. One of the best picture nominees that I can agree with.
- DirectorMichael BayStarsJohn KrasinskiPablo SchreiberJames Badge DaleDuring an attack on a U.S. compound in Libya, a security team struggles to make sense out of the chaos.13 Hours is a fantastically shot and acted movie, showcasing the best of "Bayhem". This ranks pretty close to the top of my favorite Michael Bay movies. A hard subject given the outcome of the actual events it is based on, none the less, it is equal parts respectful, high energy and emotional.
- DirectorKevin ReynoldsStarsJoseph FiennesTom FeltonPeter FirthIn 33 AD, a Roman Tribune in Judea is tasked to find the missing body of Jesus Christ, who rose from the dead. One of the best faith-based films to have come out since Passion of the Christ. None of the cliched saccharine sweet, preaching to the converted fare that faith-based films most times are. Highly recommend to anyone of faith or who enjoys a wonderfully presented story/film.
- DirectorDavid AyerStarsWill SmithJared LetoMargot RobbieA secret government agency recruits some of the most dangerous incarcerated super-villains to form a defensive task force. Their first mission: save the world from the apocalypse. It was a close race between this, Deadpool and BvS, but for me, Suicide Squad has to be my favorite comic film of the year. It has its haters, but for me, this is wacky wild crazy done right.
- DirectorTim MillerStarsRyan ReynoldsMorena BaccarinT.J. MillerA wisecracking mercenary gets experimented on and becomes immortal yet hideously scarred, and sets out to track down the man who ruined his looks. An absolute joygasm of a film to watch. Reynolds is and will forever be Wade Wilson, aka Deadpool. This film only ranks behind Suicide Squad for me because of the tour-de-force performance from Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and a very surprising subtle, yet commanding performance from Will Smith.
- DirectorFede AlvarezStarsStephen LangJane LevyDylan MinnetteHoping to walk away with a massive fortune, a trio of thieves break into the house of a blind man who isn't as helpless as he seems. This film has a very interesting right/wrong line that is not entirely drawn clearly. Once the film ends and the credits roll, has justice been served? Have the "good guys" won the day over bad? It really isn't that easy of a question to answer and that is the beauty of the film. Wonderful performances from the core cast and expert tension building make this one of Ghost House Pictures best films to date. A "right or wrong" 8 out of 10 stars.
- DirectorZack SnyderStarsBen AffleckHenry CavillAmy AdamsBatman is manipulated by Lex Luthor to fear Superman. Superman´s existence is meanwhile dividing the world and he is framed for murder during an international crisis. The heroes clash and force the neutral Wonder Woman to reemerge.Tons and tons of hate from the critic community leveled at this film and for the life of me, I don't know why. IMO, this film wins a head to head with Captain America: Civil War. There is so much for fans to enjoy here with the icing on the cake being a fantastic intro for Wonder Woman.
- DirectorBryan SingerStarsJames McAvoyMichael FassbenderJennifer LawrenceIn the 1980s, the X-Men must defeat an ancient all-powerful mutant, En Sabah Nur, who intends to thrive by bringing destruction to the world. For some reason, IMO, this is my favorite of the new X-Men films. I know it received less love by fans, but for me, it ranks behind only X2. I would love to see them continue with these actors but we shall see.
- DirectorAntoine FuquaStarsDenzel WashingtonChris PrattEthan HawkeSeven gunmen from a variety of backgrounds are brought together by a vengeful young widow to protect her town from the private army of a destructive industrialist. Some may take me to task or vehemently disagree, but there are many elements improved on with this version compared to the Brenner led classic. There is no replacing the classic, but this film carves out a place of its own. My favorite "remake" of the year.
- DirectorJon FavreauStarsNeel SethiBill MurrayBen KingsleyAfter a threat from the tiger Shere Khan forces him to flee the jungle, a man-cub named Mowgli embarks on a journey of self discovery with the help of panther Bagheera and free-spirited bear Baloo.Darker than the animated classic, but all for the best. A fantastic first-time young lead actor and well done CGI environments and animals, this was yet another successful live-rendition of a classic Disney animated tale.
- DirectorPaul FeigStarsMelissa McCarthyKristen WiigKate McKinnonFollowing a ghost invasion of Manhattan, paranormal enthusiasts Erin Gilbert and Abby Yates, nuclear engineer Jillian Holtzmann, and subway worker Patty Tolan band together to stop the otherworldly threat.Lots of negativity thrown at this film from the get-go, I just don't get the mentality of some moviegoers today. I had a blast with this film. It will by no means become the classic the original is, but none the less, there is obvious talent on the screen and it is a fun watch.
- DirectorJustin LinStarsChris PineZachary QuintoKarl UrbanThe crew of the USS Enterprise explores the furthest reaches of uncharted space, where they encounter a new ruthless enemy, who puts them, and everything the Federation stands for, to the test.My favorite sequel of the year. All the elements of classic Trek are on display. A surprising yet welcomed emotional goodbye/tribute to Leonard Nimoy is woven into the story. It also serves as a bittersweet goodbye to Anton Yelchen.
- DirectorPaul GreengrassStarsMatt DamonTommy Lee JonesAlicia VikanderThe CIA's most dangerous former operative is drawn out of hiding to uncover more explosive truths about his past. There is something comfortable and assured when Damon and Greengrass make a Bourne film. Nothing new here, just the continuation of well done spy-thriller action and adventure.
- DirectorTravis KnightStarsCharlize TheronArt ParkinsonMatthew McConaugheyA young boy named Kubo must locate a magical suit of armour worn by his late father in order to defeat a vengeful spirit from the past.Zootopia has garnered the lion share of accolades as best animated film of the year, but for me, hands down, this is the best animated film of the year. Spiritual, emotional and entertaining, there is something, for me, more alive about stop-motion animation than the CGI films.
- DirectorGareth EdwardsStarsFelicity JonesDiego LunaAlan TudykIn a time of conflict, a group of unlikely heroes band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire's ultimate weapon of destruction. In the category of "prequels" this is tops and if I was put to the coals to give a #1 film of the year, this would be it. It establishes its own identity while still being a comfortable companion piece to the overall Star Wars episode saga.
- DirectorDavid YatesStarsEddie RedmayneKatherine WaterstonAlison SudolIn 1926, magizoologist Newt Scamander arrives in New York during his worldwide tour to research and rescue magical creatures as something mysterious leaves trails of destruction in the city, threatening to expose the wizarding world. With the ever mature and dark story that the Potter films took, something lost was the fun of being a wizard. That is once again front and center here with glorious results. Can't wait for more.
