Abacus Federal Saving Bank 国宝银行
Thomas Sung 孙启诚 founder
Too big to fail, small enough to go to jail. 事情的起因是银行职员以保证银行的贷款拿回扣 cash tip。顾客损失了钱而没拿到贷款,告银行。
I do believe there are serious tax invading problems, typically in small cash business, such as restaurants. Without well documents tax returns, loan legal process is very difficult if not impossible, which lead to serious falsifying documentation, such as a case someone can be loaned 800,000 with very low income.
This bank is caught in 2008 real estate Finance crisis. Although the bank did a lot of fraud documentations, which is very often among emigrants, actually the bank serve quite well to its Chinese community. The case is built on fraud on loss of Fannie Mae. The ironically among Abacus bank 3000 mortgage to sold Fannie Mae , only 9 in default. So much bureaucracy.
So as said in the documentary, there is 2 kinds of
frauds, Fraud for profit and Fraud for home. 2008 real estate Finance Crisis is fraud for profit, damage to healthy of economy, but fraud for home is the fraud with extremely low risk. Our society should not waste huge resource try to police this kind of fraud for home behavour, like do we should
concentrate resource on serious crime or focus on restrained crossing red right. since our human need always not blank and white. Law should serve people need, not other way around. In this sense, I agree with final verdict: not guilt.
The bank spent 10 millions for lawsuit. What a waste. - StarsPhil RosenthalMonica HoranLily RosenthalIn I'LL HAVE WHAT PHIL'S HAVING, Rosenthal sets his sights on kitchens both on and off the well-worn gastronomic path, where he meets those who are keeping traditions alive and creating new ones. Viewers travel with him from Hong Kong to Barcelona, from Paris to Tokyo, and from a three-star Michelin restaurant in an Italian palazzo to a Los Angeles bakery training former gang members. Rosenthal is a food enthusiast, but as he was growing up, he was not exposed to any adventurous eating. Rosenthal says, "My mother was not a fantastic cook. Our oven had a setting for 'shoe.' But I've always loved family, food, travel, and humor. That's how I connect with people. I'm not your typical adventurer. So, I'm hoping folks will look at a nebbish like me exploring the world and trying new things and say, 'If that guy can go outside, maybe I can, too.'"Saw on 2/13/2018
