Top 10 Favouite Music Movies
A list of go to music related movies or concerts that I never get tired if watching. There were a few that IMDB didn't have listings for like Rose Tattoo at Bogo jail, Gimme Ted. A couple of others worth checking out are the Classic Album series for Pink Floyd, Motorhead, Iron Maiden. I'll include these with the next list. This list is in no particular order

- DirectorPeter CliftonJoe MassotStarsRobert PlantJimmy PageJohn Paul JonesThe line forms here for the world's greatest and possibly most influential band--Led Zeppelin. This mesmerizing movie built around Zep's famed 1973 concerts at New York's Madison Square Garden is convincing proof why.Hard toss up between The Who and Zep, but this is probably the go to movie. Watched part of it on late night TV and had to have it. So $40 down and an import and it was in my hands on VHS. Fast forward to 2000's and it's available as a special edition for less than $15. Skip the boring first fantasy sections until you get to the actual music. The concert is cut together with different footage from several concerts and not always seamlessly (check out Jimmy using several of his guitars both No1+2 but also 3 (The cherry one)). Jimmy's playing is just amazing, low slung Les Paul, theremin effects, over indulgence (what the 70's were all about).
- DirectorJeff SteinStarsRoger DaltreyPete TownshendKeith MoonInterviews, TV clips and concert footage make up this comprehensive profile of The Who, Britain's premiere rock band.Only caught the last half of this one night on late night TV. Pete's guitar scraping and out of control - I had to find it. Imported in early 90's (as you had to do that before the internet) and the speed was all wrong (but funny). Fast forward to 2000 ish and it's been updated and restored to correct speed with loads of extras. Funny, serious, copious amounts of guitar playing. Pete's playing on the second part with Road Runner and Sparks, just amazing and what The Who were all about. Power and Volume!
- DirectorRob ReinerStarsRob ReinerMichael McKeanChristopher GuestSpinal Tap, one of England's loudest bands, is chronicled by film director Marty DiBergi on what proves to be a fateful tour.Watched this late one night on TV, didn't know what to make of it. I think I pressed record after a while and re-watched it to find out how funny this movie is. It's a comical genius - the song writing ain't that bad either. For years I'm sure it was an under ground joke among muso's because it was so real to life for them. Later off finding that Michael McKean popped up all over the place, Harry Shearer was the voice behind Simpsons characters and what can be said about Christopher Guest's Nigel Tufnel other than "My solo's are my trademark" and "But these amps go to 11" - forever immortalized.
- DirectorBrian GibsonStarsStephen ReaBilly ConnollyJimmy NailFame, fortune and fornication drove the British rock band in the '70s until a divine end. 20 years later, Strange Fruit reunites and goes on a tour with ups and downs on the continent.Much in the same vane as Spinal Tap, follows the rockers thaT never quite made it for a second shot and still not sorting out their differences from the first time. Features Bill Nighy (which you've seen in countless movies since) as the self obsessed front man, Jimmy Nail (who had some musical hits with Crocodile Smile??) as the keeper of the flame of the band and Billy Connolly as their roady (who was going to be the drummer by the way) absolutely tops it off.
- DirectorJean-Claude LordStarsMichael ParéMarina OrsiniBernie CoulsonA Montreal construction worker joins a band and turns out to be a long-lost rock star from 1960s New Jersey - none other than Eddie Wilson, who mysteriously disappeared after a road accident. While probably not the best of acting, sometimes movies and the music speak out more than just the acting. Maybe it was a bit corny, but the songs are pretty good (although very early 80's) following the resurgence of Eddie from the ashes of his past life. Definitely better than the first
- DirectorRenny HarlinStarsAndrew Dice ClayLauren HollyWayne NewtonA vulgar private detective is hired to find a missing groupie and is drawn into a mystery involving a series of murders tied to the music industry. While not strictly a music film, it definitely had music roots. You have to love Andrew Dice Clary's male shovonistic one liners. Very 80's and features some up and coming artists of the time.
- DirectorTom HanksStarsTom HanksLiv TylerCharlize TheronA local Pennsylvania band scores a one-hit wonder in 1964 and rides the star-making machinery as long as they can, with lots of help from their manager. While not a big fan of Tom Hanks movies (eh a bit some old for me), the tunes in this movie are cool and have the feet taping. Shows the rise and eventual fall of a group of teens starting out in the music business with their great ideas and how the actual music business works.
- DirectorLiam LynchStarsJack BlackKyle GassJR ReedTo become the greatest band of all time, two slacker, wannabe-rockers set out on a quest to steal a legendary guitar pick that gives its holders incredible guitar skills, from a maximum security Rock and Roll museum.Full blown movie of how Tenacious D came about (albeit some gratuities) and follows the story of their quest for the ultimate Pick Of Destiny. They battle the devil (Dave Grohl), each other and cameo appearance of Ben Stiller as the wise guitar store salesman (that hair - Ritchie Blackmore all over)
- StarsTed NugentNot for everyone but this is an instructional guitar video by Ted Nugent for Hal Leonard (part of Star Lick - Brian May, Tony Iommi did them too). This is the funniest guitar tutorial I've ever seen starting of with Ted killing an electronic piano with a shotgun in the woods because they breed. How does he do it? I don't know, he doesn't know. Attitude!!!!
- DirectorMichael AptedStarsDavid EssexAdam FaithLarry HagmanThe rise and fall of the rock singer Jim Maclaine, in the mid 60s, with his manager, Mike, and his group, "The Stray Cats."The sequel to That'll Be The day starring David Essex tells the continuing story of Jim McClean who'd left his family to become a Beatlesque pop musician. Including cameo's of familiar rock icon faces suck as Keith Moon follows his ascension from club musician to overblown rock star and then recluse who can't hack the fame - even turning on long time manager and friend trying to look out for him. A said story, but also some good music and even covers of songs The Beatles covered themselves like "Some Other Guy Now.
